For Linux on Power (since you've asked the question here), both Linux and Power systems are ideally suited for the complexity of multi-tiered implementations, scaling up (larger SMP system images) and scaling out (multiple to many servers doing similar work).

As an educational institute, you might consider the SPEC.org group and get involved with the development, research, and deployment of a cross-industry benchmark.
