Pinned topic System x3400 M3 7379 w/ServeRAID M5015 - Hard Drive Slot IDs don't match

‏2012-10-03T13:47:27Z |
Hi,

I'm setting up a new server in France. We have 2 drives installed in slots 0-1 on which we will mirror and install VMWare. And we have 3 storage drives to configure as RAID5, installed in slots 4-6. My contact in France has sent me pictures to confirm the physical installation.

However, when I stop in the MegaRAID WebBios configurator for the M5015 controller, it shows the storage drives in slots 0-2 and the OS drives in 4-5. We have tried switching the 2 SAS cables coming from the backplane at the controller side. I assumed 0-3 would go to 4-7 and 4-7 would go to 0-3. This did not happen. In both cases, there was no change, the drives show as 0-2 and 4-5 in the WebBios.

I would like to ensure the software matches the physical installation. Otherwise, several years from now when replacing a dead drive there may be confusion as to which drive needs to be replaced. Our alerts will be indicating the wrong slot. We definitely need to avoid any possible confusion.

Any idea? Thanks in advance for the assistance.

    Hi Nick,

first of all update ALL server's software (iMM, uEFI, M5015 firmware, ...).
If it not helped, call to your local IBM HW Support and open a warranty case.
    Inform us about results, please.

    Thank you for the reply.

I used a BMC iso to flash hardware before doing anything, even entering the WebBIOS config. Everything was already up to date. I was hoping it may be an easy/known issue so I don't have to deal with IBM in France (my French is not so good), but I guess we'll have to head that route. I'll reply back here once we know something.

    Thanks,
    Nick

IBM Support in France was able to straighten this out. I'm not sure what they did to resolve it. I'll be traveling there onsite next month, so I'll see if I can figure it out then. If I learn what was done to correct it, I'll reply back here in case anyone else has the issue.

    Thanks,
    Nick
