Pinned topic Announce: Kolban's Book on IBM BPM

‏2011-12-05T17:41:22Z |

Folks,
I am delighted to announce that there is now a free book on IBM BPM available. This book contains all my written notes on using the product and related technologies. It is as-is and is not to be considered an official piece of documentation from IBM. Rather, it contains my practical experiences while learning and using the products. It may very well contain technical and factual errors and does not represent any explicit statements from IBM about content or future directions.

That all said, many have already found it useful and I hope you will too. The book will be refreshed monthly as a PDF.

I hope you find something useful with. Feedback, comments and areas to cover are very welcome.

The book can be found here:

      Hi there,
The web server on which the book is hosted is a GoDaddy server. Personally, I haven't seen it down myself. Every time I go and check on it, its up and available. I'm looking for a pattern as to when it may be "down". If you have trouble accessing it, let me know the time (and local time zone) when you see it unavailable.

      Hi Neil.

      Your book is fantastic. Thanks.

I'm begining a project with IBPM and I need to do something. I have a process "A" which runs as updates a variable that represents a state. On the other hand I have a process "B" which is exposed as web service and should consult the value of the variable state of the process "A".

¿How could I access the process variable "A"?

      Regards.

Thank you very much for this book. It is really excellent. Is there a way we can have your post made "sticky" as in mqseries.net? I believe this post should be at the top.

Hi there. Glad you are finding some value in the material, that was my hope. As for making the post sticky and at the top, Ive never seen such a post in any other IBM DeveloperWorks forum so it may not be technically possible.

It's interesting you mention MQSeries.net. Have we met before? In the 90's my job was to be very technical for IBM but this time in the MQSeries (now WebSphere MQ) world. I tried to do a similar sort of thing as I am doing now for BPM but then for MQSeries ... had our paths crossed then or was it just coincidence that you mentioned MQ?

    Hi Kolban,

Great job with your book!!! I have looked IBPM Kolban's Book Dec 2011 Version.

We are still using WLE 7.2 though and seems like there was a version of this book which was released 01/01/2011 which was for 7.2. Where do I find the link for that book?

    Thanks,

      Shashi,
When I first started studying what was then the old Lombardi product which got renamed to IBM WLE and has now been consumed into IBM BPM ... the names of my notes/book had to keep changing. When I started writing my notes, my note taking started at WLE 7.2. When we moved to IBM BPM, I walked through the book and renamed most of the WLE references to IBM BPM (IBPM). Other than that, the content remains the same (or very similar). I can't (off the top of my head) remember any substantive changes that would invalidate even the current IBPM 7.5.1 material for WLE 7.2. I would suggest that we not go with the old version and keep plugging along with the 7.5.1 version of the book. Even though it may say 7.5.1 and have 7.5.1 screen shots, the vast majority is still pertinent.

    Neil,

Great book. Thanks a lot for sharing. It is really helpful. Pretty descriptive.

Some corrections for future releases. I was trying the Dojo examples in IBM BPM 7.5.0.1 and it didn't work as is (page 271) so I debugged and following changes are required i guess. Its working for me in IE 8.0

    Additions (from the lombardi wiki)
    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="script/dojo/1.4.3/dijit/themes/soria/soria.css"/>
    <style type="text/css">
    body, html { font-family:helvetica,arial,sans-serif; font-size:90%; }
    </style>

Modification (just the version change from 1.3.2 to 1.4.3)
    <style type="text/css">
    @import "script/dojo/1.4.3/dojox/grid/resources/Grid.css";
    @import "script/dojo/1.4.3/dojox/grid/resources/soriaGrid.css";

    Hope this helps

      Manish,
nice!! - Thank you SOO much for that. When I did my tests it was on an earlier release which had an earlier version of Dojo ... your catch and explanation were perfect and I have changed the source document to reflect the updates. I use IBM Lotus Symphony (not Microsoft Word) for the document (just fyi). The changes will be present in the Feb 2012 release.

I sure do appreciate feedback for corrections. My goal was to help folks and not make things worse by sharing knowledge that is either wrong or out of date ... so catches of "That didn't work!!" get high priority attention from me.

    Hi Neil,

The book is indeed very useful. Though you are mentioning that some part needs update after release of IBPM v7.5, but I found majority are still very much relevant.

