Pinned topic Windows 2012 drivers etc. for IBM System x servers availability

‏2013-01-07T09:24:22Z |
A customer of ours is using MS SCCM to install Operating Systems. Drivers are installed using SCCM driver packages.
We usually download drivers for the various required server models from the IBM download site but although Windows 2012 has been released for sometime I still can't find any drivers on the IBM site. The same goes for stuff like MegaRAID Storage Manager and teaming SW if still relevant (since Windows 2012 has built-in teaming support).

On IBM serverproven matrix a number of IBM server models have been certified for Windows 2012, but where can you download the drivers or does IBM recommend to just use the drivers delivered with the OS ?

If not currently available when will drivers for Windows 2012 be availablefor download from the IBM download site?

The problem also exists for stuff like MegaRaid Storage Manager and teaming software (if still relevant with Windows 2012 since the OS has built-in support for LAN adapter teaming)
Kind Regards

I put in the 7914 system type for an x3550 M4, and found Windows 2012 specific downloads, via the FixCentral page. (http://www.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/us/en/Downloads?lnk=msdDO-fuad-usen)

You could also use the UpdateXpress Installer (version according to your system and OS requirement) and create a local software repository of latest updates.

    http://www-947.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/docdisplay?lndocid=serv-xpress

Other than that I think it's evident there is still some catch-up or statements needed as to whether current versions of software, like those found in 2008 R2, will work in 2012 and be supported. Some of the search results seem to contradict each other (searching for 2012 sometimes returns 2008, etc.).

As far as official support or availability statements... I would call IBM support for your specific system type/OS combination.

Since you mentioned installing the OS.. ServerGuide is also a point of reference for server builds.

By the way, I've used the current version of MegaRAID Storage Manager in 2012 without issue.

    Hi Dave

    Thanks for your reply.

When we are installing servers we have made the decision to only use components that are officially supported by IBM. Although the drivers may often be almost the same between various server types we create individual SCCM driver packages for each server type like for instance x3850 X5 (7143). Some time ago I have used UXSPI to download both bundled as well as latest updates from IBM but have so far not seen any Windows 2012 for the server models that are in scope for our customer : x3850 X5, x3650 M3 and maybe x3400 M3/x3200 M3.

As you state the MegaRaid Storage Manager may very well work, but when you check release infomation for the latest version (12.05.03) then it states that there is now support for Win2008R2 SP1 which in my view means that IBM does not support its use with Win2012 although it might work.

So my problem is basically that we have decided to only use stuff that are officially supported by IBM with the server models and OS versions for which it is officially released by IBM.

And that is where I miss being able to find some official statements from IBM about their support for Windows 2012 on their server HW and availability of drivers, utils from the fixcentral.
When will it be available and why is it not already there when various servermodels have been certified for use with Windows 2012 (based on what drivers ? IBM supplied or MS supplied.

Although we do not use Server Guide for installing servers I have downloadedit hoping that drivers for the server models that we are going to use could be extracted from Server Guide and then be used for the MS SCCM driver packages.

    Kind Regards

I haven't spent much time on it but I did not manage to find out how to extract drivers from Server Guide.

I have not looked into the details yet but it seems as if that Update Xpress system packs containing Windows 2012 support have started to pop-up on the IBM Fix Central. I am currently downloading ibm_utl_uxsp_gmsp13p-3.50_windows_32-64.zip for the IBM x3850 X5 (7143) which is I guess the same for the x3850 X5 (7145) so things may have started to happen.

Unfortunately it does not seem as if the Update Xpress System Packs I have downloaded related to models : x3850 X5, x3400 M3 and x3200 M3 contain as much Windows 2012 stuff as I had hoped. Almost nothing. So back in waiting mode.

The system packs were released ultimately december 2012.

The current MegaRAID Storage Manager (12.05.03) indicates it supports Windows 2012 in the change history.

Just FYI, I noticed a number of new system packs showing up as of 1/15 covering Windows 2012. Depending on your server model, maybe yours is included. I only checked the 3850 X5 (7143) and saw the new pack release covering 2012.
