Pinned topic Controller on Win2k8 R2 - 64/32 bit

‏2010-04-19T12:02:33Z |
Hi,

Does anybody have experiences installing Cognos Controller on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Environment (Application Server/Server Components)?

Another doubt is about 32/64 bit support. On the documentation it is mentioned that the controller is now a True 32 bit application, enabling to run on 64 bit OS using 32 bit resources, and there is no significant performance advantage.
(architecture_and_server_sizing_for_cognos_controller85.pdf )

But the only thing I can see is a possible advantage on the memory limit.

Both "issues" are not listed on the supported environments, so it's vague if it'll work or not. Does anybody have experiences with it?

    Hi

Any idea when will SQL 2008 and Windows 7 be supported? There are currently a few prospects on this platform.

Paul, Yes you're right. According to the Supported Environments, there is no Support for 2008.
    http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=3450&uid=swg27017475

But if you're going to do a new Controller implementation, you should considerer Win2008, since Microsoft Windows 2003 (including R2) loses it's Mainstream Support on 7/13/2010.

    http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/search/default.aspx?sort=PN&alpha=windows+server+2003+R2&Filter=FilterNO

Another thing which it's not very clean for me is about the 64 bit compatibility, which seems to be not officially tested.

infowave, if you check on the supported environments link on my previous post you'll see that SQL 2008 is actually supported.

For Win7 (Client), unfortunatelly it's the same thing for Win2008 (Server). I hope IBM Cognos test and do the homologation soon.

Support for Windows Server 2008 is on the way but I am not at liberty to tell you when, we have not publicised that information.

You can run Controller on a 64bit server but it must be configured as a 32 bit server at this time.

In other words, if all yoou can procure is a 64bit server that is fine but you can not currently exploit it.

Paul, That's a pity. It would be nice to have an idea when it'll be available even a schedule would help with our plannings.
It could be something like the Fix Packs.
    http://www-01.ibm.com/software/data/cognos/support/fixpacks.html

So running Controller in a 64 Bit O.S. (Like Windows 2003 Server x64) using 32 bit RunTime Libraries is Ok?
Because it's not very clear if 64 bit environment is supported or not (Software Environments and on the first PDF of the initial post)

This lack of support raises another issue:

    • If I already have Cognos B.I. 8.4 (which is supported on 2008) and it's web portal installed on IIS 7 (also supported http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=3442&uid=swg27014110).

What happens if I install Controller 8.5 Application Server on Windows 2003 R2 x86/x64 environment and try to integrate both portals?

The integration would occur on the existing Portal which is IIS7, but it's not supported on Controller 8.5 (http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=3450&uid=swg27017475).

So in this case the web portals would be separated until 2008 homologation ???
