Pinned topic X3650 M3 - 7945 Start up issue after the RAM upgrade

‏2013-01-29T06:50:30Z |
Dear all,
We have an X3650 M3 7945, that we recently wanted to upgrade to 288 GB RAM.

Server configuration before the upgrade:

2x Intel Xeon CPU E5620 @ 2.40 GHz
Per processor 8 x 8 GB RAM and 3 x 4 GB RAM (Total = 120 GB)
Do not know the exact firmware version but for sure older version
Upgrade was tried as following:

1. No changes to the firmware
Per Processor 9 x 16 GB RAM KTM-SX313QLV/16G --> Equiv. IBM P/N: 49Y1400 (Which is declared as OK for this server type by IBM)
Server is hanging at start up and shows EFI Initialization on the screen for several minutes. Thereafter i could notice the orange exclamation mark lightening on the front of the server.
Nothing more is happening.

2. Firmware update using the ibm_utl_bomc_2.31_windows_i386.exe that charged the last updates for the server and made a bootable image of it.
The firmware was upgraded to the uEFI platform
The server is still hanging at start up with the same screen EFI Initialization and the orange exclamation mark lightening on the front of the server.

I have tried 2 set of RAM and have always the same problem.

Many thanks for your help.

Regards.

Aya

    Hi Aya,

Ok , yep 288GB was the max for the X3650 7945 and a 49Y1400 is a confirmed valid part number also.

    The 49Y1400 is a 1.35V stick, there's also a 1.5v stick 46C7483 but that's nolonger available

You don't say whether there's the normal triple beep memory error?

Pop your old RAM in .. does it boot?
Pop you new RAM in (in pairs), don't go for the whole lot just a couple of pairs, does it still hang?

It's big beast to get through but there's also the PD guide to help. http://www-947.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-5083596&brandind=5000008

    Regards,

    Richard

check the redbook for this server - http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/tips0805.html#memory

are you using quad rank DIMMS? Because only 12 is supported with the 16 GB quad rank dimms (49Y1400) you supplied.
