Pinned topic ServeRAID M5015 Online Capacity Expansion HowTo?
We have a x3650 M3 server with a ServeRAID M5015. There are (2) RAID 5 setups in place. One has (2) 146 Gb disks, the other has (5) 500 Gb disks, with one open slot in the first group of 8 drive slots. We cannot find information how to add one more 500 Gb drive which we just purchased. I see the card supports "Online Capacity Expansion (OCE) allows the capacity of a virtual disk to be expanded by adding new physical disks or making use of unused space on existing disks, without requiring a reboot", but the problem is I cannot find how to add the extra drive, or what we'll see if the drive is installed with the server running. BTW, it is running RHEL 6.
Thank you for your help!

I tried calling IBM HW Support, and was referred to a page with links to the install guide and user guide, both of which are already on the ServeRAID M CD, and neither one say how Online Capacity Expansion works, what a user will see when adding a disk, or what to do.
I called IBM SW Support, and was referred to IBM National Publications Support website, but cannot get a hit on ServerRAID M5015 or ServerRAID M.
Frankly, I am shocked at how lacking the information is, and the response we have received. We spend a fair amount of money on IBM midrange, and xSeries solutions. This is pathetic.
Re: ServeRAID M5015 Online Capacity Expansion HowTo?2012-11-12T19:36:02Z in response to SystemAdminSo far the only thing I can come up with is to migrate from RAID 5 to RAID 0, and when it is finished to migrate from RAID 0 to RAID 5, and try adding the disk during one of the migrations. Will my data remain intact during this procedure, if using the WebBIOS Config. Utility or the MegaRAID Storage Manager (MSM)? (We don't have MSM installed yet, and I'm reading documentation PDFs)
Re: ServeRAID M5015 Online Capacity Expansion HowTo?2012-11-13T13:58:26Z in response to SystemAdminWhen you are doing the migration, either raid/logical drive, the data will be in a transition from old config to new config so recommended to have data backup before migration..

Old thread, but i will answer anyways in case someone else needs to do this.
I have added HDDs to RAID 5 Virtual Disk before. The answer is on Megaraid User's Guide:
Adding a Disk Drive to a Configuration
Caution: Be sure to back up the data on the virtual disk before you
add a drive to it.
Follow these steps to add a disk drive to a configuration with the
1. Click Add Drive on the Reconstruction Wizard screen.
2. When the next screen appears, select an available disk drive in the
top panel, and click the Down Arrow button to move it to the
Selected Drive list.
3. Click Next to continue.
The next screen appears.
4. (Optional) Select a different RAID level for the configuration from the
drop-down menu in the lower right of the window.
5. Review the information in the window. If everything is acceptable,
A warning states that this operation cannot be aborted and asks
whether you want to continue.
Note: If you add a disk drive to a RAID 1 configuration, the RAID
level automatically changes to RAID 5.
A reconstruction operation begins on the virtual disk. You can monitor the
progress of the reconstruction in the Group Show Progress window. To
do this, select Group Operations->Show Progress.