The reason I am writing is:
one of the link is not working. For the offline infocenter (page 57: 2012-01.pdf).

    https://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/iwm/web/reg/download.do?source=AW-0M5&S_PKG=0M5&lang=en_US&cp=UTF-8

even the zip file mentioned: IBM-Help-Win32-341.zip is not available at IBM sites. I even tried google.

Why I am looking for this offline infocenter is because, I need to travel sometime and I am offline. at those time I am not able to get the required help system with me.

If the link has been shifted or if you know from anywhere I can get the zip file, that would be really great help.

    Thanks

      Sukdeb,
      I found the following:

      http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg24031355

This appears to show where one can get the IEHS which is the software for viewing the InfoCenter documents.

And it appears the latest 7.5.1 docs can be obtained here:

      http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/dmndhelp/downloads/v7r5m1/localhelp_bpm751.zip

Hope this works and will update the book in the next release.

    Hi Folks,
Wow ... am dissapointed to report I am a week late on the February release. I was all set to release it but then had to travel to Scotland for an unexpected event and am only just back.

But ... here we are ... The February release is now up. One of the major additions this month is a ton of stuff on ... Google Web Toolkit (GWT). Ive been working in that area with its relationship to IBPM and have been logging my notes in the book. Usual book bug fixes and other goodies also included. As always, hope y'all find something useful in there and lots more to come.

This thread on the forum is really only for discussions on the PDF of that is being distributed as described in the first post of the thread. It feels like your question is a good but general question related to IBPM. Can I ask that you post your question in its own thread?

Thanks for the kind words Bornik. Comments like this make my day. When IBM bought the Lombardi company, it took me a while to start looking at the new acquisition. My BPM heritage had been MQ Workflow (pre 2000), Interchange Server (2001), WBI Server Foundation (2004), WebSphere Process Server (2005). I found that the Teamworks product allowed me to use my old skills while at the same time allowed me to learn new ones. Now that both WPS and Lombardi are "dead" from a futures perspective and IBM has a single, integrated offering in the form of IBM BPM ... I am like a pig in poo in terms of all the new goodies to study, share and help others learn while they teach me at the same time.

All going well, I hope to keep updating my PDF notes and make more videos and keep up with the forums.

          Hi there elango,
With you now my friend. Unfortunately, I only have one install of the product on my machine and that is always kept at the latest and greatest code levels for demonstration purposes. What this means is that when I built the code that is on the web site, I built it using IBM BPM 7.5.1. Even if I could get my hands on a 7.5.0 environment, I think I would have to manually re-enter the solution (too much work) as it wouldn't import into a 7.5.0 environment (since it was built at 7.5.1). I'm afraid the 7.5.1 code is all I will be able to share.

Sorry ... but I think we are stuck.

Thank you again, Neil, for the awesome book.

Could it be possible to write two-three lines in the future editions for the new things in the book. It would be very helpful for people like me, who read it from end to end xaxa.

          Hi Rado,
Sounds like a smart idea :-) ... However, I sure wouldn't read it end to end each time it comes out. There is a ton of content in it but the "editing" of that content is all over the place. As one month passes to the next, what I do is that whatever I am working on during that day, when the day is done, I go read about it in my own notes. If Ive learned something new, I add them to the notes. If I now considered the notes wrong or could be improved, I tinker with those notes. What I mean by this is that there is no structure to what I add or change ... it is all a function of what I work upon that day ... which in many cases is a function of what questions are hot in the forum. By and large we are now "polishing" the periphery. For example, during March I was studying WODM (JRules) and added sections on that into the notes. For the majority of us at this time, no great relationship to IBM BPM. Same with GWT.

As an aside, playing with Unity Game programming in the evenings but won't add that to the book :-)

What's the story with the deviantart link? I'm a big fan of that web site. Are you perhaps an artist there?

Well, you could just write down 2-3 lines if there is some `major` update or something like that хаха

About the deviantart link - these are my brother's works, which I am very proud of :)

            Rado

PS: Personaly, I wouldn't mind if you write down and 2-3 lines about Unity

    Hi folks,
Got a little late with the May release of the book. Was at IBM's Impact 2012 conference in Las Vegas. A couple of nights in Las Vegas is nice but Saturday-Friday ... ouch ... too much of a good thing. The May release of the book is out and mostly cleanup as I correct errors and tweak. IBM announced the IBM BPM v8.0 release which I understand to be available later this month. As such, that should give me plenty to cover over the next few months.

