We are planning to upgrade clearcase from 126.96.36.199 to 188.8.131.52. Initially I have upgraded the client to 184.108.40.206 and the server is still in 220.127.116.11. Is there any porblem is keeping the server patch lower than the client version?
I have checked this technote http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21597061 and it says "18.104.22.168 client should be OK to connect to 22.214.171.124 server". Have anyone seen any issue with the version mismatch between client and the server?

We did not encounter any interop issues.

It should not be problem according to IBM if you have server at 7.0.1 and client at 7.1 or if you have server at 7.1 then the client can be on 7.0.x or on 7.1.x.
but if you have server at 7.1.2 you can not use if you have client at 7.0.x or at 7.1.x
This is applicable for CCRC client only but for thick client this does not matter.
