Pinned topic launchpad problems - Linux on system Z

‏2013-01-11T18:02:04Z |
Trying to install TPM 721. I can not get the launchpad to run. I have bash installed. I have firefox installed and I've used it to download the tar files, so it certainly works. I've set the browser variable, export BROWSER=/usr/sbin/firefox, but every time I start ./launchpad.sh I get a popup telling me that it can find a supported browser. I am using PuTTY with X forwarding turned on to display firefox.

I figured out how to install the Middleware without using the launchpad, install/MWI/setupzLinux.sh, and I can start the TPM Core installer with, install/bin/setuplinux390.bin. But I can not figure out how to install the Base Services without using the launchpad, which will not start.

Any suggestions on getting the launchpad running or how to start the Base Services installer without the launchpad?

Bah - can't find a way to edit my previous post.

I made a typo on the browser path. Should have been /usr/bin/firefox

Did you add from the bash in the PATH variable the firefox path?

      slestpm:~ # echo $PATH
      /sbin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/sbin:/root/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/games:/usr/lib64/jvm/jre/bin:/usr/lib/mit/bin:/usr/lib/mit/sbin

      bash is in /bin
      firefox is in /usr/bin

both are in the default path. Or were you suggesting that I add the bash path to the BROWSER path also?

Another message that appears in the terminal where I try to start ./launchpad/sh is

        slestpm:/instpkgs # export BROWSER=/usr/bin/firefox
        slestpm:/instpkgs # ./launchpad.sh
cp: cannot stat `/instpkgs/launchpad/lib': No such file or directory
cp: cannot stat `/instpkgs/launchpad/../jre': No such file or directory

These are the installation files I downloaded.
        slestpm:/instpkgs # ls /mnt/IBM/TPM*
        /mnt/IBM/TPM_V721_CoreComp_1of2_zLinux64.tar /mnt/IBM/TPM_V721_Install_Unix.tar
        /mnt/IBM/TPM_V721_CoreComp_2of2_zLinux64.tar /mnt/IBM/TPM_V721_Midlwr_zLinux64.tar
        /mnt/IBM/TPM_V721_Install_Suppl_Unix.tar

Did you try with vncserver instead of putty ? You can find details in the TPM installation doc on "Using an X session"

Thank you, that was a good thought. Sadly using VNC with both the TightVNC viewer and using a browser for the client results in the same errors.

      slestpm:/instpkgs # export BROWSER=/usr/bin/firefox
      slestpm:/instpkgs # ./launchpad.sh
cp: cannot stat `/instpkgs/launchpad/lib': No such file or directory
cp: cannot stat `/instpkgs/launchpad/../jre': No such file or directory
      Unable to find supported browser

An error occurred while starting the launchpad. This error typically occurs when the launchpad
is unable to find a supported browser. Check your product's documentation for a list of supported
      browsers.

I suspect the problem is the firefox version. Please use firefox 3.x. I am currently using 3.5.7.

There isn't a firefox 3 provided with SLES 11. I went to the firefox site and downloaded firefox 3 for linux. follwed the directions to unzip and untar. But it will not run.
                marpace@slestpm2:~> firefox/firefox
-bash: firefox/firefox: cannot execute binary file

I assume from research that it is a problem with executing a 32-bit program on a 64-bit system, but I can not figure out what 32-bit library I need to install to make this work.
So nothing personal, but this is just another example of IBM putting out instructions that work great in Linux x86 and Windows world, but don't work in the System Z world. It's as if this was never tested.

                  ok Mark.
There is a known problem with launchpad and firefox version.
Look at this technote and let me know.
