Pinned topic ClearCase v7.1

‏2008-07-03T08:08:04Z |
This has been on the cards for a good while now and I heard about it back in Feb this year, but still no sign of an official release date yet, although I've heard that it's likely to be the end of September.

There seem to be a few things being discontinued - the HPUX 11 v1 OS is of concern to my current client:

If anyone has anymore relevant info on this release, please append to this thread for all to see.

Best Regards,

      Hey Graham,

      Came across the following today:

The 7.1 release is schedule for Q4 2008 and it offers significant improvements in the following categories: usability, deployment effort, extensibility, governance/compliance, total cost of ownership and scalability.

      Usability and Deployment Effort

CCRC UI (Tree filtering, pending changes view, version tree merge, CQ queries)
Eclipse-based CQ Schema Designer (schema version comparison)
      New CQ Import Tool

      Extensibility
      CQ Command-line-interface
      Common CM API

      Governance and Compliance
      CQ ALM Schema
      Reporting - data-pull model
      FIPS 140-2 compliance

Total Cost of Ownership and Scalability
      Common CM Server
      Global Monitoring
      IBM Installation Manager

Thanks Jozef. I've heard talk of a November date following this posting, so this seems to tally up.

The list does not mention a CCRC command line interface. Wasn't that originally planned for 7.1, or was it 8.0?

from what I saw at RSDC (if I remember it correctly) it is not in 7.1, but
definitely firm in the eyes of the powers to be. Penciling it in for 8.0 is
a good assumption, but then the numbering and everything may change ...

We have the latest Beta Release, and we also heart of Novembre.

But as a result of the tests with the software, well, I would say, a usable version might come next year.

Those subscribed to the CCIUG maillist got the original message, so this will be a duplicate. Kenneth Ölwing posted this on Nov 26 but a gateway problem prevented it from being added to the web. I am doing this now manually. I apologize for the troubles. Marc

It's funny in a way - while I know CCRC, the CM API and server, etc etc is the future, the one thing in this release that to me really feels like a 'woohoo, finally' is the Unicode support (new typemanagers).

According to the following IBM document of changes in v7.1; "Rational ClearCase 7.1 represents the richest release of the product since Rational ClearCase 4.0".

The Multisite admin console is certainly a sizeable new addition. Has anyone used this yet?

Anyone know the exact release day of the AIX version of CC 7.1

It was not released with the rest of the packages on Nov24 08. The documentation said that is would be released within 90 days. That is only a few weeks away.. I'm not impatient though..er well maybe just a little. It would be nice to start testing for upgrades this quarter...

all the documentation is available at https://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/cchelp/v7r1m0/index.jsp .
It also comes with the sw, but you have "chicken and egg" syndrome there.

That list looks like you downloaded it for every possible OS. I don't want to know how long that took. You need exactly one of these 1Gig+ files to install on win (and maybe one tiny one for docs).
I don't remember exactly what PA offers and can't go look right now. Go back into there and find the windows download and note the filename and that is the file you need. CCRC is part of the full download, and there is only one win download for all win versions.

              Martina,

Thanks very much. (The total download takes about 6 hrs.) I also want to make sure I have the process flow correct:

              Backup all ClearCase servers
download the uninstall package on each ClearCase server
run the exe for the uninstall app
unzip the Windows package on servers
              run the exe for ClearCase

where does the launch pad and install manager come into this process?

you are looking for my RSDC 2009 talk (that they have yet to confirm that I get to give) LOL.

before you run the uninstall on the license or registry server, make sure you save your license and registry data.

the short version is that you actually have to install Install Manager first. It is part of the package, but you can also download it separately.
If you have several servers and clients to install, you will want to create one or two response files. If you need to install another IBM-Rational tool on your servers/clients, you probably also want to download the Packaging Utility to create a deport (kinda what the release area used to be, just for all tools).

