Pinned topic Bladecenter S alert 4301 (unsupported drive)

‏2012-12-12T14:20:02Z |
Hi,
We have 5 Blade Server 2 of them are HS23 and 3 of them are HS22 in blade center S type 8886. All Servers are boot from Local 300GB HDD's.

Storage Modules are attached with both HS23 only.

Two Storage Module are fully populated with 600 GB SAS 15k disks. These disks are currently on firmware level ibm_fw_bcsw_s0cl-1.2.4.011.

The SAS raid controllers are reporting error on all drives.
"drive 01:01 firmware level is unsupported"

Disk Storage Module for IBM BladeCenter-S Firmware Update 1.08
RAID SAS Switch VSC7157 Rev 07

Orange Information LED glows on front and back of chasses and on back of both SAS Raid Switches too.
All Blade Servers and Chasses modules are up to date.
See the attaches AMM and SAS Raid Snap short.

Any idea to resolve this issue?

    Dear Muhammad,

looks like HDDs firmware still old. Lets check, could you provide output of the next commands from SAS RAID Module:

    list controller
    alert -get
    list enclosure
    swversion
    detail controller -ctlr 0
    list drive
    list pool
    list volume
    detail drive -slot 1:1
    detail drive -slot 1:2
    detail drive -slot 1:3
    detail drive -slot 1:4
    detail drive -slot 1:5
    detail drive -slot 1:6
    detail drive -slot 2:1
    detail drive -slot 2:2
    detail drive -slot 2:3
    detail drive -slot 2:4
    detail drive -slot 2:5

        Hi Alexander,

I got the same alerts 4301 on my new 6 hard disks shipped from IBM. Please check the log for those commands I runned in my IBM Chassis S.

Please help me if you can. Thanks to mra945 for opening this issue in forum.

Use SCM or the RSSM firmware update on Fix Central to apply the latest firmware levels to your modules, DSMs, and drives. This will resolve.

Hello, use the Non-Concurrent Code Load (NCCL) of firmware update method - it is only one which will update HDD firmware also. For that you have to stop all production and set bot RSSMs to service mode.

There has been a recent RSSM firmware update 1.2.40.14. Dated 7/3/13:
              https://www-947.ibm.com/support/entry/myportal/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-5087717

Using the Non-Concurrent Code Load update process allows firmware updates to hard drives.

Under a SAS RAID deployment, this is the only way to update the harddrives if they are in the DSM units.

You didnt mention how you will apply the firmware. The choices are under windows, linux, or using SCM running on Windows or Linux.

We did this today on multiple RAID controller cards. It worked but in some cases we received firmware update errors. However, check the version in the CLI for the RAID controller. The firmware may still have applied.

Also in the CLI for the RAID Controller do a LIST DRIVE before and after the firmware to see if the drives get updated.

Hi. I have a similar situation. I have 6 disks in raid and 2 new (with the old firmware, they have not been determined). Use firmware up the connection of two new disks. This error 4301 appeared after installing the firmware ibm_fw_bcsw_s0cl-1.2.4.014_anyos_noarch_scm through SCM in Windows. Controller firmware upgrade, but disks firmware version remains the same (existing raid will be destroyed after the firmware?). I used the Non-Concurrent Code Load update.

      Dear Mike,

it just means that Concurrent Code Load were used. Use Non-Concurrent Code Load for HDDs firmware update (see readme file for details).

I have witnessed the 4031 in two different situations. The first is that RSSM is up rev on the firmware and the drives are down rev. The other is when the drives are current and the RSSM is back rev on the firmware. In either instance, updating the firmware using non-concurrent load with either Windows or Linux (CentOS has been confirmed to work while Ubuntu and Debian based distros do not) will fix both problems.

Make sure you clear all other alerts other than the 4031 and you put the controllers into service mode before you start the flash. The readme file tells you how to do this.

I am using the latest 1.2.4.016_windows_noarch with the -n switch (NCCL mode) with the RSSMs in service mode but still get the error. Is there anything else I can try?

Did you clear the alert first?   If you don't, the error will remain.

I didn't mask the alerts first. However, the firmware on the drives did not upgrade either? Would leaving the alerts cause the firmware upgrade to fail?

Yes.  If there are alerts on them, they will not be upgraded.

Hey, got the same issue, alerts masked, but firmware update gets me error. I've tried NCCL. After error the disk alert logs are once again unmasked.

            Any clue?

OK. There is now a newer version:

IBM BladeCenter S SAS RAID Module firmware update package version 1.3.0.008 for Microsoft Windows - IBM BladeCenter S (1948, 8886, 7779)

    Its available from here:

    https://www-947.ibm.com/support/entry/myportal/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-5085809

PLS read the txt file. Lots of pre-reqs that must be done. Also note you will have to do several RSSM firmware updates if you are very back level. You cant jump to the latest one. Its usually a 2 or 3 step update process.

    Some points:

    1. To upgrade to 1.3.008 the current RAID controller SW Version must be 1.2.1.015 or above.

    2. No drive firmware is updated if you use Concurrent Code Load mode. So to upgrade drive firmwares you must be in NCCL thats Non Concurrent Coad Load.

    3. For an NCCL firmware update, all IO processes must be shut down before performing the firmware update. This also means you cant run the update from a blade that uses the storage to be updated. Have seen this happen.

    4. Before starting any firmware updates ALL persistent alerts must be resolved. View the Active Alert List to verify if there are any.

Have attached the text file for the firmware.

And a shameless plug. Have a look at the firmware updating section in the newly released Implementing the IBM BladeCenter S Chassis Redbook.

    HI all,

I have a question for you: I've just added one more HDD to our IBM Blade Center S that is totally upgraded with latest Firmwares (Controller, Switches, AMM and so on). Obviously, the new disk has a older firmware revision and I need to upgrade it to mount HDD with others inside production Storage Pools. Is there an option inside CLI console (phyton Mode) to perform a single disk firmware upgrade? Or have I to perform the whole Controller RAID upgrade again?

    Thanks in advance,

    Marco

You have to perform the whole upgrade. I haven't seen an option to do 1 drive.

Remember the following conditions need to be met:

      1. Use NCCL state.

      2. No drive access for any blade whilst upgrade being applied.

      3. HDD firmware alerts need to be suppressed/cleared for firmware to be applied. (They block the updates).

      4. Read the txt file with the firmware being applied to ensure you have the environment conditions met.

So, just to reiterate, if only one RAID drive fails and i order a replacement i'd have to:

        - shutdown all blades
        - reboot both controllers to maintainence mode
        - apply the firmware update again
        - restart all blades

to have no "drive unsupported" warnings and get the affected raid array healthy again?

This sounds borderline insane, how can such a long downtime be justified?

Is there any other way to update a drive outside a BladeCenter? Maybe from a Workstation?

              I don't see why not.

One way to is to make the drive to be updated a secondary drive. The primary has the OS on it. This way you could mount each drive and update the firmware.

Not sure how the OS would interpret a HDD that is part of a RAID array from another server though. (not tried this myself)

Hmm this sounds interesting, which software would I use to update just the disk when it's attached to another workstation?
