Pinned topic IBM x3650 M2 & Windows 2008 R2 installation issue.

‏2010-04-06T08:16:06Z |
Hello everyone,

I’m going slightly mad trying to install Windows 2008 Enterprise R2 into “my” new IBM x3650 M2 (7947-96G). It came with the M5015 SAS controller.

If I launch the IBM ServerGuide 8.21 CD, at the end of the process, when the system asks for the Windows DVD, after having put it into the DVD bay, it comes up the error “D:\Sources\Setup.exe is not a valid Win32 application” and I have to shut down the server.
If I try to install Windows without the ServerGuide, instead, the installation process starts fine, but then, when the system asks for the RAID controller drivers, I get stuck.
I had a chat with an IBM support member here in Italy, he drove me first to the IBM ToolsCenter Bootable Media Creator v2.0 for Microsoft Windows (which I did succesfully) and then to the SAS Controller drivers’ page (http://www-947.ibm.com/systems/support/supportsite.wss/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-5082161&brandind=5000008).
I extracted the drivers into a USB pendrive and attached to the server. But the system doesn’t like none of the 3 files to choose from.
Searching for info on the net, I've discovered that the most recent release of the IBM ServerGuide is the 8.22, so I've burned a new cd with this image. But nothing has changed and I cannot install the server.

What I’m doing wrong?

Thank you for your help.
Fabrizio.

    Hi,
I Have done exactly the same installation yesterday here is what you need to do first:
Boot the server into the BIOS {F1} on startup menu:
Go to system setting on the integrating device {uefi } press enter key then go to the lSI controller delete oll the default group that t you have {clear configuration }then exit this menu & exit from the BIOS boot the server with the ServerGuide CD {use the 8.22 Version } choose the OS that you want to install then configure the RAID Adapter with the Raid Level that you want to use & Follow the interaction to continue the installation this should work for you .
    Good Luck

Thank you both for your reply!

I've tried the Meir's way: I have broken the Raid-1 previously created, and gone with the ServerGuide 8.22 CD. No problem at all, until the system asks the Windows 2008 R2 DVD. It says "DVD found", but at the very beginning of the installation the same error comes up: "D:\Sources\Setup.exe is not a valid Win32 application."

I'm collecting the info with the DSA now. I'll post them as soon as the system finishes...

    Alexander,

    the readme file says:
"IBM ServerGuide Setup and Installation Native uEFI 64 bit can only be used
on uEFI systems and supports Windows Server 2008 64 bit or Windows Server
    2008 R2 operating systems."

I guess my server is based on a uEFI system, so...
    ...Anyway, what do you suggest?
Shall I use this "ibm_utl_sguide_8.22_anyos_32-64.iso" CD or a lower version of the ServerGuide?

Thank you again, we are probably near to the end of the tunnel! :)

    Fabrizio,

yes, Win2008R2 supported for this uEFI ServerGuide CD, but your server no. You can read it in the same readme file.

    You need "ibm_utl_sguide_8.22_anyos_32-64.iso".

    Alexander,

thank you for what you are doing for me!
Unfortunately, the "ibm_utl_sguide_8.22_anyos_32-64.iso" CD didn't work either! :(

The same errors, both with the ServerGuide installation and with the OS DVD installation...

    Any suggestion?

    Hello,

I've come across this thread which sounds exactly like the issue I am seeing currently on my x3550 M3.

I have attempted to use both the ibm_utl_sguide_8.41_anyos_x86-64.iso, ibm_utl_sguide_8.41_anyos_i386.iso installers trying to install Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard Edition. The CD image is direct from Microsoft (SW_DVD5_Windows_Svr_DC_EE_SE_Web_2008R2_64-bit_English_X15-59754.iso). "D:\sources\setup.exe is not a valid Win32 application" ... Didn't I start the x64 version of Server Guide?

I've attached a screen capture of the IBM System Guide 8.41 x64 utility along with the error message on the screen which I am seeing. I am pulling my hair out at this point trying to figure out what the problem is.

I see the last update to this message was on October 31st, has there been any resolution to this?

    Thank you.
Hi RusselM, I've given up hope on trying to install windows 2008 and my dateline was too close to try to figure out. I've installed 2003 with no problems at all hence, sticking to 2003 for now.

I'll be glad to hear solutions too if anyone has one.

    Hello,

We've finally found the problem it was one of those need to be there moments. We were using the image: SW_DVD5_Windows_Svr_DC_EE_SE_Web_2008R2_64-bit_English_X15-59754.iso and downloaded it several times so we were quite sure the file downloaded completely, which it wasn't.

The download caching server we were downloading from/or our proxies were stopping this download at almost exactly 2.5G where this file is actually 2.9G.

    2,682,257,408 SW_DVD5_Windows_Svr_DC_EE_SE_Web_2008R2_64-bit_English_X15-59754.ISO MD5: 8849a131501e02039fe2ee223f17950b (bad copy)
    2,996,799,488 SW_DVD5_Windows_Svr_DC_EE_SE_Web_2008R2_64-bit_English_X15-59754.ISO MD5: 0207ef392c60efdda92071b0559ca0f9 (working copy)

I'm still not exactly sure why the downloads were ending abruptly - but after downloading this image on my home connection and realizing the filesizes were greatly different we tried it with success.

Hope this helps you. We were also using ServerGuide 8.41 for this installation purpose.

    Thanks

    Hi,

Take an image of svr2k8 and download controller driver & integrate the driver with n-lite tool to the o/s image. burn the image to cd and boot from it.
    good luck