You can get IM and PU from http://www-01.ibm.com/software/awdtools/installmanager/support/download.html
you need to click on "view all download items" to see PU (as that page looks today)
Documentation for all this is at

                  Martina,

LOL. I'm glad I have the expert for this process, it's much different than the last to upgrades I did SR4 and SR5. I prefer to do this correctly the first time.

                  My environment has 2 servers:
server 1 - VOB, license and registery
server 2 - view and CCRC

                  Client machines:
approximately 75 -100 machines globally (with non-LAN users accessing via CCRC)

Do I need to install the Packaging utility for this? I will need 2 or 3 response files? one for each server and a NetInstall for LAN users Do I need to create an additional response file for the clients to install CCRC?

actually you will probably want to start with some sort of test environment. The webserver behind CCRC is brand spanking new and now webshere based and called CM Server. I would never install it in a live env, especially one this big, without familiarizing myself with things first.
A 7.1 client works with 7.0 view/vob server, so you can start testing that piece before doing any upgrades.
Have you closely read https://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/cchelp/v7r1m0/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.rational.clearcase.cc_ms_install.doc/topics/c_planning_upgrade.htm ?

The packaging utility lets you create a depot that down the road can also contain ifixes and fixpacks. For an environment this big I'd definitely have one.

It looks to me like you can install the servers manually or create response files. A response file gives you repeatability and your servers are unique installs. For all the clients you definitely want a response file to make sue they are all configured consistently.

                      Martina,

I'm thoroughly reviewing several times the content found at https://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/cchelp/v7r1m0/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.rational.clearcase.cc_ms_install.doc/topics/c_inst_planning_cc.htm so that I can perform the process on my sandbox environment.

In the Backing up your environment resources section I have a couple of questions:

1- there are a few files listed as priority for backup and then there is a note regarding the db file. Is that the client_list.db file or the license.db file it is referencing?
2- where in the ccase-home-dir do I find the license.db license database and the clearmake scripts?

Thank you for your on-going assistance.

                      Cheryl

are you talking about https://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/cchelp/v7r1m0/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.rational.clearcase.cc_ms_install.doc/topics/c_backup_procedures.htm ?

I have never heard of backing up client_list.db, but it can't hurt. Note that it is listed in the text at the beginning but not in the table at the bottom. Its basically a list of clients that the server knpws about and it is used for rgy_switchover amongst other things. If you loose it, it will get built up again.

license.db are your clearcase licenses (if you use atria licensing), so that one is really important.

                        ccase-home-dir is /var/adm/rational.
This is the first time I ever read about a clearmake directory in there and my 7.1 install doesn't have one. If you have one, back it up, if you don't, don't worry.

That page doesn't say anything about the shipping dir in there. If you use MultiSite, make sure you check it as well and back up if needed.

I found the client_list.db under Program Files\Rational\ClearCase\var (Windows installation), but am still unable to locate the license.db

It is stored in the registry on win. And it will probably get wiped when you uninstall the old CC version.

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/cchelp/v7r0m1/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.rational.clearcase.cc_admin.doc/topics/t_licadm_cc_add_license.htm says it in a roundabout way.

When you run the win install, there is a licensing page where you have to paste in the licensing info as you got it from Rational. If you don't have that, you can get it again from the licensing site (if you are set up for it). I hope you are.

So in essence, the license.db information is what is stored on the license server Control Panel >> ClearCase >> Licensing tab >> string, etc. on the host machine and the host ID info correct?

                                    Martina,

I've created a very high level activities list for my sandbox environment (2 servers) to be completed and documented this week:

Registry, license and VOB server activities

                                    1. Full backup of ClearCase server
                                    2. Download the Install Manager (IM) package on the server
                                    3. Run the exe for IM
                                    4. Download the uninstall package on each ClearCase server
                                    5. Run the exe for the uninstall app
                                    6. Unzip the Windows package on the server
                                    7. Run the exe for ClearCase v7.1
                                    8. Restore VOBs
                                    View and CCRC server activities

                                    1. Full backup of ClearCase server
                                    2. Download the Install Manager (IM) package on the server
                                    3. Run the exe for IM
                                    4. Download the uninstall package on each ClearCase server
                                    5. Run the exe for the uninstall app
                                    6. Unzip the Windows package on the server
                                    7. Run the exe for ClearCase v7.1
I'm not sure where to put the task for Migrating from Rational Web Platform to CM Server

Please let me know what other steps I may have missed or put in the wrong order.

