Pinned topic Password Recovery IBM 2005 B16

‏2009-04-01T08:51:58Z |
I am having a hard time figuring out admin password for IBM 2005 B16 (Fabric OS v6.10 & Kernel 2.6.14.2)
The service personnel from IBM denied they do not know factory or root password for SAN Switch.
To my surprise, I have to submit my MT and SN to IBM to reset passwords and it's subjected to service charge.
This is truly a frastructed customer experience and felt like being conned. Customer should know all the passwords.
Now I am only left with the option to reset admin password using Boot PROM.

Is there anybody who know default password for root, factory or Boot PROM?
Your help is much appreciated

    I have tried

    • fabrianne
    • fibranne
    • fivranne
    • Serv4EMC
    • password
    • passw0rd

None of them work. That's what made me think I am being conned.
The service personnel even suggest the root and factory password are not known to their level.
I do not know why this is so much complicated. All one has to do to reset password is console in to switch, supply root user cerdentials and issue ** command and that's it.

Truth .... nothing but the truth. None of us change password.
Now I am having impression IBM Service guys changed root password of the switch and when I asked for it they replied me it's chargable service work.
This is total disappointment... Am logging a support call with IBM.

Alright............ since there's no other way round I go ahead with Password Recovery using Boot PROM
Here's the procedure credits go to whoever drafted Fabric OS password recovery note

    1. Connect console cable to your laptop and SAN Switch
    2. Open HyperTerm or Putty and connect to COM1 and restore Port Setting to default
    3. Power recycle the SAN Swithch switch off and switch on
    4. Press ESC when POST messages are displayed
    5. The Boot PROM Menu will be shown as below:

    1) Start System
    2) Recover Password
    3) Enter command shell

    6. Choose 3 and press enter to open command shell
    7. Type printenv
    8. Look for the line started with OSLoader http://e.g *OSLoader=MEM()0xF0000000;*MEM()0xF08000000
    9. Copy the text between = and ; which is MEM()0xF0000000
    10. Type boot MEM()0xF0000000
    11. Type mount -o remount,rw,noatime /
    12. Type mount /dev/hda2 /mnt
    13. Type /sbin/passwddefault
    14. You will be informed passwords are set to default
    15. Type reboot -f and switch will be rebooted
    16. Wait for Swith to be normally rebooted and log in as root. Default password in my case is fibranne
    17. You will be prompted to change password for root, factory and admin account and do so as prompted
    18. Document the password somewhere safe and disconnect console connection

    Hi,

We have an old switch installed by a supplier a while ago and that we wish to connect a new tape library we bought.
The problem is that no one knows about how the switch were configured.
I tried to connect through the console without any success.
Made the try with TIA RS-232 straight cable with DB9 connectors => I see nothing on the screen
COM port settings are as follow:
    •Baud: 9600 bps
    •Data bits: 8
    •Parity: None
    •Stop bits: 1
    •Flow control: None

I also connected it with an UTP crossover cable, put a 10.77.77.76/8 IP on my NIC then tried to ping the 10.77.77.77(which is the default as stated by IBM/Brocade) but got no echo replies.
I used wireshark to snif what's happening on the line but can only see packets generated from the computer not the switch.

    Could you please help?
Which serial cable/cabling is needed for that kind of switch?
is there any manner to reset the switch to its factory without access to CLI?
Is there another way I didn't try that can solve the issue?

    Thank you.
