I want to change the FW level of my SAN switches. I have connected the SAN switches with IBM DS5300 Storage Server with 10 Exp5000 & all information send in my attachment file. However, I cannot reboot the switches/DS5300 server as there are in production environment.
The switches are the SAN (2498-B24) two of the switches are manufactured by IBM & alias by Brocade, & IBM DS5300 Storage + 10 Enclosures Exp5000 Storage.
Actually, I unable to connect the IBM DS5300 or SAN Switch (2498-B24) on 8 GB speed. I have bought these features. "The Brocade tool set includes Server Application Optimization, Adaptive Networking, Fabric Watch, ISL Trucking, Advanced Performance Monitoring, and Extended Fabric."
Kindly, Advice me why this option work and we connected our IBM DS5300 or SAN Switch (2498-B24) on 8 GB speed.

Re: Unable to connect the IBM DS5300 or SAN Switch (2498-B24) on 8 GB speed2010-03-25T09:30:25Z in response to SystemAdminFimrware updates on the B24 can be done without interruption to the hosts.
Brocade call this non-disruptive Hot Code Load (HCL). It means the switch does not do a reboot during firmware update.
As for the 8Gbps issue... please putty to the switch and create a 'supportshow' by issuing the supportshow command and saving the output as a session log and post it here.
Re: Unable to connect the IBM DS5300 or SAN Switch (2498-B24) on 8 GB speed2010-03-25T10:52:00Z in response to SystemAdminHi Anthony,
Can you find the “Supportshow” file in my attachment? Kindly, send me the step by step instruction of upgrading the Fabric OS v 6.3.x. And also guide me, which version is install/support my SAN SW (2498-B24).
Re: Unable to connect the IBM DS5300 or SAN Switch (2498-B24) on 8 GB speed2010-03-25T20:37:27Z in response to SystemAdminYour supportshow file is incomplete.
The supportshow generates output that is many 1000s of lines of text.
I suspect the screen buffer on your putty session is set to default, so all I got was the last 500 lines or so.
If you click on 'Window' in putty before opening the session, you need to change the Lines of scrollback to at least '20000'
If your file doesn't start with the 'supportshow' command, then its incomplete.
As for step-by-step instructions.... its time for you to do some reading.
1) Grab the release notes:
Check all the limitations in the section 'Firmware Upgrades and Downgrades'
2) Download the firmware:
Go to here:
And follow the link called "6.x firmware:
3) Install the firmware:
From the firmware link , use the link called "Fabric OS Product Manuals"
Download the Fabric OS Administrator's Guide from version 6.3
I cannot give you direct link as you need to go through the IBM front-end link in step 2.
In the Admin Guide read Chapter 9 "Installing Maintaining Firmware"
In all the Brocade documentation, the IBM B24 switch is a Silkworm 300.

Re: Unable to connect the IBM DS5300 or SAN Switch (2498-B24) on 8 GB speed2010-05-14T15:18:37Z in response to SystemAdminHello,
just solved this problem thx to japanese page. It was lucky i can read :-)
You must set using command portcfgfillword x 0 (x - port number)
(To check you can use:
0- Fillword set to IDLE (This is how it should be set.)
1- Fillword set to ARB
BTW i found it later described in the RETAIN H196488 Abstract: DS5000 SYSTEMS NOT WORKING WITH BROCADE ON 8 GBPS HOST PORTS
After I change this I got all green lights everythere on my FC switch and ds5300 too :-)
FC was unable to negotiate 8GBPS speed
Re: Unable to connect the IBM DS5300 or SAN Switch (2498-B24) on 8 GB speed2010-05-15T04:37:09Z in response to olekfromPolandHehe... I expect you mean this site: http://www.loveunix.net/thread-113780-1-1.html
Its nice how the web translates it for you #;-)
I see you work for IBM, so that explains how you can see the contents of the RETAIN tip (since RETAIN is IBM internal).
The client accessible space to see this information is via the release notes for 6.2.0e firmware found here:
In those release notes you will find this comment:
"We have found that some new 8Gb devices require the ARB (FF) /
ARB (FF) sequence to have successful link initialization. For this Brocade has developed an
implementation of ARB (FF) / ARB (FF) for initialization and fill words."
It then gives the instructions on the relevant command:
Configures the fill word for a single 8G FC port.
Description Use this command to configure the fill word of an 8G FC port. This command is not
applicable to non 8G FC port. This command disables and re-enables the port and the
port comes online with the new fill word setting. The configuration is stored in
nonvolatile memory and is persistent across switch reboots or power cycle."
Please read the release notes if you need more details....