Thanks very much for all your help to date, it's all starting to come together well.

                                      Cheryl,
The uninstall will not remove VOB or view data. Its a good idea to back them up, but you should not have to restore them.
What you do need to restore is the registry and license data
So item 8 for the VOB server should read: restore registry and license data.

I'd add an item 8 to the view/ccrc server:
                                      8. Configure CM Server

Please note the files listed for backup in https://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/cchelp/v7r1m0/topic/com.ibm.rational.clearcase.cc_ms_install.doc/topics/c_upgr_rwp.htm . Make sure you include them in that backup.

If you are tryly doing a full backup of the complete server (to tape), I'd still backup to my home dir or so the registry / license / config data that you know you will need to restore.

                                        Martina,

As you have been so extremely helpful with this process for me to this point, I would like to request your expert guidance and assistance once again. I will be happy to assist in off-line testing after this installation has been successfully completed, just as a thank you or feel free to use me as a sample of the "what not to do" (without my company or last name) smile.

I have not been able to successfully install ClearCase License Server and ClearCase v7.1 on my sandbox VOB/license/registry server, though I was following the high level outline from previous messages. I do have a PMR opened (74296 L6Q 000) regarding this issue. I have reviewed the documentation located at https://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/cchelp/v7r1m0/index.jsp, many times as thoroughly as possible prior to attempting the installation and I was able to download the 3 zip packages (ClearCase Windows 7.1, License Server, and CM Server for ClearCase Remote Client), complete the install of Installation Manager (IM) and uninstall v6.15 successfully. There, unfortunately is where my success ends. I cannot get the license server to recognize the license string I have, etc.

Just as a point of clarification, there are no additional funds, knowledgeable resources, nor time to make a success of this by using the hit or miss methodology or trained and/or experienced assistance. My deadline for successful project completion is May 4, 2009. Below is the message I have sent to the Technical Support Engineer assigned to the PMR:
"Unfortunately this method of reviewing documentation and trying the steps again and again are not productive. I need to have more focused, dedicated assistance to resolve the issues as they arise. I have been unable to successful install any of the appropriate products now for 3 days.

Should I open a different PMR for a walk through or will this PMR be appropriate?"

                                        Cheryl

                                          ouch.
If I read right, the blocking problem is that the license server does not recognize the license string.
Do you use flexlm licensing (aka IBM Rational Common Licensing) or Atria licensing (aka Rational ClearCase licensing)?
Is this a new license string or one that used to work with 06.15?
The License server you downloaded is a flexlm license server. If you try to feed it atria license strings, it will not be happy. If the string starts with "-license ClearCase" you have Atria licenses. Those go into "Control Panel -> ClearCase -> Licensing tab".

p.s. licenses get generated for a specific hostid. The current documentation only tells you how to find it for flexlm licensing. I had to look in the CC 6 docs for the recommended commands to find it for Atria licensing

                                            Windows:

                                            on the command line:

                                            * cd to the directory SETUP\program files\Rational\SETUP\hostid on the ClearCase CD-ROM
                                            * run hostid.exe

                                            I found hostid.exe in my 7.1 install in C:\Program Files\IBM\Rational\ClearCase\bin

Do you have access to the License Center for your company so you can regenerate your license key if needed?

Since this is a test or proof of concept box, why not just point to the old license server until you get the new keys generated? Or am I incorrect in that assumption, the upgrade is a production box and they are down?

If the latter is the case, make the PMR a "server down, users can't work" and they will generate a temporary license key on the phone good for a few weeks.

