Pinned topic mksysb not running

‏2012-04-17T21:15:08Z |
Hello,

AIX 6.1 TL7

I'm setting up a script to run a mksysb to a nim server.

I run mksysb -i /mnt/my_system_name.mksysb . . . . . and it just sits there and does nothing.

If I run smitty mksysb and enter the equivalent parameters it runs.

Any reason why mksysb works from smitty but not from ksh?

Well, I can only say that it works here. I got "Creating information file (/image.data) for rootvg." line and then terminated it.

Consider using -X and -v switches

It's worked everywhere else I've been to.

I get the same on 4 LPARs.

I've tried using -i -X but no differece.

    I've also tried using /usr/bin/mksysb

    I'm baffled.

Did you know, that /usr/bin/mksysb is just a ksh script?
As a last resort you can run:

    ksh -x /usr/bin/mksysb........

Curious, is /mnt local or nfs on these lpar(s)? any permissions/space issue on /mnt? Although I would think it would timeout fail or spit some error and not just sit there as you said. Did you try directing the file to any other location by any chance?

Yeah tried it to local file and remote.

    I ran khs -x mksysb -i -v /tmp/mksysb/test and got:

What oslevel, TL level? not that it matters but are these virtual lpars, SAN based rootvg drives or local?

    Virtual
SAN based rootvg using SDDPCM for MPIO

As I said in my first post. This works fine if I run using smitty mksysb but that's not much use as I need to add a cron job.

Odd. Can you try running with -A flag?

    When I run a mksysb like you from command line vs. smitty (btw both work for me), I noticed smitty adds -A flag, when I pick the defaults. Do shift+F6 to see the command. And, heres some links with more info;

Not sure if this is it but for what it's worth if the /mnt is NFS mounted you have a permission issue on the host where it really lives. The question was asked if it was NFS but I didn't see that you answered that. Maybe I missed it.

Just check to be sure if it is. Can't hurt.
I run into this alot with my NIM clients because I forget to change permissions on my NIM software dirs.

Just tried that and . . . . no different.

I tried the same on my NIM server and it works a treat.

The only difference is that on the servers where it DOESN'T work from the CLI I su - in as root as root is restricted from logging on at a terminal.

On my NIM server root login as permitted.

The /mnt permissions are fine. If I run the mksysb to /mnt from smit it work as expected.

Well.. gotta be something with the root id characterstics then, maybe compare settings with your NIM server's root id characterstics, umask etc perhaps. Sounds like its something simple somewhere.
