I tried to insert the SAS drive twice between 15/01/2013 15.25- 15.45

The controllers went offline a few seconds after I inserted the disk, both times.

Does it an IBM branded disk (FRU P/N 49Y1880) or "native" Seagate disk?
If it's not IBM, despite IBM OEMs Seagate ST1000NM0001 as FRU 49Y1880, you couldn't use it.
In case it's IBM HDD, try to follow "Using the drive migration disable script to add new drives" procedure and then "Adding new hard disk drives" initialize procedure from the next guide:
"Installation and Migration Guide for Hard Drive and Storage Expansion Enclosure - IBM System Storage DS3000, DS4000, and DS5000"

It's a Seagate HDD, not an IBM.
I may suppose it was used into another server or storage and when DS3300 tries to read a special area in the tail of drive (DACstor) it found something "inappropriate" data and it crashes.
But, for all that, even storage wouldn't reboot, it wouldn't accept this drive. Hard Drives for IBM Storage (event are from Seagate, or HDS, etc), has a special firmware and in best case storage marks it as incompatible/unknown.
Look for IBM branded HDD compatible with your storage

BTW, it's looks like this drive (1TB 6GB NL SAS) isn't compatible at all. Even some 6Gb SAS drives are listed as compatible, but only "pure" SAS, not NL SAS.

    Thanks for the answer Pavel.

The good news is we only purchased one of this HDD for trial.

It's strange that the low-end SATA works without any issues, such as the seagate 1TB I picked up randomly from the LAB.

The only problem with the low-end sata is the SAN will report lost of dual-path which is quite annoying...