As always, latest version of the book is available for free download here:

Hope y'all get some benefit from it.

Many thanks for the kind words my friends. It always makes my day to hear that there is some value in the writings. Ive been with customers for the last few weeks and am now just starting to study v8. I expect the majority of the new updates will be on using the new features contained within. Hi folks,
First of the month again so time for another drop. Ive been visiting customers most of the last 4 weeks so nothing too much new in this release. Ive spent a few days with v8 and am starting to work through the changes. This is giving me pause on what to do with pre v8 materials. For example, in v8, the whole Coach Designer and Process Portal technology has completely changed ... so the question becomes one of do I keep both in these notes or only the new v8 material? My current leaning is to remove the pre-v8 material and replace it with the v8 equivalents. This will make the book smaller and hence easier to perhaps find what you are looking for. The back-issues will still be around for those looking for pre-v8 materials.

The v8 content should start to appear in a much more solid form in the July edition and beyond.

I like the idea of keeping the Pre8 and post8 separated. I think that will be less confusing (and less work for you to have to preface stuff as pre8 and post8 if it is not applicable to both).

But then the downside is that the pre8 stuff would no longer have any updates. But eventually everyone would theoretically be on 8 and would not have to look two places.

      Hi CBradley,
The reality is that I have already re-imaged my machines to v8 and simply don't have a pre v8 environment installed anymore. All new information from me will be exclusively as determined on the v8 environment.

    Hi folks,
I am pleased to release the July 2012 edition of the book. Mostly changes and reworks for v8 in this release but tons more to go. I am finding myself "troubled" by some of the dramatic changes in v8 from previous releases. Some of them appear to be revolutionary vs evolutionary. From a book content perspective, this is "challenging" as it means I need to rip and replace as opposed to update. The bottom line is that there are increasing sections which are relevant to pre v8 which have no relevance in v8 and since I haven't addressed those yet, there will be confusion for those reading it having never before seen pre v8 and will be looking for "things" which don't yet exist. Only time and patience will cure this I'm afraid.

As always, hope you find something useful within and I plan on lots and lots more releases to come as I learn and study more.

      Vikash,
By and large, I keep adding "stuff" and only occasionally take stuff away. If we went back in time to a version of the book back in the WLE 7.2 days, it might have less than 100 pages at that time :-)

What this means is that there isn't a version of the book in existence which covered so much material but was focused at the 7.2 release.

You update this document with a mind-blowing consistency. I admire you Neil. Anyone would think of monetizing such a rich content but you choose to share it for free with everyone. May God bless you to live longer and serve humanity.

More than food or money, the biggest donation one can give is 'Knowledge'. Rest would follow. A bow to you on behalf of our BPM community.

I recently got to work on integrating Adobe Flex with 7.5.1, and I found your article very useful. It was succinct and sufficient enough for anyone to get started.

      Thank you, and cheers.

        Vignesh,
You make me blush. Those are some of the kindest words I have ever read. I appreciate your good thoughts very much. The truth is I really enjoy my job and studying a product is similar to working a cross word puzzle or some similar "mental challenge". IBM pays me to work upon the product but not specially for forum posting or writing PDFs of notes. Rather, I work on the simplest of philosophies that there is nothing in the product that I haven't learned myself by studying what others have previously written or said. Each time I learn a new morsel of information, I try and share it with everyone who may be interested. Because of the many other good people who do the same, together we build, record and share that knowledge. There are many users of our product who have the task of achieving a specific project and don't (correctly) have the time or inclination to spend more time than needed in study. It is primarily for these folks that I strive. To provide pointers to paths through the forest that others have walked before.

I have no plans to change what I am doing so hopefully much more of the same to come in the future.

Excellent book - many good examples.I co-edited/co-authored the "GBS best practice for modeling" doc so I really appreciate the hard work needed to keep up with the changes.
One important improvement in V8 is the changed semantics of TerminateEvent - you mention a couple of times that TerminateEvent terminates the whole process instance - all parent processes.
In V8 you can select to terminate only the current subprocess or the whole tree - a great help in many patterns eg reminder patterns. This change may impact some of the samples you have.
The services/function table on p211-212 omit some features - for my part the availability/lack of timer functions in various service types was the most confusing in the beginning - both the decoration of other activities and the Wait function. Kust a suggestion to include that in the table.

