Pinned topic Update AIX 5.2 to AIX 7.1 and gigabyte ethernet-sx pci-x adapter stops

Device ent1 is a feature code 5700 gigabyte/fibre adapter on a machine type 7029 pSeries 615 Model 6C3 rack mount, Power4. Worked under 5.2. Doesn't work under 7.1. It is supported under 7.1 according to both of these sources:

And the device drivers (devices.pci.14106802.*) seem to be there and committed (see below).

However the card acts as if it wasn't connected to the fibre. The system will ping itself but can't ping its own gateway for example. I've tried deleting the device, and the tcp/ip connection, and everything else I can think of deleting. Then recreate it with "cfgmgr -v" and "smitty tcpip". Did that a couple of times. I finally resorted to turning on ent2 at 100Mb and using that to get the system at least up and responsive. But 100Mb isn't 1000Mb and it shows in performance.

Ideas?

    Three:
    Can you configure and address on it, and bring it and inet0 (mkdev -l inet0) up and then post:

    Three:
    Can you configure and address on it, and bring it and inet0 (mkdev -l inet0) up and then post:
    lsattr -El ent0
    lsattr -El en0
    entstat -d ent{1,2,3} says that all three are "up" even though only ent2 is presently configured.
    Interestingly, lsattr -El ent{1,2,3} correctly shows the up/down state. Only ent2 is currently up.

    The machine has three Ethernet interfaces. Two of them are part of the base
    machine (ent0, ent2) and one is a PCI-X board (ent1). ent1 is the one that
    stopped working. ent0 and ent2 were not previously in use. Presently ent2
    is up and active. ent0 and ent1 are neither.

    What apparently happened is that AIX decided, during the upgrade, that the gigabit ethernet card had a problem and it, in the words of the FE, AIX "fenced off" the card so that it could not work.

    So the fix for this was:
    1) Go into smitty and log a repair action against the card. Thus clearing away all error log entries about it.
    2) Remove the network interface associated with the card. rmdev -l en1 ; rmdev -l ent1
    3) cfgmgr -v
    4) smitty tcpip - and reestablish the existence, netmask, and address of the interface
    5) at this point the machine could ping other machines, something it could not do before, but could not ping itself (network not reachable, although all of the machines are on the same subnet), whereas it could ping itself before but not others, so reboot the machine

    And now it works just fine. Apparently AIX had made up its mind that the card had a problem and the symptom of this is that you can't use the connection. No other obvious warnings. Odd and confusing. But it works now.
