Pinned topic CPU upgrade for x3650, 7979-K3G

‏2010-07-27T12:56:12Z |
Hi,

I am experiencing some trouble upgrading from the standard 2GHz CPU in the 7979-K3G to a new 2GHz Quad Core CPU. New CPU is IBM Option P/N: 44R5630 - officially supported by the x3650 7979 - I looked it up in the ServerProven matrix.

It installs in the slot fine, however nothing happens when powering on the system. No POST and no errors indicated, just the fans spinning and drives light up - monitor is blank.

System is running latest BIOS firmware, 1.16.

Any help is appreciated.

    Hello,

did you have updated the BMC Firmware to the last version too?

    Hi,

The BCM is v1.39. I can see v1.49 is available, however not as a bootable CD - what would be the "correct" way to upgrade this without an OS installed on the system. And does the BCM affect CPU compatibility?

    Thanks for helping out,

    Casper

    Dear Casper,

    read the doc:

Processor support - IBM System x3650
    http://www-947.ibm.com/systems/support/supportsite.wss/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-5076450&brandind=5000008

    > what would be the "correct" way to upgrade this without an OS installed on the system

you can use BoMC for creating any bootable media with updates:

    Bootable Media Creator
    http://www-947.ibm.com/systems/support/supportsite.wss/docdisplay?lndocid=TOOL-BOMC&brandind=5000008

    Hi Alexander,

    > read the doc:

Thanks, I have read that, but I'm not sure what to make of it. I went by the ServerProven Processor Upgrade matrix at

    http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/info/x86servers/serverproven/compat/us/xseries/upgrades/procmatrix4.html

    > you can use BoMC for creating any bootable media with updates:

Thanks, I did not know of that tool. The system is now fully updated and still won't detect the new CPU. I guess this means that FRU, or P/N, 44R5630 is NOT supported in the X3650 7979-K3G.

    Thanks.

    Casper,

    > but I'm not sure what to make of it.

as we see you tried new CPU Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5405 2.0 GHz/1333 MHz (12 MB L2 cache). In short it is CPU 5400 Series.

In provided doc we can see that CPU 5400 Series supported for two x3650 system boards:

FRU 44W3324 (current, can sub for FRU 44W3328)
    FRU 44E5081

Check FRU p/n on your system board.

    Hi,

Am looking at this post because I am having the same issue... But I am REALLY confused...

I too have a E5405 I wish to upgrade a server with, but according to the sheet and the only part number to FRU number translation I can find my motherboard is also not incompatible.

PN: 43W0331 (43W8250 is the only FRU I have seen associated with this PN so I am assuming that is the FRU).

What is REALLY confusing is that that sheet says 43W0331 is only compatible up to the 53XX series processors... BUT I PURCHASED A SERVER WITH A DUAL E5405 CONFIGURATION WHICH HAS BEEN WORKING FOR QUITE SOME TIME WHOES MOTHERBOARD NUMBER IS ALSO 43W0331!

How can this be given that compatability sheet?

    Sure,

But I am an application developer first and an "administrator" second. Could you point me in the direction of how to get you that log with perhaps an online howto?

I will get it to you for the serer I have with the working E5405s and for the ones which support only 5300 series processors.

Just an FYI, I also downloaded an update CD and updated all firmware for the 5300 supporting servers, a little afraid to do it for my server which supports the e5405s right now though.

    Thanks,
    James

    Hi James,

use DSA Portable Edition and post resulted file *.xml.gz.

    Old CPU: Intel Xeon E5335

    New CPU: Intel Xeon X5470

I updated  BMC Firmware and  bios firmware to the latest version.

When I power on the server the fans keeps loud and nothing appear on the screen.