<sigh>. Thanks Paul. I messed up. I uploaded last night before I caught a plane to visit with a customer all this week. Problem was, I failed to actually upload the PDF. I changed the web page and built new cover images ... but ... failed at the most important part. It won't be till Saturday when I get home that I can upload. Sorry folks.

Excellent book! Its now became my bible to BPM8.

A small request - would it be possible to add in more details on the integration between Process Designer and Integration Designer, especially around Integration Designer invoking Process Designer (not AIS). You have mentioned in the September release that we can use JMS and REST. Perhaps we can also add a section where we can actually use a BPD SCA import directly in Integration Designer. I do have a question though, not sure if i am posting in the right forum, but how would we go about calling a BPD Incoming message event from integration designer? We can probably use JMS, but that's so clunky to use. Are there any other ways (eg. SCA)?

      Hi guys ...

I have now uploaded the October 2012 version. I blew it in a rush last weekend during the upload. I updated the web site with the October information, changed the links but failed to upload the PDF itself. This has now been rectified. I have now instituted a policy to explicitly download the PDF myself after changing the information at the 1st of each month. Hopefully that will resolve the problem in future. What was worse this time was that the changes I made were done before I ran to catch a flight to a customer that had me out of town all week and the October PDF was on my PC at home as well as my web page editing software/tools.

So much for nine nines of availability :-)

    Hi Neil,
Thank you for such a good book and your effort to keep it updated, it's admirable.
Just a comment about the installation content, at least in my experience (I'm really newbie though :) ), the Profile Management Tool has problems on 64-bits architectures, so the profiles have to be created using the command line. Maybe it's just a misconfiguration but IF that is not the case, it worth the mention (I have tested this on Win server 2003 and 2008).
Thanks anyway and hope to hear from you soon.

      Hi Carlos,
Thanks for the kind words. Prior to WAS v8, it is very true that PMT just simply didn't exist/work on 64 bit architectures. However, when we got IBM BPM v8 and WAS 8, the story changed and PMT seems to work fine (at least for me) and is listed as fully supported.

When it comes to the book content, I try and edit based on the latest available releases (as those are the ones I work on and ... truth be told ... the book is primarily for me). Ive never seen a product change from release to release as much as this one and my internal jury is still out on whether or not that is a good thing.

            Anil,
Thanks for the report. You did the right thing posting the report here. It is very possible for me to make a mistake and the sooner that is corrected the better. This PDF is a collaborative effort, I see us all as a community of BPM folks so any and all info is welcome. Glad you are enjoying the goodies. In a few weeks 8.0.1 will hit the streets and that should keep me busy while I look and see what is new and try and cover that new content.

Thanks for sharing the book. Its really helpful. Quick question - How did you setup the Windows Live email client for hMailServer. I installed the server on my windows 7 laptop and was trying to configure Windows Live email to access the same but I keep getting error "connection timed out". Do you have any pointers how to setup the email client so that I can test the send email code in local.

Wow ... December again. Here is the December release of the book. I heard a story this week, a vendor said "We have released a new version of our product" to which a developer murmured "They didn't so much as release it as it escaped!" :-)

This release sees the gradual migration to 8.0.1 content.

Hope there is something in it that you can use.

Hmmm ... January 2013. January always feels a strange month to me. The start of a new year full of hope and promise while at the same time a blank canvas stretching on full of unknowns and challenges. After a holiday period it is always "tough" getting back into the swing of work ... so sometimes some wrote routines are not bad. So, my first activity this new 2013 is to release the January 2013 version of my notes.

You mention the saved query IBM.DEFAULTALLTASKSLIST_75
I dont think it exist in V800 or V801.
However, the federated business space widget Inbox can be customized to include most (or all) of these items. I find it especially nice, that this is the only place you can see the AtRisk time.

Thank you my friend. My work output has been called many things ... from drivel to poor to a meaningless ramble ... but "art" ... I like that .... that's a new one.

I was recently using instant messaging with a fellow programmer. He had developed some APIs and a library and I was using them in some of my projects. I had done a lot of work using his libraries and wanted to give him some positive feedback so I sent him a browser link so he could see my own code actually using his libraries.

My instant messaging friend is a native of China. His English is orders of magnititude better than my Chinese (which is zero). The conversation went:

      ----
Me: Have a look at this ... ive been using your libraries. Here is the URL ... http:<....>
      ... pause ...
Him: I looked at your work. Your work is amusing.
      Me: ?????!?!?!?!
      ----

It took me a few minutes to realize that what he had meant to say was "amazing". Instead I was hanging my head in sadness because I thought my coding skills were being called poor :-)

      Sometimes language can be fun.

