Pinned topic DS3512 Doesn't accpet/recognize 8GB spped SAN Connection

‏2012-09-16T08:22:00Z |
Hi,

I've been configuring DS3512 (Firmware 10.83) that will connect thru SAN to a BladeCenter H Chassis. First, I set and configure all the volumes, LUNs and Host Mapping on the Storage side, upon zoning the storage to the blade servers, it seems that the port from SAN Switch (Port 0 of Brocade Enterprise 20-port 8 Gb SAN Switch Module for IBM BladeCenter P/N: 42C1828) becomes faulty when I set the connection speed to 'Auto' or '8Gb'. But when I set it to '4Gb' speed, the port becomes healthy, stable and can communicate to storage. Is there an issue between these two? I'm somehow puzzled because the DS3512 is capable of 8Gb speed and so thus the SAN Switch. Can someone enlighten me with this issue I encountered. Or I'm the only one who encountered this issue? I've already mounted the DataStore to the servers and currently using 4Gb speed. But I guess this speed is not the one we expect.

Here are some additional information.
Model: Blade Server HS22 MT 7870
SFP of SAN Switch: (44X1962) Brocade 8 Gb SFP+ SW Optical Transceiver
OS: ESXi 5.0 U1

Attached are some snapshots taken from the SAN Switch.

if the switch is accepts it set the fillword mode for the port to 3 using portcfgfillword. if not, update to the latest supported code. meanwhile use fillword mode 0 as a workaround...

    Hi seb,

May I know where I can configure or change that value?

    Thanks.

I would do it in the CLI (could be that you have to enable it first in the bladecenter management module and then login as USERID or admin). The command is

    portcfgfillword port mode

So for the first external port it would be:

    portcfgfillword 0 3

    Dear Reginald,

    Hi seb / Alexander,
Thanks to you guys. The SAN Switch and the DS3512 are now communicating..
If you will extend more you're help to me, how do I configure the multipathing for both controller A and B? Do I need to configure it on the Storage side (which the preferred controller is A) or on the VM Side?

    Additional info:
-I already configured and zone both the Controllers A and B. The only thing left for me is to configure the multipathing.

Hope you can help me again guys.

    Thanks.

    Hi Reginald,

    you are welcome.

In most cases (and in your case too) configuring of the multipathing is not needed, just install multypathing software and relax (there are OSs with integrated multipathing software).
