Pinned topic Cubebuild and read time from the DB takes a long time -intermittent issue

‏2012-10-02T14:34:40Z |
Hi,

hoping someone could shed light on this intermittent issue we have been having with cubebuilds
basically we have cubebuilds that take roughly 1 hr. Then over a course of a month or so cubebuild time goes up to 2 to 3 hrs. We bounce both the db and cubebuild server and build times go down to 1hr.
In the transformer logs the increase in time is attributed to the read phase of the cubebuild cycle.
When cubebuilds are fast the read phase from the db to temp file (uda) is 35 min. When slow its over an hr and increases as time goes on.
Once the read phase is over and category sorting and consolidation takes over the cubebuild server is fast.
BI 10.1 on Windows Server 2008 and Informix 11.7 on Linux 2.6.32-71.24.1

Thoughts,
Thanks,

To start with, you need to identify whether the problem is at the DB server or the Cognos server. Instead of rebooting both servers it would be a better idea to reboot just one and see if this corrects the problem. If the problem does not correct then this is a rough indication that the problem is at the other server.

The next thing is to actually look at the servers when the system is running well and when the problem is occurring. You should be looking for system information such as:
    • cpu usage
    • ram usage
    • virtual memory usage
    • the paging of memory to disk for the Cognos Transformer process
    • the paging of memory to disk for the Database software
    • the network bandwidth between the two servers

You can also look at the database activity to see if the query issued by Transformer is still executing on the database or if the results have been defined but the time is being spent waiting for Transformer to fetch the data.

Once you have narrowed down the scenario in a bit more detail it may be possible to go a little further to resolve the problem.

Thank you Phil, your guidance is always well thought out and informative.