Hi my friend. I had always assumed that previous versions of the book wouldn't have much (any?) value. There is only one source document and what I do is create a PDF from it on the 1st of each month and publish it. What would you be looking for in previous releases that may not be present in the latest version?

            Hi Folks,
The March 2013 edition is now available for download. Ive been on the road to exotic Peoria, Illinois for the last month and haven't had much of an opportunity for BPM study so not a heck of a lot has changed in the book this month. Ive also been spending a lot of time on a new pet project which is an alternative to the BPM 8.0.1 Coach Table. This can be found here:

            http://bpmwiki.blueworkslive.com/display/samples/GridX+Table

I am personally pleased with how that is coming.

Spring again in Texas. One of the best times of the year. Warm, blue skies and before the heat of summer.

Time again for another drop of the PDF which has now been uploaded. As always, hope you find something useful within. Did quite a bit of review and cleanup and am working the process of re-reading it myself (slowly). Finding all kinds of junk to prune and areas that have changed since I first noted not to mention some simply bogus thoughts, typos and grammar issues.

    Neil, amazing book, very useful!

Here's a suggestion regarding the different versions of BPM.

Perhaps you can simply take a 'snapshot' of the book every time a new version is released and make it available as a separate older download.

This way, people who work with older versions can download the version to their liking.

That's a good idea.  Actually all the old versions are still there.  They can be downloaded using:

      http://www.neilkolban.com/IBM/Kolban's%20IBPM%20Book%20-%20yyyy-mm.pdf

With a suitable replacement for yyyy and mm (4 digit year and 2 digit month).  Earliest version is 2011-12.  That and all later versions are available as needed.

      Neil

It was noted that this is a "technical solution" :-)   When I get some more time, I'll add a list of links to the older versions on the download page :-)

    Hi folks,

A few days late this month as I was attending the IBM BPM conference called "Impact 2013" in Las Vegas.  It was a great pleasure to meet so many of our BPM community members.  A great shot in the arm and energizer that shows IBM BPM is very much alive and well.

The May 2013 edition is now available.

    Hi chums,

Again late this month, been on vacation and a project for most of it so not much added for the June release.

June sees the release of the 8.5 version of the product.  As soon as I get my hands on it, I'll start to update the book as quickly as possible.  My policy is to try and be as "current" against the product as possible so when 8.5 ships, if there are changes that would not be applicable prior to 8.5, those may be lost in the book.  If you are going to stay prior to 8.5, you might want to keep a copy of the June edition just in case.

      Hi there,

No-one had better be charging for this book :-)   It is 100% free as is.  Simply go to the web page above and download the free PDF.  You probably don't want to read it from cover to cover but rather review the index and learn how to search the content within.  If you find any errors, post here.  If you need information added, post here and it "may" be done :-)   If you think indexing or cross referencing a section could be improved, post back.

Again, thanks for the kind words.  I like to do myself what I appreciate most from others.  As someone who works on technology, I live by the ability to Google for information and more often than not the answers come from great places like StackOverflow or forums or personal blogs or from developerWorks articles.  Years and Years ago, I used Wiki technology to record what I learned about a different IBM technology but I found that, although "good enough", it was a lot more cumbersome to use Wiki than my current weapon of choice - Apache Open Office.  My hope at that time was that others would also jump in and add their own nuggets of knowledge ... however despite five years of Wiki writing on the product, the number of updates by others was noise level.  So when I started working on the IBM BPM product, I thought "Wiki" or "PDF" and opted for PDF because it was simply the fastest and easiest for me.

Thankfully the number and quality of contributors to this forum continues to be great so the PDF as by no means the only place to trade knowledge.

My calendar has a repeating entry for the 1st day of each month to refresh the PDF on the web site.  However we are more or less in maintenance mode on many areas of the notes now.  Only when I come across whole new areas that I haven't had an opportunity to visit before does the "page count" increase.  More often than not there are stylistic changes, typo corrections or updates based on changes from one release to another.

Welcome to December.  Just two days after thanksgiving and am still stuffed.  Have a bad head cold and can't sleep so thought I'd get some of my chores done.

