Pinned topic Can't create a spot form a mksysb

‏2011-04-05T12:37:38Z |
I'm unable to create a spot from a mksysb.
The command i run :
nim -o define -t spot -a server=master -a location=/tmp_install/spot -a source=mksysb_toto spot_toto

The error i get :
0042-001 nim: processing error encountered on "master":
0042-103 m_mkspot: unable to restore from mksysb_toto

/tmp_install/spot/spot_toto is created and full of files.
The creation seems to fail when creating files in the /tftpboot directory.

I could not find any error on the NIM server.
The NIM server is running AIX 6.1 TL6 SP4.
The mksysb are from clients that run AIX 6.1 TL4 SP3 or AIX 5.3 TL11 SP3.
Surprisingly, it works with a mksysb from a VIO 2.1.2.13-FP-22.1 SP-02.

I can't find how to obtain a verbose output. Is it possible ?
Does anyone know how to solve this problem ?

Had the same problem recently too. You may have a corrupt mksysb. To find out, do this:

    restore -Tvqf mksysb_toto > /dev/null

if any error comes up, the mksysb is corrupt. You can still use it to restore a system, you just can't create a spot from it.

IBM support suggested adding the "-p" option when you create the mksysb. For some reason, it's supposed to help reduce the chances of corruption.

I restored the entire mksysb with the restore command without any problem.

I'll try the "-p" option and i'll try to create a new spot with a this new mksysb.

The "-p" option didn't solve the problem. I still have the error.

    Any other idea ?

never had this problem, but there's a thread in dw forums which suggests creating the mksysb with the -i option

Already tried this one, but it didn't help. Thanks for the ideas.

Were you able to resolve this issue? I encountered the same problem after upgrading my NIM server to 6100-06 from 6100-03.

Okay nevermind. I just found out this error occurs also if you do not have enough space on your SPOT directory.

I have had a similar problem, and it seems that the root is that /tftpboot does not exist on the server from which the mksysb was taken. I can create a spot from all mksysbs except for those that do not contain ./tftpboot

Is there any way to add this file into the mksysb? Unfortunately I do not have the option of taking a new mksysb, because I am trying to recover a dead system.

The space issue solved my problem.  It would be nice if the software could simply report that problem instead of something generic and useless!

    Thanks for this information!
