I am going to get my Msc. degree soon. I have some plans about applying Semantic Web in travel industry. Essentially what i am thinking of is a middleware system for entities involved in this industry. How do you see this idea? or other related to the subject.
I would like to know your thoughts on this. Any ideas? No matter how feasible the idea it is to implement, actually out of the box, future like ideas are welcomed :).

It seems that although travel and flights are often used as examples and use cases for Semantic Web technologies there have been relatively few practical implementations.
There is a Travel Ontology, though it looks to have been abandoned. The paper Resolving Terminological Heterogeneity In Ontologies (pdf) has some extensive examples to do with flight and cargo tracking, though that isn't the main focus of the paper. There's also a paper An ontology-based system for intelligent matching of travellers' needs for airline seats which I can't read, but the author's blog looks relevant. Finally Developing Dynamic Packaging Systems using Semantic Web Technologies (pdf) looks at using Semantic Web technologies "for the automated online configuration and assembling of packaged travel products for individual customers."
I hope that helps, please let us know how you get on.
