Pinned topic Direct update not working from WDE to iPhone w existing .ipa

‏2012-11-18T03:37:26Z |
Hello,

I read a previous thread on this subject that stated that WDE did in fact support Direct Updates. Here's my situation...

  • I have an .ipa installed (via Ad-hoc) on my iPhone 4s
  • I updated the app's html file to test the Direct Update feature, and as expected, successfully completed "Build All and Deploy"

2012-11-17 21:58:08,756 INFO WidgetServiceBean (907016607@qtp-1422529165-15:kous3zvhy99ch1n02l8zny94) Deployed app 'Opps-common' successfully on Worklight Server

  • I did not change the WL app version #
  • I closed and then restarted the app, expecting to get the notification... I did not
  • I closed all open apps then power-cycled the iPhone
  • I validated that no apps restarted after the power-cycle
  • I started the app, expecting this time to get the notification... I did not

The app continues to work perfectly, however it's the original copy from the Ad-hoc .ipa install.

What am I missing?

thanks!!!

I see a "0.91" version number given to your deployed application.
    This usually begins with 1.0.

Have you made previous deployments with different versions and installed those on your device?
Have you then changed the version and deployed it, but didn't install the newer version on the device?

Once you change the version number in application-descriptor.xml, if you do not install it also on the device, it will not get any direct updates done.

Can you describe your work flow from when the app had version 1.0 (default version number) in its application-descriptor.xml?

      Hello Idan,
      I'm embedding my responses...

I see a "0.91" version number given to your deployed application. This usually begins with 1.0.
      • The app's version # 0.91 because it contains about 91% of all of the functionality needed for the initial 1.0 release.

Have you made previous deployments with different versions and installed those on your device?
      • 0.91 was the first .ipa deployment on any device. Prior to this first deployment, all testing was done in the MBS and iOS Simulator. (I'm very patient, and resisted the urge to immediately test on the actual device) :)

Have you then changed the version and deployed it, but didn't install the newer version on the device?
      • Yes... after I established that the .ipa was functioning properly on the device...
      • I made a change to the .html file AND bumped the version in the WL app desc xml file to 0.92, and then issued the "Build All and Deploy".
      • When the 0.92 version appeared in the WL Admin Console along w the original 0.91, I marked the 0.91 as "Active Notifying" to simply test the on-device notifications, and it worked as expected.
      • I marked the 0.91 as "Disabled", and that too worked as expected.
      • I deleted the 0.92, and marked the 0.91 back to "Active".
      • I made another change to the .html file, but this time I changed the version in the WL app desc xml back to 0.91 to now test the Direct Update capability.
      • From this point, please refer back to my original post as we are now at the 2nd bullet point as far as my step-by-step procedure.

Once you change the version number in application-descriptor.xml, if you do not install it also on the device, it will not get any direct updates done.
      >> Based on what I just described above, I guess that's why it isn't working. That said, I'm not sure that I agree w this limitation because the steps that I took could have easily been the same steps that someone else might have taken for the same reasons as I, or maybe they just made a mistake in the build process. Either way, if this scenario does not exist in the product documentation, we should most definitely add it as it will probably reappear in the near future when a customer calls Support and opens a PMR when they accidentally stumble into this.

Now that I'm in limbo as far as testing Direct Updates, what's your advice for getting past this situation so I can get my testing back on track and proving how Direct Update works on a device?

Can you describe your work flow from when the app had version 1.0 (default version number) in its application-descriptor.xml?
      • I think I described everything above, but if you need more info, I'd be happy to fill in whatever blanks you deem necessary.

Hello Idan and thank you for the prompt reply!

My apologies for being dense, but the scenario that you just described to get the Direct Update back in sync appears to be the same steps that I did and have done a few times since, but my Direct Update is still not working as expected.

Here are the steps you just gave me...

        11. Add more text
        12. Change version back to 1.0
        13. Build and deploy
        14. In Simulator move to background and back to foreground

As expected: Direct Update was received as the versions now match again.

From my first reply back to you...
        • I made another change to the .html file (matches your #11), but this time I changed the version in the WL app desc xml back to 0.91 (matches your #12) to now test the Direct Update capability.

        • while I did not explicitly call out my the Build and Deploy (your #13), I did do that, and I closed the app, relaunched it on my iPhone (your #14), and I do not get the Direct Update.

Is my problem w Direct Updates tied to the fact that my version is < 1.0?

My wl app desc version is back at 0.91, and I've attempted changing numerous things in my .html file, Build All and Deploy, close down the app, relaunch it, and Direct Update does not work.

I apologize for not being able to see the obvious... should I just delete my iOS environments and re-add them?

    Here's what I have done:

    1. Created a project, application
    2. Added iPhone environment
    3. Build all and deploy
    4. Move to Xcode, Run in Simulator
    5. In Eclipse, change text in the main HTML page
    6. In Simulator move to background and back to foreground

As expected, received Direct Update successfully

    7. In Eclipse, changed version to 1.1 for the iPhone environment in application-descriptor.xml
    8. Add text to the main HTML page
    9. Build and deploy
    10. In Simulator move to background and back to foreground

As expected, did not received Direct Update as the app in the simulator is set to 1.0, and I have build an app with 1.1

    11. Add more text
    12. Change version back to 1.0
    13. Build and deploy
    14. In Simulator move to background and back to foreground

As expected: Direct Update was received as the versions now match again.

