Pinned topic WAS 7.0 compatibilty with Portal server 8.0
We are currently using WAS 7.0 and WebSphere portal server 6.1 as development environment. Recently we got a requirement to upgrade portal server to 8.0. Can we upgrade the portal server with WAS 7.0 or we need to upgrade WAS 7.0 First then only we can upgrade WebSphere portal Server. Please let me know how to proceed in this case.?

I would also suggest you get in touch with your IBM rep since upgrades/migrations are key activities that should be done after expert advice.

WP 8 has a minimum requirement of WAS ND 126.96.36.199, check this out: http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/prodguid/v1r0/clarity-reports/report/html/softwareReqsForProduct?deliverableId=1335812433418&osPlatform=Windows#
What you are planning to do is technically termed as a migration. Check this table for supported migration paths: http://www-10.lotus.com/ldd/portalwiki.nsf/xpDocViewer.xsp?lookupName=IBM+WebSphere+Portal+8+Product+Documentation#action=openDocument&res_title=Supported_migration_paths_wp8&content=pdcontent
Migration -> Moving from one version of Portal like 6.1 or 7 to WP 8
Upgrade -> Moving from one release of the same version of Portal to another like, for example from WP 7.0 to 188.8.131.52