Here is the December release of the book.  You will find it continues to shrink as I move notes unrelated to BPM out of this book into other new books of notes.  I'm starting to study Worklight and Dojo in more depth and have 200+ pages on that topic (as yet unreleased).

I am also starting to consider the relative merits of this forum vs "StackOverflow".  See:

    http://stackoverflow.com/search?tab=newest&q=ibm%20bpm

IBM seems to be leveraging StackOverflow for suggested Q&A on a variety of products and I wonder if this isn't a "better" model for forum Q&A.  Don't get me wrong, I like the developerWorks forums especially since they moved to IBM Connections, but the "gameification" of forum Q&A is ... well ... fun :-)

I'm going to continue to watch this forum but will also now be watching StackOverflow since I have to watch that for other products now as well.  I'm watching for tags [bpm].

    http://www.neilkolban.com/IBM

As always, hope you find something useful in the notes.  I find that I have goofed on my vacation schedule and now have more vacation days remaining in 2013 than there are days so I plan to devote the remainder of the year to playing Battlefield 4 and "GO" and tinkering with some BPM projects that aren't part of my proper job.

        Hi Muni,

See the post in this thread from April 21st 2013 where a recipe was provided to get older versions.  However, to the best of my recollection, nothing was removed from the 8.0 to 8.5 release, only stuff "added".  Also remember, you get what you pay for in this book :-) ... it is primarily intended as my notes that I like to share with anyone who sees value.  When I am working on a BPM solution, I go back and re-read those notes and then start building out the solution area.  If I then realize that the notes could be improved, I go back and "polish them up".  What that means is that any area of the book may be changed at any time with (hopefully) better content.  So the bottom line is that you have a trade-off.  You could get an older version of the book prior to the 8.5 release and you will know that it will only cover functions and features found only in 8.0 or your could get the latest release which will include functions you can't use but may also include improvements to text on functional areas you can use.

Howdy chums.  March ... ahhh ... its getting warmer in Texas.  Nice.  Of course, being in Texas, I can't complain about harsh winters but not being able to run around in shorts and open shirts is "sucky" when you live here.  I grew up in a place where it rained all the time and the sky was always grey ... so the way I see it, ive had my lifetimes worth of rain and now like blue skies.  Looking out the window now, it is a bright blue with a current temp of 61oF and rising.  Forecast is for 80oF by the afternoon.

Here is the March release.  As always, hope there is something here for you.

        Haji,

Thank you SOOO much for posting that it was broken.  The Web Publishing tool I am using claims that it was uploaded.  I replaced the file in the publishing tool and said "publish" and again it said it was uploaded but it wasn't.  I FTP'd it to the web server by hand and it is now present and all should work.  I am at a loss to explain what happened but this seems to be the impetus that I need to convert the web server to WordPress.

Again, thank you.  If you hadn't posted back, who knows how long it would have been broken.

      Hi guys,

A nice chap from IBM contacted me and pointed out that I can't use the IBM Press book styling because these notes are not related to IBM Press.  I had assumed that IBM owned the "coloring and branding" of the IBM Press books but I no longer think that is true.  In addition, I shouldn't use the IBM corporate logo without IBM's express approval.

Again, in all honesty, the chap that contacted me couldn't have been nicer so I am happy to comply without question.

Until I can think up a new "look" for how I want these notes to appear, they are going to be wrapped in simple brown paper.  That way you can read the materials without arousing questioning looks from others.

Other than the cover and link images changing, it should be business as usual.

      Enjoy!

      Neil

      Hello Neil,

I'm looking in to the IBPM 2014-04 edition of your book. On the page 1501 there is a link http://www.neilkolban.com/IBM/DataFiles/Process_and_Task_Data%20-%202012-07-24.twx

Your website claims that this page is not available (404).

      So,

      1. FYI :)

      2. Where could I get this Process App? Is there any advanced version of this Process App or continuation of this work?

      Thanks,

        http://www.neilkolban.com/DATAOLD/DataFiles/Process_and_Task_Data%20-%202012-07-24.twx

        I'll also fix the PDF

As for enhancement ... yes ... a big new story is coming ... something I call BPM Explorer.  Should be out in a few weeks.  A tease is shown in the screen shot attached.

Colour me intrigued. Is all that data pulled via the REST API?

If you can star/favourite instances that would be great. Also search/filter. Also, I'd love to be able to help you build that.

Thank you very much for this book, is very usefull.

