IBM calls it "Kernel Extensions and Device Support Programming Concepts".
That said, do you just want to play around with device drivers or do you actually want to get a working firewall?
Not 100% sure about AIX5.3, but AIX6.1 for sure have IPFilter as an optional install which gives you all kinds of firewall options.

I've take a look of IPFilter, Just like IPFilter on HP-UX and Solaris, it implement a STREAM driver called pfil.
I need to implement a STREAM driver which has pfil's ability to hook income and outgoing packet.
