Pinned topic Developers Edition DVD installation advice

‏2007-10-24T17:25:50Z |

I just noticed something quirky about using Firefox while installing IDS Developers Edition from the DVD's handed out at the IOD conference.

When I click the install link, Firefox only lets me save/copy the setup.exe file from the DVD to my computer. But if you do that, then the resulting setup.exe file doesn't actually do anything when you run it. It must need some companion files on the DVD.

The workaround is pretty simple. Copy the link location for the setup.exe file on the DVD, and run that directly from the DVD. On my machine the link location is file:///D:/IDS/win_de/setup.exe

When I clicked Start -> Run... and ran the setup.exe program that way, everything worked fine.

I also experimented with Internet Explorer (IE), and saw a choice of Run or Save. The "Run" option worked fine.

One other thing. When choosing a password for your Informix account during installation, make sure whatever password you enter meets the security policies for your machine/company. It's one of those simple things that are obvious in hindsight, but easy to forget while you're doing the installation.

    Mozilla prevents launching programs through hyperlinks as a security precaution. Firefox is more than likely to be using the same code. Here is a link to an FAQ;

    I hope this helps.

    I received mine at the IOD conference last year. Not sure if they can be ordered, but the software is available for download from here:

    http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/informix/downloads.html

    Look in the middle of the page for "Developers Edition". (The page title says "Trials and demo", but that's somewhat misleading in the context of this particular download.)

    Other useful downloads for client API's can be found here:

    http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/informix/ids/ad/

    and the beta for the Macintosh platform can be found here:
