Pinned topic ESX5 X3650M3 DS3512 SAS-Connection VMware HCL=supported IBM SSIC= no

‏2012-01-03T16:49:39Z |
Hello
what shall I do with this situation ?

Checked VMware HCL which states SAS to DS3512 in ESX5 supported.

Installed ESX5 successfully. SAS worked perfect. After about 14 days 1 SAS-HBA becomes defect and at this time I was informed according to IBM SSIC this is not supported.
Only ESXi4U1 ***even not ESXi4U2***

Looking closer on SSIC list only LSI-Branded SAS-Adapters seem to be supported.

But I only can configure IBM 6Gb SAS HBA 46M0907 in the Configuration Tool !!!

Is this realy my fault ?

Regards Harry

    Dear Heinz,

call to your local IBM sales representative and ask him about special IBM support for your configuration.

    Same issue here,

    two customers.

    1. SAS direct connect two hosts to DS3524... all channels go dead only a reboot of host brings channels back.
    2. Customer with Tape drive to same HBA with vSphere 5.0, trying to direct map to backup server VM....Tape drive is seen but does not work correctly.

Seems to be related to the 46M0907 not being supported by vSphere 5.0, however it is the EXACT same card as LSI SAS 9212-4i4e which does support Vsphere 5.0 (Newer firmware)...

This is going to be a big issue for IBM as this type of configuration is "Bread and Butter" for IBM Partners!

Hurry up IBM and get it supported!!

    Bernard.

Next thing to try, load new LSI firmware on IBM card.

    Hi Bernard,

maybe this could be your case:

    http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1030265

    KB Article: 1030265

vHBAs and other PCI devices may stop responding in ESX/ESXi 4.1 and ESXi 5.0 when using Interrupt Remapping

    IBM TA told me this

    Hi Heinzrienhardt

We had already applied the fix TB you mentioned and still had problems.
We have also disable VT-d in BIOS and are waiting to see the results.

We installed LSI 9212-414e cards into one of the hosts with the latest firmware (they are listed as supporting vShpere 5.0), the load has gone onto the host this morning so we are waiting to see the results.

We have also been able to Flash the IBM 6Gb HBA cards with the LSI firmware, so we will be testing these next to see if it makes any difference as the LSI firmware is newer than the IBM firmware (and is listed as supported for vSphere 5.0)

(On a side note, we can now enable RAID support on the IBM 6Gb HBA with the LSI firmware tools!)

    regards

    Bernard.

Probably you solved the issue but have a look at my post at Vmware site:

At 12 January we disabled VT-d and since this time we did not have any problems with the SAS HBAs.

IBM Support mentioned to us this VMware KB because they received back too many HBAs declared as defect.
