Pinned topic TCR Newbie

‏2010-11-24T19:09:42Z |
I am new to the TCR/Cognos/Tivoli environment so please bare with me as I try to explain my issue.
All I want to do is to setup a data model and have it available in the TIP GUI.
I didn’t install TCR on the server nor Cognos so I am not sure that it ever worked correctly, but uninstalling is not an option at the moment. Here is what I see through the Program Files (windows server). There has obviously been multiple installations of Cognos/TCR.
Under Programs:
Tivoli Common Reporting -> IBM Cognos Configuration (and some others)
Tivoli Common Reporting 2.1 -> IBM Cognos Configuration (and some others)
IBM Cognos 8 -> IBM Cognos Configuration & Frameworks Manager (and some others)
If I open up Cognos Configuration Manager under Tivoli Common Reporting (CCM v8.4) or under Tivoli Common Reporting 2.1 (CCM v8.4.1), I can right click local configuration -> test and everything tests successfully.

If I open Cognos Configuration Manager under IBM Cognos 8, what opens is a smaller configuration (in terms of the number of items included in the configuration) and if I run a test I get an error generating cryptographic information (error CAM-CRP-1193).

I'm trying to use framework manager and when I open it (its only installed/available in the IBM Cognos 8 menu) and try to create a project I get an error - Unable to access service at URL
http://X.X.X.X:16345/tarf/servletdispatch? ... check your gateway URI information and service is available.

I can’t help but think this is related to the failing test from the IBM Cognos Configuration under the same IBM Cognos 8 menu.

I don’t know if I need to point the Framework Manager to the other Cognos Configuration location (under TCR or TCR 2.1) or if that can even be done.

I’m under the impression I need to use Frameworks Manager to create data models. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can make this work?

I'm willing to use TCR or TCR 2.1 - at this point I don’t care - I've been trying everything I can think of for the better part of two days now.

Thanks.

    Joe,

You are having a configuration issue between the Cognos Framwork Manager and the Cognos Content store. Are you running TCR v2.1 beta or GA Code?

Does anyone have more info on this ? Please add your comments or correct any statements I made below

To use Cognos to create and run reports, you first need a Data Model.
In Cognos you can create Data Models using the Cognos Framework Manager. I don't think Tivoli Common reporting includes the Framework Manager. (I didn't see it on my system) So we can not create our own data models. We need to download and install a Report package. Each type of Tivoli agent may have its own report package. But not all agents have report packages yet. I am not exactly sure what the correct name for the "report package", I have also had trouble finding the report packages. I downloaded one for distributed OS agents using IBM passport Advantage. I found one for MQ on the IBM ISM web site. I found one for z\OS on ISM.
Also, how the report package is install varies by agent, need to read the instructions included in the download files.
The OS agent and MQ agent had a nice install script to run. The z\OS agent just had detail instructions.

For me to install and configure Tivoli Common Reporting with Cognos, I used the instructions in a White paper located on the TCR home website. To learn how to create Reports , I watch some instruction videos on youtube

Correction. TCR does come with Framework manager, you need to install it separately. (Supported only on Windows). The installer is located under CognosModeling folder.

So what can I do if I got tcr 1.3 installed on AIX and want to do data models for some reports that does not exist in the report catalog ??? I also read that on TCR 1.3 user guide:

"Make sure you have extracted and installed the Framework Manager component available from the installation media on the machine where you want to model reports."

Is there any way to create data models on Framework Manager and importing to an AIX where is running the TCR 1.3 ??

    thanks!!

    Hi,
    The general process:
Install/config Cognos Modeling on a Windows system. This is a Windows-based tool.
Setup a data source on this Windows system
Then you build the model in this tool, and the tool will push the model into your AIX TCR.

You can see the setup for this in a video here:
    https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/mydeveloperworks/wikis/home?lang=en#/wiki/W22ac5f3ebabf_4ff4_bd55_1a897c9a443e/page/Reporting%20Tips%20and%20Techniques

Yes, you need to install Framework manager to create data models. Please note that Framework manager can run only from Windows, but it can talk to TCR/Cognos running on AIX. So, once you installed Framework Manager on Windows, you should be able to develop custom data models to suit your needs.

i have already installed freamework manager but i can not connect when i select TDW i got this:

"QE-DEF-0368 Unable to decrypt user name and password credentials from the content store. Review and save the Cognos Configuration settings to configure your reporting environment."

i verified as this links says: https://www-304.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21370694

    and both got conectivity...

    Hi,
That's from your FM system's Cognos config, correct?
That usually happens when it's not configured with the right URL's to point to TCR.

Take the URL you plugged in for the dispatcher URL and put it in your browser, you should get a prompt to login. If not it's the wrong URL.
Note the URL's are slightly different from 1.3 vs. 2.x:
    1.3: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/tivihelp/v3r1/topic/com.ibm.tivoli.tcr_cog.doc/ttcr_cog_configure_frameworkmgr.html
    2.1: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/tivihelp/v3r1/topic/com.ibm.tivoli.tcr.doc_211/ttcr_configure_frameworkmgr.html

Also when I've got that error once, I think (can't recall for sure) you may have to clean it up before getting a successful decrypt:
    http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/tivihelp/v3r1/topic/com.ibm.tivoli.tcr.doc_211/tstcr_credentials_from_contentstore.html
NOTE THAT IS ON THE FM SYSTEM, NOT THE TCR :-) First check the URL and try again though.

Also, ensure that Cognos FIPS fix is applied to the Framework Manager. It is located under the CognosModelingFix subdirectory.

i could get access to both:

gateway URI https://omnibus:16311/tarf/servlet/component although it says "There is a problem with this website's security certificate." and i click continue

    Dispatcher URI http://omnibus:16310/tarf/servlet/dispatch

it seems to be the problem is about cryptography, when i click save :

"The cryptographic information cannot be encrypted. Do you want to save the configuration in plain text?"

I set the JAVA_HOME to C:\Program Files\cognos\c8\bin\jre asa link says

    Any other suggestion?

    Hi,
Like Venkat says, did you install the /CognosModelingFix ?
It's needed for TCR 2.x. It moves the FM encryption t 128 bit, like TCR is out of the box (so they match).

I am experiencing the same issue. I installed tcr 211 within an existing TIP deployment on windows. I also deployed the framework manager. The settings for both URL/URI are the same using the Tivoli Common Reporting -> IBM Cognos Configuration and Tivoli Common Reporting 2.1 -> IBM Cognos Configuration.

I have installed the fix for the framework manager. When I try to save the configuration (fro the framework), I get ... The cryptographic information cannot be encrypted. Do you want to save the configuration in plain text?

When I try to test it (using the test tab), I get an error CAM-CRP-1132.

    How can I solve this

    Hi,
From the FM system, copy that URL into a browser on the same system. Be sure it can bring up the login page. Otherwise the URL is not correct. Be sure to match the ports correctly with the http/https usage. The default is http...16310 or https...16311

Let me know how you make out.

Was this resolved ? I have those symptoms, accompanied by these messages on the TCR server:

    Hi,
I'm guessing, based on the SSL message, you are using https URLs in the cognos config. Update them instead:
    1. from https to http
    2. from 16311 to 16310
