Pinned topic DB2 connect

‏2012-11-17T14:49:24Z |
Hi,

Is it possible to connect to IBM DB2 on mainframes through Windows using Excel VBA without having to download IBM's DB2 connect drivers?

Thanks in advance.

The easiest way to make this connection is with the IBM Data Server Driver Package (ds driver for short) - there is a nice step by step on this web page:

    http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/db2luw/v9r7/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.swg.im.dbclient.install.doc/doc/r0058814.html

This does require DB2 Connect licensing - either a license file on the client, or a host based license if DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition was purchased.

    Hi Brent,

    Thanks for the info.

Speaking of DB2 connect, is there a free version of the software available? Or instead, is there any other free software which does not require licensing which could be used to connect to mainframes DB2 through Excel VBA?

    Thanks again in advance.

    Desmond,

There is no free version of DB2 Connect. We do have a trial license, and it is available by contacting IBM. If you do not have a regular channel to IBM to request this, please reach out to me and I can put you in contact with our product planning team.

As a related point, many of our customers with DB2 for z/OS also have DB2 Connect Unlimited Edition - and they have opted to utilize our host based license key mechanism, where our drivers look on the host for a license, there is no client side license. You may want to check if your organization has this mechanism in place.
