Pinned topic Help installing R and extension bundle on iMac

‏2011-12-19T16:50:32Z |
Hello John

I'm having trouble with installing R. I downloaded R essentials for imac and downloaded the STATS GRM extension.
R was installed on the computer, but when I went to utilities, extension bundle, in SPSS and tried to install GRM extension bundle, I got the msg:

Cannot install extension bundle. You must install the Integration Plug-in for R before installing this extension bundle.

David M at SPSS said he didn't know why the plug-in didn't load with R essentials.

Can you help me fix this?

Thanks!

You don't say what version you are using. Do you have the right version of R for that version?

Did you install the R Essentials using Run as Administrtor if you are on Win7 or Vista?

What happens if you run this program from the syntax window?

    begin program r.
    print('ok')
    end program.

    Running OS X 10.6.7

I did install R essentials as administrator.

I can't seem to open the syntax window to run that program. I don't see the green arrow at the top. \

Tried Utilities, Run script, and got a dialog box with

Python scripts cannot be executed. Please check whether Python and the integration plug-in have been installed.

    Jon,

Should I run that program in SPSS script or R console?

Ok, in SPSS I did the file>new>syntax
and typed in the commands you recommended and got

    Error #100. Command name: print
This command is not permitted before the beginning of file definition commands
    Execution of this command stops
    end program

Do I have to open a data file first?

No, you didn't properly enter the code. I suspect that you left off the period after
    begin program r.
because you got an SPSS error message, not an R message.

I ran it again to be sure

    received the following

    print('ok')
    end program.

    > Error #4702 in column 6. Text: (
    >An unexpected symbol was encountered on an output command.
    >Execution of this command stops

And I got subsequent similar errors 4702 and 4700 re inputs ), end, program

You still don't have it right. Start a new Statistics session. Open a syntax window. Copy and paste this program and then run it. Be sure to select all the lines when you run it.

    begin program r.
    print('ok')
    end program.

Ok, I did exactly as you said. Pasted the text in and pressed the green arrow key, and got this:

    print('ok')

    >Error # 100. Command name: print
    >This command is not permitted before the beginning of file definition
    >commands.
    >Execution of this command stops.

So when you say "select text" you mean highlight all of the lines, right?

I did that, and pressed the green arrow, and got:

    print('ok')

    >Error # 100. Command name: print
    >This command is not permitted before the beginning of file definition

    print('ok')
    end program.

    >Error # 6890. Command name: begin program
    >Configuration file spssdxcfg.ini is invalid.
    >Execution of this command stops.
Configration file spssdxcfg.ini is invalid because the LIB_NAME is NULL.

The part at the bottom means that the R Essentials are not installed correctly. R programs and extension commands that use them such as STATS DISTFIT will not work correctly until that problem is resolved. I can't guess what is wrong, so I suggest that you remove the plugin and reinstall it. If that won't work, you will have to go back to Technical Support.

Do you mean uninstall R completely, and download and install anew?

I am just referring to the R Essentials. There is no need to uninstall R itself.