I found a broken reference in the book, in page 64.

The IBPM Process Portal provides the primary end user interface for users to start process instances

    Hi Neil,

Thank you very much for this excellent resource! We've found it invaluable :)

I've got a question regarding "Working with REST and heritage process document attachments" on page 561 of the April 2014 version of the book if I may. You mention that to retrieve a document, a separate URL/REST request is available. We've found the list of documents attached to a process to get the document ids, but we've been unable to locate a REST request or url to retrieve a document, given it's id. It may be a case of us missing the proverbial wood for the trees! If you have a moment to give us a hint, it would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Pete

Oh Pete ... this sucks.  Ive been writing these notes for years now.  When I learn something new, I write it down and move on.  Once upon a time I must have been in this area, made my notes ... and moved on.   Since I now have 8.5.0 as my primary platform, I haven't looked at the heritage document technology since this time back in 2012 just before 8.0.0 shipped with the new CMIS interface.  I feel like Fermat in that I scribbled a clue that there was an answer but neglected to give it.  Unlike Fermat ... I'm still alive ... but it doesn't help ... I don't know the answer.

If I was to offer a "clue" ... it would be to bring up a Coach which opens a document using the heritage document control and launch that document.  See what URL it used to retrieve it ... see if it is "easy to understand" ... i.e. some constant with a document id on the end.  If it is, post that and maybe it will come back to us.  It is likely that's what I did.

          Hi Neil,

Resurrecting an old post here but I just wanted to give an update. After looking around as you suggested we decided that it probably was best to use an alternative document store. We were only planning to use it as a temporary holding location for files uploaded to coaches using a control we've created.

thanks again for the help and the book!

No release for May 2014.  Ive added nothing new.   IBM has now announced 8.5.5 at the Impact conference and at the end of June, when I get my hands on it, we should expect coverage of that area in the August drop.

Hello, Mr. Kolban. Do you know anything about the integration of IBM BPM and IBM Connections. In the information center has a section "Enabling IBM Connections integration for Process Portal" and there is written about adding IBM Connections server via Process Designer. I installed BPM 8.5 Advanced upgrading to 8.5.0.1, but I have no way to add IBM Connections server to the designer. I hope for your comments and thank you in advance.

    Howdy chums,

The July 2014 release is now available.  It has been a few months since the last release.  A big part of the reason is that I am slowing down in finding important new content to add and Ive also been nicely busy.  I don't want to add "stuff" just for the sake of adding "stuff".  In fact, large chunks are being removed.  For example, this release I have now removed the docs on calling IBM BPM SPI through its old Web Service interface as everyone should now be using the REST interface.  It is as likely as not that the page count will decrease as increase.

Ive started the work on 8.5.5 coverage but there is lots to cover there ... so that will dribble in as it can.

    Url for access is:

    http://www.neilkolban.com/ibm

Hope there is something here for you.

      Howdy,

The earliest version I have was back in December 2010.  It was just over 200 pages.  My thinking has always been that the book will just "grow" until and unless there are concepts remaining where "I believe" that there will be no interest in that area any more.  I tend to find that the vast majority of a release is backward compatible with the previous release.  As such, I hope that much of what you find in the current release is still "pretty much" applicable to prior releases too.

However ... to be specific to your question.  Unfortunately no ... I don't keep the old versions of the PDF on my website.  By and large I "house clean" once a year and prune off old files that are no longer linked.

        Neil,

It's a shame you don't have a 7.5.1 version still available. Process Portal changed so much in v8 that a pre8.0 book would still be very usefull reference - so many customers are still on 7.5.

          Howdy Mark,

Most of the time the book just grows and grows and I rarely delete things before their time.  It is extremely likely that if there is little on the 7.5.1 portal then it is because I never got around to writing it.  What that would mean is that if their were back-level versions of the book, chances are high that you would be dissapointed with the lack of content.

Is there interest in a "mobile" platform version of this PDF?  I recently started using the Kindle app for my Android table and am quite liking it.  I created a Kindle content version of this PDF and it panned out to be 120 Mbytes in size (yikes!).   I don't yet know if there is demand for such and am not sure if my GoDaddy web hosting could handle the bandwidth.  Before I go down this route, I thought I'd check to see if there was demand.  If yes, I'll get the work started.

Is a Kindle format acceptable or is there a more desirous format?

