Pinned topic The Maven release plugin with ClearCase

‏2008-10-02T15:45:19Z |
I am investigating the use of Maven for build automation on a new project using ClearCase UCM. I get errors while simulating the cut of a release using the release plugin.

I have the release plugin recognizing that I am using UCM then prompting for the current version and next version. It creates the response properties file, checks out and backs-up the pom, and then fails. The same error occurs with a dynamic and snapshot view. I'm stuck

Here is the output of `mvn release:prepare` on a snapshot UCM view running on a Linux server and using Nexus as a repository.

Stupid question #1: does "cleartool co -nc
    /opt/viewstore/common/maven/my_lf_ss/vobs/test_alm/LF_Build/pom.xml" say
    anything?

My guess would be that there is no activity set in the view, but that's a
GUESS. Need an error message to know for sure... I don't think maven knows
about ucm activities (base don a brief read of the briefer doc at
    maven.apache.org)

An activity is set and my clearcase_settings.xml is configured to tell maven I am using UCM. That is working because the output is showing the VOB and stream name correctly.

The pom is being checked out, but is identical to the previous version, so it isn't being modified.

    Thanks for the response.

If the pom file is already checked out, the you will get an error. trying
to check out an already checked-out file will give you this error:
cleartool: Error: Element "{whatever}" is already checked out to
    view "{view name}".

So, if the operation is trying to check out the file, and gets this error
(which goes to stderr, and may not be caught by this plugin), the deploy
    fails.

That is, in fact, the error I get when I run it a second time without unco'ing the pom file. So it appears to me that maven is getting through the checkout fine but is not able to whatever the next step is. Having not run maven with a different SCM system, I'm not sure what that is.

Here is what the output looks like when it is run while the pom is checked out:

Re: cciug The Maven release plugin with ClearCase

That is, in fact, the error I get when I run it a second time without
unco'ing the pom file. So it appears to me that maven is getting through
the checkout fine but is not able to whatever the next step is. Having
not run maven with a different SCM system, I'm not sure what that is.

Here is what the output looks like when it is run while the pom is checked
    out:

    INFO Checking out file:
    /opt/viewstore/common/maven/my_lf_ss/vobs/test_alm/LF_Build/pom.xml

    INFO
    ERROR BUILD FAILURE

    INFO
INFO Unable to enable editing on the POM

    Provider message:

    The cleartool command failed.

    Command output:

    cleartool: Error: Element
    "/opt/viewstore/common/maven/my_lf_ss/vobs/test_alm/LF_Build/pom.xml" is
already checked out to view "my_lf_ss".

    Thank you,

No it does checkout the file. As I mentioned earlier "It creates the response properties file, checks out and backs-up the pom, and then fails"

I'm not sure what it is trying to do when it fails. I was hoping by posting on the ClearCase forum that someone who had used the plugin successfully would recognize the problem.

    Thanks for looking into it.
