Hello all,

I'm having issues installing the RDAC driver version linuxrdac-09.01.B5.55 on SLES 10.1. If anyone can make any sense out of the error below your help would be extremly appreciated.

    Dear mikelbio,

if you will read carefully info about this version of RDAC you will see that your kernel is not supported:

Engenio Linux RDAC Driver Package for IBM DS4000 Storage Subsystems
    http://www.lsi.com/rdac/ds4000.html

You should try using the multipath-tools that come with SLES10. We are using them for a DS4100 controller and they have been working great (much better than RDAC ever did) Attached is the multipath.conf file we are using.

Interesting, I would also prefer to use the native Linux tools instead of RDAC, to among other things avoid a recompile every time the kernel is upgraded.
However my attempts with the DS3200 & DS4200 has so far failed, when I remove 1 of the host connections, multipath-tools correctly fails over to the other FC link, but the affected arrays don´t change controller ownership and thus I/O freezes.
Maybe the DS4100 is different ?
When I talked to an LSI person about this, they said that at least the DS3200 has a NVSRAM setting called "aft" or similar which controls the automatic failover.
According to the person I talked to this feature is set to off on Linux, because the supported method calls for the use of RDAC.
Anyone else have any info on this ? It would be nice to get it working without hacking the NVSRAM file...

    Dear mikelbio,

SLES 10 SP1 supported now for DS4000. Software available on IBM Web page:

    Finally!

Anyone know if this works for the DS 3x00 boxes as well ?
I can´t find anything on the download page, but why should
there be different version for the 4x00 and 3x00 series ?

    Regards

    Dear Daniel,

DS4000 and DS3000 are absolutely different systems and of course support for them different too.
I hope DS3000 support for RHEL5/SLES10SP1 will be soon.

    Hello all,

Trying to connect the following system with multipath:
    IBM DS4800-82
IBM x3550 with 2 Emulex LightPulse hba
    SuSE 10 (not SP1 atm)

Tried the multipath.conf which is in this thread but the DS4800 is still swapping from controller-A to B all the time. Do see they have both priority 2 with multipath -v2 -d.

    Dear Maurice,

lets check your system. Could you provide DSA log from your server (use DSA Portable edition and attache resulted file *.xml.gz) and Support Archive from your DS4800. And provide p/n and BIOS/firmware versions of your Emulex cards. Give us few words about your SAN or may be you used direct connection?

    Dear Alexander,

First of all thanks for the quick reply, have been dealing with this issue for some time now and think I am overlooking something.

SAN is an DS4800-82 with 4 EXP810 and 64 FC 74 GB - 15k disks. At the moment 2 hosts are directy connected to this storage. With the first system I configured 2 seperate paths and hosts to 2 LUNS but have no automatic failover this way. (latest firmwares for ESM/DS4800)
    Firmware version: 06.23.05.00
    NVSRAM version: C1815D480R923V09
The second host I configured with 1 host group with both hba's directly connected.

HBA: Fibre Channel: Emulex Corporation Zephyr-X LightPulse Fibre Channel Host Adapter (rev 02) - standard driver with came with SuSE 10.

    Thanks in advance,

    Maurice

    Maurice,

Could you provide Support Archive from your DS4800. And provide p/n and BIOS/firmware versions of your Emulex cards.

    Maurice,

there are few wrongs in configuration. If you want correct system you need read, for example, the next doc and reconfigure servers and storage.

    Few suggestions:

    • see sections "Auto-Logical Drive Transfer feature (ADT)" and "2.3.4 Storage partitioning" in doc:
DS4000 Best Practices and Performance Tuning Guide
    http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg246363.html

    • update your DS4800 software, EXP810 firmware and HBA firmware to fresh versions:
Downloads for DS4800 Midrange Disk System
    http://www-304.ibm.com/jct01004c/systems/support/storage/disk/ds4800 /firmware1.html

    • update server's software:
Software and device drivers - IBM System x3550 (Type 7978, 1913)

Testing with a different DS at the moment and updated all the firmwares, drivers and the ADT function of the DS4300.

    Maurice,

I am glad that now everything working good.
But IMHO it's not good idea to use Linux multipathing instead of RDAC driver.

    Good luck,

    Alexander,

Interesting discussion because I also heard the RDAC drivers are causing some troubles and certainly from SuSE 10 SP1 it is advisable to use the multipath drivers. Do know IBM always supported the RDAC but seems to be changing the last few months.
What are the pro's for the RDAC? Will cost us more effort to keep all patches up to date.

    Maurice,

in your first message we can see that you already tried RDAC. It was good, but you just need another version.

RDAC installation instruction and requirements available in his readme file. Read it carefully and I am sure that RDAC will work perfectly.

If any problem - inform us.
