Does Derby provide for full-text searching on a given column (or will it ever)?

Thanks

Outside of substring searches (using functions or the 'like' operator) on string columns, no. As far as 'will it ever?', I recommend posting this question to the Derby development commnunity at Apache. The mail list can be addressed with: derby-dev@db.apache.org. I recall seeing some discussions of implementing other types of indexes that may improve text search capabilities but I have not followed the thread. You can search for this and other message threads related to text search capabilities at the nabble archive site:

Some discussion about integrating Lucene is on the Derby wiki:

      http://wiki.apache.org/db-derby/LuceneIntegration?highlight=%28lucene%29

Also a couple Derby issues were opened:
      https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/DERBY-590
      https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/DERBY-472

      there's definitely interest!