    Did I miss something? :)

I will test with a version number like yours tomorrow (am not at work), but I highly doubt it matters.

Some questions (in no particular order)
    1. Which version of IBM Worklight are you using? 5.0, 5.0.0.1, 5.0.0.2, 5.0.0.3?
    2. Does it work in the Xcode Simulator? (it should)
    3. In Worklight Console, does the row that belongs to version 0.91 has the "Lock version" checkbox ticked for it?
    4. Can you try with a new application? Simply add another application to your project and add it the iPhone environment (or also create a new project if you want to)
    5. Try to invoke the Direct Update also when you go to the background and then foreground (as opposed to application launch)

      Here are my answers...

Some questions (in no particular order)
      1. Which version of IBM Worklight are you using? 5.0, 5.0.0.1, 5.0.0.2, 5.0.0.3?
      • I'm using ====== Started server for project SalesOpps-project-customization; version=0.0.0; Worklight version=5.0.2.407-developer-edition
      2. Does it work in the Xcode Simulator? (it should)
      • The short answer is "yes", however I NEVER receive the notification message from the server alerting me of the update, but I do receive the updated code
      3. In Worklight Console, does the row that belongs to version 0.91 has the "Lock version" checkbox ticked for it?
      • No
      4. Can you try with a new application? Simply add another application to your project and add it the iPhone environment (or also create a new project if you want to)
      • I didn't try it yet, but will do so and let you know.
      5. Try to invoke the Direct Update also when you go to the background and then foreground (as opposed to application launch)
      • No, it doesn't work

Sooo.... you do get the newer web resources, but only in the simulator and without the dialog to acknowledge receiving it?

Check if the property updateSilently exists in your WL.Client.init, if it is there and also set to true, this will explain why you don't get the dialog but do get the newer web resources.
This however would not explain why you get it in the simulator but not in a device, unless they do not share the same network, but if the app can connect to the Worklight Server while using a device, it would dismiss this theory. Hm.

Try with a new app and let me know how that went...

Also, any logs with information would help.
What do you see in the Xcode Console when trying to invoke the Direct Update? The application should send a request to the server upon returning to the foreground - copy the response received.

      Hello Idan,

I used your previous reply that contained the 14 steps to test my problem, and everything worked flawlessly, including the notification that an update is pending.

To answer some of your recent questions in context of my actual application...
Sooo.... you do get the newer web resources, but only in the simulator and without the dialog to acknowledge receiving it?
      • The iOS Simulator is up and running w the app... I make a web resource change in WDE, Build All and Deploy, go back to the iOS Simulator and press Sh+cmd+H (Home), bring the app back into the foreground, and nothing happens
      • I have to cmd+Q the iOS Simulator and then restart it to receive the newer web resources

      • No matter what I have done to this point, my iPhone has not received any web resource updates...

Check if the property updateSilently exists in your WL.Client.init, if it is there and also set to true, this will explain why you don't get the dialog but do get the newer web resources.
      • Here's my wl.client.init... onload="WL.Client.init({connectOnStartup:false})" id="content" style="display: none"

Hah. That was to be my next question, perhaps it should have been the first!

You have connectOnStartup set to false... This means that the application will not connect to Worklight Server upon launch.
Direct Update will not work in this situation. The application must connect to the Worklight Server.

It works for you each time you install the app, because you bring the app over with the new web resources...

Change connectOnStartup to true and you will get the newer web resources each time.
Have you set this property yourself?

      :)

I added the parameter because I needed a work-around http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21613220 to the annoying RPE "Response cannot be parsed..." error message, and it appears that I forgot to set it to true.

So as I'm writing this response, I changed the option back to "true" and issued the Build All and Deploy in WDE, and here's the iOS Simulator log...

      • That same code change should have triggered an update on my iPhone, but it did not.

Progress, but still no victory... could there be some problem w my .ipa build that's causing this?

After changing connectOnStartup to true, and building and deploying the app, did you also install it on the device, or is it the same previous one with connectOnStartup set to false?

No... it's the original .ipa that I installed for the first time on Saturday AM.

        Hello Idan,

Success!!!! I am receiving Direct Updates on my iPhone!

For clarity, here are the steps I took in Xcode...
        • Incremented the Build #, NOT the Version #, as it's still at 0.91
        • rebuilt and distributed the new .ipa archive
        • Ad-hoc installed via iTunes

        This problem is closed.

Thank you Idan for your patience and expertise!

You must install an .ipa that contains the change made to connectOnStartup=true in order to get the Direct Update also on the device of course.

Should have been solved much sooner, but I didn't think of the "obvious" (connectOnStartup=false is an obvious case for Direct Update...).

    Anyway, great to hear. :)