        Hi Raj,

I'm on the road right now and don't have a copy of the book to look at to know what I said exactly (maybe nothing) ... but the story is that the Case Management features are ONLY available with IBM BPM 8.5.5 Advanced with Basic Case Management feature installed.

See the following for more details:

        http://www-01.ibm.com/common/ssi/ShowDoc.wss?docURL=/common/ssi/rep_ca/1/897/ENUS214-141/index.html&lang=en&request_locale=en

From an official stand-point, the announcement letter above is the full response.

In summary though, you don't get the case management features if you ONLY have IBM BPM Standard.

I'd like to check this code:

Where can I get the toolkit for this? In KolbanTK, I can't see any java script code for kolban.debug.

            Hi Andrew,

Sometimes time catches up with me.  Ive been tinkering with this collection of notes for so long and it has grown so large that I seldom remember what is in there myself.  What I have now done is removed that whole section on the "Kolban JavaScript Toolkit".  That was an effort I think I undertook 3 years ago that went nowhere.  It apparently even predated my aggregation of "bits" into a single toolkit.  The bottom line is that I don't have any code to share and have solved the problem for the future by removing its reference from the PDF.  I realize that is cheesy ... but ... tis what it is.

    Dear Neil,

I am creating a POC for a customer using IBM BPM 855 Basic case manager. I read two use cases on IBM BPM 855 knowledge center -

    http://www-01.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSFPJS_8.5.5/com.ibm.wbpm.wle.editor.doc/topics/ccasescenautoins.html?lang=en

I want to opt any one to create a working demo for customer. Do you have any lab or link which can help me in creating this POC. I cannot find any hands on lab on this myself. I read the section in your book and knowledgecenter which helped great deal in understanding the concept. But it is little less when it comes to creating a working demo given we are using web based PD here.

Really appreciate if you can guide me here.

    Thanks

      Howdy Raj,

This thread is really geared to "meta" discussions on the BPM book/notes that I take.  I'd suggest that if you have general questions on IBM BPM that you post/start a whole new thread.  No-one will read this thread unless they are interested in meta discussion on the book itself.

I almost get the notion that you may be an IBM employee?  If you are, I'd suggest that you use this IBM internal forum:

      https://w3-connections.ibm.com/forums/html/forum?id=b5fc20b4-845f-41b7-be1a-0baad2429cc2

(for those who aren't IBMers, don't worry about missing out ... that forum is very much like this one but caters only to IBMers and their experiences either building solutions for customers (IBM service staff) or experiences selling IBM BPM (IBM sales staff) ... think of it as an IBM Center of Competence community for IBM employees who want to chat about BPM internally.  I suspect your own company might have such internal forums).

      Howdy,

Back in July there was a similar question.  Unfortunately, I don't maintain previous releases and the book just keeps growing and growing.  There is actually very little I remove from one release to another.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I will tell you why I asked the old version book. In the book "Kolbans-IBPM-Book-2014-07", topic "Using Variables"(page 297) trying to use the below code and understand the concept. But method not available in the old version. that is my problem.

        var y = tw.system.fromXml(temp);

        error is:

        Unknown variable or function.

What function can be used instead of the above in old version?

          Hi Johnson,

The function fromXml is also found in the serializer. So the correct call would be

          var y = tw.system.serializer.fromXml(temp);

Seems like this could be a typo. It is still there in the September 2014 version (page 294)

    Greetings Sir,

First of all, thank you kindly for your continuous work on this book. It is one of the best resources for IBM BPM one could wish for.
However, in the last version (September), on page 268 about Alerts, it might be of use to note that in IBM BPM 8.x (tested in 8.5.5) this feature does not produce an error, however it will not show up in the portal, because the function has been deprecated.

    With regards,

    Danny

    Howdy folks,

I continue to tinker with the materials and have released the December 2014 edition.  Mostly polish and cleanup but hopefully still of value to us all.

      Dear Kolban,

Thanks for your support for BPM.

I have one issue in TWSearch.

TWSearch for process Id - When there is no TASK in process flow

I want to fetch process instance id, Name using TWSearch when process is under diarisation(Timer event delay).

We can read process information when we have Task in process, But I couldn't fetch process information using TWSearchColumn & TWSearchCondition api's when there is no task.

Can you please help me ?

Hi Kolban, the book is really interesting and helpful. I wanted to know if a Business Process Manager trial is available for training purpose. Thanks a lot
