Pinned topic DB2 Express-C for Mac OS X is now available for download !

‏2008-12-23T10:59:10Z |
Hello,

The first download of DB2 for Mac OS X is now available. You can go to the download page to download a free DB2 Express-C data server or a free DB2 Client for Mac OS X.

There is a documented included in the install image that you should read before you install and setup DB2 on your Mac OS X computer. For convenience, I'll attach a copy of that document here as well.

This is the first in a series of docs that we will be providing to help you use DB2 for Mac OS X. Coming up will be docs on how to get started with Application Development using DB2 for Mac OS X, as well as a document on how to get started with the DB2 Technology Explorer on Mac OS X.

Please continue to post any questions, problems, etc in this forum.

Hello, I was excited to hear about DB2 for macs.

However, I was unable to install either the server or the client on my mac mini (Intel).

I got a complaint about a "bad CPU type".

If you could shed some light on why I got this error and what I can do about it, I would really appreciate it.

    Thanks,

    Rodney

    I discovered the problem.

I have one of the older Mac Minis with an Intel Core Duo processor (I always assumed it was an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU).

The solution will be to replace it with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor with support for 64-bit computing.

    Hi Ryan,

I recently downloaded the server and went to install it on my Mac - graphical installation, standard user installation.

When I double clicked db2setup a dialog box opens and repeats several times:

    sh: otool: command not found

however the splash screen appeared. When chose install a product then hit the Install New button, then received an error dialog:

The user name specified is invalid.

Obviously at this point I haven't entered a user name, just clicked. I assume something is hardcoded somewhere which the installation program is complaining about.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers

    Hi,
Well I down loaded the 64 bit version and tried to install it on a vmware osx image.

    1) added a sysctl.conf file and inserted the recommended config lines (and rebooted the image)
    2). created a DB2 user instance db2inst1
    3) ran the gui setup for a root install.

After a few pages of "sh: otool: command not found" messages the setup GUI appeared.

Select install new product as root
    Select typical installation
Select only installation (no response file)
    default directory /opt/IBM/db2/V9.5
    Select Create db2 instance
    Enter userid created earlier

    db2setup log attached.

    Hello,

At this point, if you want to use DB2 on your Mac, you need otool, so you should go get the Mac Developer tools package. Without otool, we can't set/update the DB2 library dependencies, and that means a lot of things will break. I don't have a better solution that that right now.

    Bruno,

It is not quite the same, but I use SQLWorkbenchJ. It has a good command editor, and a database browser where you can do a lot of stuff. Combined with the command line processor it is enough for me. I know that Squirrel also works well on the Mac

    Hope this helps.

There is more information on other open source tools on this thread

Ah. That could be a problem. We were hoping to use DB2 as our preferred deployment database for our customers, but we are a little reluctant to trust their data to a beta release. The main reason for our choice of DB2 was the fact that it can run on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. If the Mac OS X port is not going to be updated to a production release then we will have to reconsider our choice of database.

    Thanks for your reply :)

I am having trouble running any of the scripts after untarring the db2 express-c for mac os x. I am running on a mini mac and have intel core 2 duo processor. Yet, I still keep getting "bad cpu type in executable". Anybody have any solutions. Mac OS X version 10.4.11. Any help would be great. Bafled.

The problem is your OS level: the DB2 beta requires Leopard (10.5).

    Hello,

Congratulations for this release of DB2 Express-C for OSX!

Currently, Java Stored Procedures are not implemented in this release.

We need to make a choice about the database server software and we need this feature.
Can you please tell us if it is planed to implement this feature soon? by when?

I've gotten a couple of errors near the end of the install. It appears to be pointing at your home directory for 2 different files.

I don't believe I have otool installed so I'll go get that from apple developer. I still think there's an issue below though. Let me know what you think.

    JDBC connection issue

    ‏2010-01-29T18:13:29Z
    Hi,
I just installed DB2 Express C 9.5.2 on OS-X 10.5.8. The install went fine, and I am able to connect over the CLP to my database.

netstat shows that db2 is listening on port 50001, and my os-x firewall is DISABLED.

When I try to connect via JDBC (a routine that works against other db2 9 servers), I get the below. I also get connection errors when trying to connect remotely from other DB2 administration clients.

com.ibm.db2.jcc.a.DisconnectException: A communication error has been detected. Communication protocol being used: Reply.fill(). Communication API being used: InputStream.read(). Re: JDBC connection issue

    ‏2010-01-29T18:22:32Z
    Hi,
I just installed DB2 Express C 9.5.2 on OS-X 10.5.8.

Re: DB2 Express-C for Mac OS X is now available for download !

I've gotten a couple of errors near the end of the install. It appears to be pointing at your home directory for 2 different files.

I don't believe I have otool installed so I'll go get that from apple developer. I still think there's an issue below though. Let me know what you think.
ERROR: DBI1055E The message file db2install.cat cannot be found.

Explanation: The message file required by this
script is missing from the system; it may have been
deleted or the database products may have been loaded
    incorrectly.

User Response: Verify that the product option containing
the message file is installed correctly. If there are
verification errors; reinstall the product option.

I'm getting this same error. Is there a work-around for it yet?

Nada, I don't think the IBM dev team monitors these threads. I've spent alot of time trying different driver versions etc.

It sucks because, if you develop on OS-X, (which a TON of people do), you always have to have some second machine sitting somewhere to host your db2 database. Augh!