                                                John,

The suggestion is one I would normally agree with, based on managements aggressive project schedules and criticality, unfortunately there is no allowance for ANY down time due to upgrade "rehearsal" in the test environment.

Thank you for the suggestion and under a different timeline I would attempt it.

                                            Ouch indeed :(
Yes the license string worked without a glitch with 6.15.

I've uninstalled CCv7.1 and the v7.1 License Server for the 4th or 5th time now. Do I run the hostid.exe after installing only CCv7.1 or also installing the License Server?

Yes, as the sole ClearCase System Admin, I have access to all the orders for key return, etc. I'm not sure if this is important, our maintenance agreement is for Floating licenses and Flex licensing...

Also, was I supposed to unregister and untag the VOBs prior to the uninstall of v6.15? If these activities were not performed what will be the ending results to the VOBs and their respective metadata?

Btw - That's another one of the error messages (along with licensing issue)....I do not have the exact verbiage or a screen capture unfortunately.

Thanks again for your follow up.

I think you have definitely proven that uninstall / reinstall isn't going to fix it.
The grand plan now should be to get it installed and leave it installed and make it work.

The hostid.exe is used if you use Atria licenses. You say that you use flexlm. The instructions for finding the hostid for that are in https://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/cchelp/v7r1m0/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.rational.licensing.doc/topics/t_find_host_id_win.htm

If you use flexlm and are a big shop, I do have to ask why you run the license server and not have the CC licenses hosted on your companys flexlm server. An you should be able to get that ticket escalated by saying that the environment is down.

As to what to do to continue on your path: get LM installed again, if it currently isn't. have the license manager show you what it thinks the hostid is and regenerate the licenses in the Licensing center and get those licenses working.
If CC is still installed, leave it installed. It getting or not getting a license doesn't matter during install. If it isn't installed, muck with the License Manager first and then install CC

To upgrade CC version you need not untag/unregister the VOBs and VIEWs.
But, you should take a backup of <ccase-home-dir>/rgy dir as this will
be replaced with new files upon installation. Once the installation is
over you'll have to replace the rgy dir with the copy that you took

                                                Martina,

The current license strings I have for all my licenses are Atria licenses rather than flexlm.

When install the License Server, I select License server for IPv4 network, is this correct?

                                                Seth,

Thank you for the details regarding unregister and untag, this should be less work then I thought (well once the entire install works properly) ;-)

Just keep your Atria licenses and don't bother with flexlm and the License Manager if you are happy. If there is some push to convert to flexlm, then follow the conversion section in the manual.
I don't know what to say about IPv4 network. Most likely yes. What are the other options? Its been a long time since I installed the License Manager and I don't see anything in my settings or properties. I use it for CQ only.

The other option is IPv6 network which I did some research to determine IPv4 is the more likely to use.

Once the License Server bit is installed, I use which application for the Atria license string?

Atria licenses are NOT flexlm licenses that the License Manager installs.
You said that you were using flexlm.
As I already said, the instructions for using License manager to find the hostid are in https://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/cchelp/v7r1m0/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.rational.licensing.doc/topics/t_find_host_id_win.htm

Then return and regenerate the license string in the License key center http://www.ibm.com/software/rational/support/licensing/toIntraware.html

                                                        Hi

I am working on a critical project and I am responsible for getting a CM environment up and running. I need to install ClearCase 7.1 and Cm server on 3 SUN Sparc machines running Solaris 10. I tried to install ClearCase 7.1 on one of the servers which will be the license server, registry server and view server. I need to do the installation over VPN. I tried installing using launchpad which invokes Firefox browser on Solaris. The status bar goes more than 50% and the browser crashes. I believe the installation has gone past ClearCase full installation and CM server installation. I am not sure if the installs completed successfully.

I get this error when running the cleartool command - ld.so.1:cleartool:fatal: libatriaclient_meters.so:open failed:No such file or directory.

