Pinned topic IBM x3400 RAID10 - consistency check sometimes make some corrections

‏2012-05-12T10:36:58Z |
Hello. I have 2 x3400 servers. Both with 4 SAS drives in RAID10. Raid controllers are without battery so there are working in WT mode, but it should not matter. Raid controller sometimes make some corrections (about 12 corrections) during periodically tests (in log: Consistency check done with corrections ...). This problem occurs on both servers. Is it normal?

I can not upload it to this forum. It contains a lot of privacy information. Where should I upload it? ... or should I upload only part of log file?

    Hi Valik,

    there are two options:

    1. you can upload it to IBM dewelopersWorks file share with needed confidential state:
    https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/files/app/shares/?lang=en

    2. call to your local IBM HW Support and ask their help.

    Hi Valik,

first of all update all server's software. You can use BoMC tool for creating bootable media with latest firmwares :

    IBM Bootable Media Creator (BoMC)
    https://www-947.ibm.com/support/entry/myportal/docdisplay?lndocid=TOOL-BOMC

If it not helped, post updated DSA log. Upload *.xml.gz file, please.

    Valik,

also update MegaRAID Storage Manager upto fresh version:

    Support matrix - SAS/SATA II (ServeRAID-MR10i, MR10ie, MR10il, MR10is, MR10k, MR10M, M5014, M5015, M5016 and M5025)

I'm quite worry about firmware updates especially because I found two optimal ways to do it. What is difference between BoMC and UpdateXpress? I read pdf manuals and it seems that BoMC creates linux bootable CD with UpdateXpress inside. But UpdateXpress exists even for Windows. Why should I use BoMC? Is it better, safer? Windows UpdateXpress use windows firmware files and BoMC use linux x86-64 firmware files. What is different in Windows and Linux firmware? Windows UpdateXpress should also update windows drivers, isn't it better?

    Hi Valik,

    > Why should I use BoMC? Is it better, safer?

if you don't want or if you can't use update tools in your OS, the BoMC bootable media is the only option for install firmware updates.

    > What is different in Windows and Linux firmware?

    no difference.

    > Windows UpdateXpress should also update windows drivers, isn't it better?

if you need update windows drivers, UpdateXpress good tool for you.

I upgraded all drivers and firmware but problem still occurs. After upgrade, I executed consistency check and it corrected several inconsistent parity data. Next consistency check was ok. Next day I executed check again and it found inconsistent parity too. What should I do next?

    Hi Valik,

why so old software still used on your server?
First of all update ALL software (ServeRAID M5014 firmware/driver, uEFI, iMM, ...).

It was not so old software. It was latest release from May. Now I upgraded everything to the latest version, but problem still occurs.

Which RAID controller are you using? M5014, M5015, M1015?

When did the problem start happening?

Both servers use M5014 without batteries. This problem was always (from the time I bought these servers, so 1 year now).

What type of application is the system, RAID 10 array, being used for? It is not uncommon to see consistency check messages during high I/O. There are no data concerns.

It is Windows 2008R2 active directory + file server (for 60 computers) + mssql server (not big load, max. 3 connections at a time).
