Pinned topic IMPACT 5.1.1: Java Memory recommendations for a production system

‏2012-05-04T18:55:28Z |
I have a production soalris system with 32G RAM. Currently impact is running with the default maimum size (-Xmx) of 1200. When I turn on Self monitoring, I am seeing the message: "Impact's Heap size is very close to Max Heap Size! Alert: Low System Memory! Impact's Heap using 1049M out of 1200M, Free System Memory Available: 857M". Have a few questions before I increase

a) what is typical values used in production. I know this can vary depending on the need. Just polling other users if they always increase it when in production to a certain value.
b) should I increase the number gradually as and when I see this error. Or is there anything wrong with bumping it to say 2400 or 3600.
c) is there a maximum limit on this value based on the server ram size?

TIA
Ravi

    Ravi,
Since this is a 64 bit install, you can increase the max heap size to something much higher - even more than 3600.
There is no such higher value based on server RAM size, rather you should consider the amount of memory that would be available to Impact at Runtime, like are there any other applications running on this machine and hence Impact would have to "share" memory with them? If for example you know that no matter what Impact would always have atleast 10GB of free memory available for it - you could then set the max heap to 9600.