It gives this error when running clearlicense -l command: ld.so.1:clearlicense:fatal: libatriaxdr.so:open failed: No such file or directory.

Can someone please help me with this issue ? I guess I need to determine if the installation is bad. If so I need to uninstall ClearCase and re-install. Also, for my situation is it better to run IM in silent mode using response file ?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It doesn't work, so the install wasn't successful. I don't quite get what you mean when you say that you are doing the install over VPN. Do you mean that you are working over the WAN and redirected your display? Doing that will definitely add an unknown factor. I suggest that you uninstall via IM and then try a silent install, which will remove all the display stuff from the equation and be a much better option over a long distance.

                                                            Martina

Thanks for your quick response. I am required to install on SUN servers that are located remotely. I will first try to uninstall using IM and then install silently.

To first uninstall using IBMIM I created a response file. Do I need to run the IM as
                                                            1. /opt/IBM/InstallationManager/eclipse/IBMIM --launcher.ini -input <response file path and name> OR as
                                                            2. /opt/IBM/InstallationManager/eclipse/IBMIM -input <response file path and name> ?

I am a bit confused after reading the installation/admin manual.

                                                                Hi Martina

Thank You ! That link gave me lot of useful information on the new method of installation. That answered lot of questions I had.

I am having problem with uninstalling: when I tired to run an earlier installation using launchpad.sh it invoked Firefox and I selected 3 components to install: ClearCase Full Function install, ClearQuest Integration with ClearCase and CM Server for ClearCase Remote Clients. It started the installation and when status bar was showing near 70% the browser craches and I was kicked out of the X11 GUI terminal on which I was running launchpad.sh. Now I am stuck with an incomplete installation.

To uninstall I created a response file and ran the command /opt/IBM/InstallationManager/eclipse/IBMIM -input path of response file and it gave this error - The processing instruction target matching "xXmMlL" is not allowed. The XML file I used as response file is attached. It appears like a syntax error.

Can you please let me know how I can fix this and do a clean uninstall ? To uninstall do I need to run IBMIM or is there a way to cleanup / uninstall without using IM ?

Your help is much appreciated !

your xml file has dashes in col1 in lines 4,11,12,37 that are not good xml syntax. Also, the uninstall that I recorded has modify="false" in what is line 37 in your xml file. I don't know how much that matters.

You do need to keep IM in sync with what is really installed. I have not seen a tech note that lists how to manually uninstall and clean up the IM brain. On *nix /var/ibm/InstallationManager/installed.xml could be that brain, but there could be other files involved.

I'd go the silent install route, since you will need that for your install anyway and you may have to create the response file from scratch - or can you run a record on another sun box where the GUI will work for you?

                                                                1. What exactly is a repositary ? Is SW Repositary is same as reposistary ?
                                                                2. Would one repositary be suffient for all OS's installs , all rational products and onging new ifixes released by IBM ? We have an interop envrioment so i plan to have one shared area for repositary on our network.
                                                                4. Does the following directory structure for our single global repositary look okay ?
                                                                Install Manager

I'm really struggling with a 7.1 silent install.

The first problem seems to be that it either IBMIMc or Installc expect the Java runtime environment to be in a JRE subfolder, when actually it gets installed into a version number\JRE folder i.e. jre_5.0.3.sr8a_20080811b\jre. This causes the install to fail as it cannot find javaw.exe.

The fix for this is to make a copy of the jre folder and move it one level higher then the install process will run correctly....
... but I cannot get it to be silent. It fires up install manager, but the user has to click next through the entries, which are completed for them thanks to the response file.

                                                                    So I'm running:

I had a question on copying the FixPack's to the respository. Is this the equivalent of patching the release area(in the older methodology)? Or when the actual install happens on a client, it will install the version followed by the fixpack from the repo?

                                                                        Thanks

I wanted to let you know that the IBM Education Assistant modules for ClearCase 7.1 installation have just been published.
