Hi,
I'm trying to use a virtual machine engine on my IntelliStation machine.
For that I have to enable virtualization technology. I checked, and the machine's processors (Xeon) suppose to support VT.
However, I cannot find the place in the machine's BIOS where I can enable that feature in.
Can anyone help directing me to the right place for doing that?
Am I missing something (like BIOS update or something else)?
Some more details: the model number is IntelliStation Z Pro 9232-LMG
Thanks!
Alon

Can I please get a formal IBM answer on that, before I mark that thread as "answered"?

Same issue here. Processor provides feature, but linux kernel log says something like: "virtualization disabled by bios".
Why don't you make a switch for enabling VT in BIOS? As everybody speaks about virtualization and zpro has the capability and will/must be used minimum the next 2 years for most customers (leasing), not having the chance of enabling it is a big disadvantage for users that need VT.
You praise the virtualization capability of the CPU in the specs and product information of the zpro. I now want to use it.
I would like to make it a wishlist item for the next BIOS release. I'd also use beta or "special" BIOS version only provided for testing from IBM.
Cheers

FWIW to those who desire VT to be enabled on their Z Pros, I have contacted the CEO of IBM with my frustrations. Surprisingly (to me), I received a call from his office on the matter, and the problem has been highlighted and is being addressed by the "Team Lead, Client Satisfaction and Loyalty Project Office" of IBM Global Technical Support. Their technical crew works from Taiwan on this issue, and so there will be back-and-forth delays, but I have been told, by phone and email, on a daily basis since my correspondence, that the situation is being looked at as an "executive complaint". I will let people here know what resolution is decided on - we all hope of course it is a fully usable VT capability for our Xeon chipped systems.- thrill

It was about a year ago that I posted that I had contacted the CEO of IBM to ask for assistance with this. I initially thought he had initiated an effort to solve this, and I did get a phone call from an assistant, and a followup email from an engineer who said he would look into it. A few weeks later he emailed me to say they did not intend to enable the VT bit, and that he was closing the ticket. I followed up with him that I did not understand why it was disabled, and that if someone could give some even unofficial direction that people would try to generate a workaround, however he declined to provide any direction and considered the case closed. I must say I was fairly disappointed, especially after the initial proactive response from the CEO's office.- ScottHasler

Hi! I've luckily unlocked and enabled VT.
First of all, my z pro 9228 BIOS is V1.45. Other BIOS versions can be different, I'm not sure.
I prepared the DOS bootable usb memory key, and copied `symcmos.exe` into the root directory.
If your Internal Floppy Disk is reliable, you can use a DOS boot floppy disk with `symcmos.exe`.
Symcmos.exe is a DOS program to read/write the BIOS settings. Boot from usb key, at the DOS command line prompt, type:
symcmos -v2 -L
This command will read the BIOS settings and save them, in the same folder where command is executed, with the name LITERAL.TXT.
Next, we modify one `token value` in the LITERAL.TXT. (We can make a backup copy of this text file before modification.)
Open the bootable medium that contains DOS and the symcmos. Locate and open file LITERAL.TXT.
It may be like this:
CRC = 25D9
(0000) 0000
(0009) 0000
(000C) 0000
---- ----
The first column is (token index) and the second column is token value. Both columns are hexadecimal numeric representation.
We modify:
(0009) 0000 ---> (0009) 0001
At the token index (0009), modify the token value from 0000 to 0001. The CRC is same value (=25D9 no change after modification).
And save the modified text file. Again, boot from usb key DOS. To write the new settings of BIOS, enter:
symcmos -v2 -uLITERAL.TXT
When finished writing, the system must be powerd off (not `Ctrl+Alt+Del` reset).
Then restart the z pro. We can check the VT function with `VirtualChecker`.
Finally, BIOS update or rewrite is a very dangerous procedure. Please pay full attention and don't forget it is at your own risk.
Good luck! -
