Pinned topic VMControl will not install into SDMC

‏2011-08-05T17:18:35Z |
In the plugins tab on the Home page, VMControl is listed under the additional plugins to activate.
Does this mean it is installed and not activated? How can I tell if it is installed.
How can I get a license for internal IBM use?

There is NO support for installation of additional plug-ins on SDMC today, period.

I understand that the Welcome page has it listed, but that's a base Systems Director/Common Systems Director Appliance code fragment (on which SDMC is built).

The VMControl Express Edition equivalent function is there in the regular SDMC screens (create, modify, relocate and remove LPARs).

If you want more advanced VMControl functionality, you'll have to install a standalone Systems Director+VMControl server and connect it through an HMC to the Power System. We do NOT support the discovery of a SDMC from a standalone Systems Director server today.

Can you please provide more documentation explaining this?

Even I had these questions -
      1. How do I figure out if my SDMC has VMControl installed or not ?I have SDMC express edition
      2. How do I get VMControl Server and the procedure to use it.

        1. The SDMC does not have VMControl installed.
It does not support the installation of any plug-ins.
        VMControl is a plug-in.
The SDMC code has VMControl Express Edition equivalent function (i.e. Virtual Server lifecycle management: create, modify, delete, relocate LPARs)

        2. There is no procedure for getting VMControl installed on the SDMC.
        See #1.

If you want to use more advanced VMControl function, you need to use a standalone Systems Director server.

SDMC doesn't have VMControl installed. The 'Activate' is just a feature that wasn't removed in the first release of SDMC, but will be in future releases.

VNControl doesn't work against the first release of SDMC.

            > how do I get VMControl and its REST API's ?

You need to install a standalone Systems Director Server
            (http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/software/director/downloads/mgmtservers.html)

and you need to install the VMControl plug-in on that standalone Systems Director Server
            (http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/software/director/downloads/plugins.html)

This avenue is not for discussing futures outside of official Statement of Directions.

To make VMControl on that standalone Systems Director Server useful with Power Servers, you will be required to have an HMC- or an IVM-managed Power Server. Today, standalone Systems Director Servers do not support managing the Power Servers through a SDMC. With that in mind, there was an official Statement of Direction in the SDMC ALET:
"IBM intends to enhance the interoperability of Systems Director Management Console with IBM Systems Director management servers."

I tried downloading the trial copy of VMControl 2.3.1 Enterprise edition. However it turned out that the zip/tar contains Express Edition. Is there any way we can get a trial copy of the VMC 2.3.1 enterprise edition?

              Thanks!

I do hope you're not trying to install VMControl on the SDMC.

The no-charge download, when installed on a standalone Systems Director Server, should be fully licensed for Express, and a 60-day trial for Standard/Enterprise.

If you wish to use Standard/Enterprise beyond the 60 days, you'll need to install a purchased key.
