Pinned topic DS3524 Host Ports not working

‏2012-10-07T17:07:42Z |
We have a brand new DS3524 (Firmware 7.83) connected to two SAN Switches IBM 2498. Problem is that Host Ports don't come up at all. We have tried setting the fillword option but this doesn´t seem to work. We have even tried connecting the DS3524 directly to the Hosts (X3850 with Emulex Adapaters part number 42D0485) but this has not work either. We have also tried setting the speed to 8 and 4 GB (not Auto). I have the CASD File and Supportshow file for the SAN Switches. One thing to mention is that Hosts connect just fine to the switch.

Hello, we are working through the exact same issue at the moment with one of our customers.

They have a new DS3524 (7.83) and an older DS3524 (older firmware). The Older unit is working correctly with PortFill 1.
The new DS3524 with new firmware does not operate correctly with either Portfill 1 or 3, we have recently update the firmware on the FC switches to 6.4.3b but it still has not resolved the issue.

What we see is basically high error counts on the ports for the DS3524.

We have a call logged with IBM and as working through it, we have plenty of these units out there and this is new to us!

    We are using Qlogic HBA's.

    Bernie.

Hi Bernie, thanks for your feedback, let me just ask you one question. Do ports on switch where DS3524 is connected ever come up?

We have also an incident opened with IBM support and they are suggesting to reinstall firmware 7.83.22

        Hello,

Are they wanting you to downgrade the firmware? what exact version are you on now?

I say this because our set-up is not production yet, so we can try the firmware downgrade to see if it fixed the problem straight away.

Note: The solution is Stable @ 4Gb speed set.

        Bernie.

Sorry, just re-read the post, you said re-install.

We have already loaded the firmware multiple times with no success.

We are going to ask IBM if we can downgrade the firmware.

          Bernie.

            Can I ask you....

Did you first order and use this unit without Fibre channel Daughter card options? and then add them later?

            thanks

              Tulien,

              To Answer your question.

              1. At first the ports did not come up at all, no lights nothing.
              2. Then we performed the firmware updates (multiple times...same firmware) and the ports became visible.
              3. Now the issue is that they are not staying up reliably @ 8Gb, even with the idle port settings.

This unit was first delivered without the FC daughter cards, then they were added later.

              Bernie

That is correct, we had to install the daughter 8FC Cards. They did not come install from factory

It will be interesting to see once you get it working with the firmware re-installed whether you have problems with Syncing @ 8Gb.

                  Let me know.

                  Bernie.

                    Hello Tulein,

Is there any chance you can confirm the SFP GBIC type you have in the FC slot on your DS3524?
If you could let me know the brand and details on the labelling it would be appreciated.

This will require a visual inspection.

                    Bernie.

    <<<< Problem Solved >>>>

Customer had installed Brocade SFP's in controller B and the Correct IBM DS SFP's in Controller A.

Once we removed all Brocade SFP's from the DS3524 and Spread them across both controllers the issue was resolved.

We did however have to re "drop" all FC ports and then bring them back online to get healthy connections.

Note: This is @ 8Gb speed.

This is also with fillport set to 3 on storage ports.

    Bernie.
