Pinned topic Installing SLES 11 on p655 with tftp fails (Image too large)

‏2009-06-12T10:15:59Z |
Hi,
we are running SLES 10 SP2 on our pseries p655 7039-651. It's a 8CPU machine with two hardware partitions. I'm trying to install SLES11 on the 1-CPU test partition via tftp/bootp. While this works with SLES 10, the installer image of SLES 11 is too large. The p655 transfers the first 12MB of the image, then fails with

ERROR: Large client image. But Not allowed to split!!!
FINAL File Size = 12566528 bytes.

The problem is exactly the one described in detail here: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=350214

Novell closed the bug as they say it's a firmware issue. Now I upgraded the firmware on our p655, but this doesn't change anything.

I followed all the instructions in http://ps-2.kev009.com:8081/rs6000-firmware/7039651F.html and installed the FW from linux on our 7CPU hardware partition running SLES 10 SP2 (with Service Authority assigned).
I installed 3J080425.img. It took 25 minutes and everything went like described in the document, showing 99FF and 99FD etc. Then the machine went back into LPAR state and the 7CPU partition rebooted and came up fine. I redid the test with the 1CPU partition (after resetting it), but the error still exists.

I'm just not sure if the FW went ok, because when I boot into SMS I see those first lines:
pSeries Firmware
Version RG080425_d79e22_regatta
SMS 1.3...

According to the documents it should say "Version 3J080425". Maybe sth. is wrong here?

Calling "lscfg -vp | grep -A 1 Platform" doesn't work, because there is not "Platform" or "Firmware" string anywherein the whole lscfg output.

How can I check if the FW update went fine?

Is there any other way to install SLES 11 from the network? I tried booting yaboot.ibm as described in the novell document, but again it fails when transferring the inst64 image.

cu,
Frank

hi, to check which firmware is permanent/temporary you can run lsmcode, if you have installed the power service tools provided by IBM

I do not have suse experiences, just aix and redhat
try to install following packages in exact the same order, as listed [these packages provide DLPAR fuctionality and the power
    http://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/set2/sas/f/lopdiags/suselinux/hmcmanaged/sles11.html

      Hi Walter,

thanks for you help, but unfortunately all I get with lsmcode are information about the attached disks, i.e. sth like
      0:1:15:0 sg3 !VSBPD1H.2547
      0:1:8:0 sg2 sdb !IC35L073UCDY10-0S28FE6VK1Z6C07N4S28F.S28F
      0:0:15:0 sg1 !VSBPD1H.2547
      0:0:8:0 sg0 sda !IC35L073UCDY10-0S28FE6VKUNPD07N4S28F.S28F

Nothing about the machine firmware level...

    Hi Frank,
This is (sadly) a known problem. OF is resident from 12Mb so the TFTP load can only get 12MB-16KB of data befoer it hits the region of memory occupied by OF. There is progress in allowing the kernel to be "split" but that's incomplete.

The issue is complicated on POWER4 by virtue of the fact that OF is not relocatable.

IIRC the SLES11 release/install notes document how to netboot SLES11 via yaboot to work around this problem. Try that and if it doesn't work let me knwo and we can look into your options.

    Tony.

      Hi Tony,

thanks for your answer! I tried the yaboot mechanism as described in http://www.novell.com/linux/releasenotes/x86_64/SUSE-SLES/11/, section 8.7., but it states already that it doesn't work for power4. So as far as I understand, there is no way for power4 machines...

We are currently using a SCSI CDROM for booting from the installation DVD. Not very nice, but I guess we have to live with that?
