Installed RFT 7 .NET using VS2003. CallScripts to scripts that reside in folders throw an exception:
"The located assembly's manifest definition with name 'rtxftnet' does not match the assembly reference"

In contacting customer support they were not even aware that they were supporting this yet and didn't even have it installed. I am going to try to uninstall and go back to 6.1. I just hope that the new version didn't modify my projects such that I can't go back.

I get this same problem. It must be due to migrating a project from Functional Tester 6.1 to 7.0. Can someone please take a look at a solution. I would really like to use RTF 7 but need the ablility to use callscript.

I notice that the scripts that are being called do not run if they are run independently. When I run the failing scripts, the playback window flashes quickly and no log is created. I don't see any difference between the scripts that do run fine and the scripts that fail.

Here is a possible solution if your scripts produced with RTF 6.1 dont compile when you try to run them with RFT 7.0. Make a new RFT project with RTF 7.0 and simple export them from the old project and import them into the new project.

We did experience similar problems (we are using .NET scripting in Visual Studio 2005):

• Somtimes after starting playback of a simple test script execution of the script would return without executing any code and without generating a log file.

• Sometimes after starting recording within an existing script the record window would briefly appear and then close again.

Both symptoms were gone after restarting Visual Studio.

Yes, I think we have the same problem. I am also using .net scripting in Visual Studio 2005. Just restarting didn't seem to fix it for me. I am glad I got it working now though.

For RFT using Visual Studio 2005 as the IDE, I think we will revert to 6.1.1.1 until IBM releases an update to version 7.

To answer my own question in this thread, IBM Rational tech support has confirmed that IE7 is not yet supported in this latest release. The reason for this is acceptable: the final version of IE7 had not yet been released when RFT V7 was being QA'd. While I consider this a black eye for IBM, I certainly wouldn't want them releasing functionality that hasn't been sufficiently QA'd.

Unfortunately, insufficient QA'ing is why exactly I'm reverting to 6.1.1.1, as opposed to moving forward with V7. When I attempted to insert a verification point in RFT V7 w/VS2005 IDE, the wizard seemed to behave fine - until I was ready to click "Finish". Clicking "Finish" did absolutely nothing. I clicked, and waited. I clicked 50 times in a row. The system wasn't frozen; the Finish button simply didn't do anything.

While I could live with IE7 not yet being supported, I won't work with a version whose basic functionality worked fine in a prior release but now seems entirely broken in the newest release. It only makes sense to wait until IBM Rational has had some time to absorb these kinds of defects and patch them.

Nevertheless, thanks for updating the software, IBM - we want to continue using these products effectively, with the latest technologies. I just hope that with the next patch, things will be working better.

We would like to move from RFT 6.1.1.1 to 7.0 unfortunately we encountered quite some problems during deinstallation of RFT 6.1.1.1. We had to manually remove registry keys of "IBM Rational Agent Controller" to be able to install RFT 7.0. And we found a lot of registry keys of RFT 6 after its deinstallation. The files have also not been removed.

What is the recommendet method of completely deinstalling RFT 6 and all related products?

this is a slightly longer version of a post a couple of months back

this is only for RFT, the instructions could be different if you have
additional Rational products installed!

1. commit changes
2. stop RationalAgentController? service
* right click on "My Computer" -> manage
* select services and applications
* then services
* stop IBM Rational Agent controller
3. uninstall service
* start-> run-> cmd
* cd C:\Program Files\IBM\Rational\SDP\6.0\IBM_Agent_Controller\bin
* manageservice.exe remove "IBM Rational Agent Controller"
4. make sure to close the command window and any folders open in
the rational directories
5. Use Control Panel to Remove RFT.
Start > Program Files > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs >
select Rational Functional Tester and click the Change/Remove button.
6. Go into Windows Explorer and delete the Rational directory under
C:\Program Files\IBM\Rational.
7. Go into C:\Documents and Settings\your username\ and delete your
IBM directory.
Also, if it exists, go into C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\
and delete the IBM directory.
(Make sure any projects you created in here you back up before deleting).
8. Next go the Windows directory. Typically C:\Windows or C:\WINNT.
Go into the IBM directory and remove the RAT60 directory and
everything underneath it. (It may not be there so if you do not see
then do not worry about it, I found one called RAM60 which i removed).
9. Also you need to go into the registry (Start-Run-regedit)
and delete the Functional Tester Keys below by right clicking on
the key and deleting it.
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\IBM\Rational
* HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Rational Software\FT
10. Then Reboot.

Can't uninstall agent controller

‏2006-12-13T11:32:51Z  in response to msiegel
I had been running RFT 6.1.1.1 and Test Manager 2003...
I uninstalled RFT to install RFT 7 beta. It went on with the older TestManager still installed.
I worked for a few weeks with RFT 7 beta and now want to go to the released RFT 7.
I unistalled RFT 7 beta and TestManager but get an error trying to uninstall the agent controller saying something is using it.
RFT 7 won't install because the agent controller is installed.

How can I get the agent controller to uninstall?

Thanks, but I tried that, still didn't work.
So, I deleted the registry keys and directories.
I then tried to uninstall agent controller and it said it was already uninstalled (expected) and gave me the option of removing it from Add/Remove list. So I did. RFT 7 is now installed.

Moving onward.

My team was having the same issue. We found that you should google the lastest version RAC, which will overwrite the old version of RAC. Then go to the uninstall folder of the RAC version you just installed and click the uninstall.exe. It's a pain but it works!

Is the extension for Terminal apps compatible with V7? I successfully installed the extension with RFT V7 and it shows up in the Configure Applications menu (not on the toolbar though) but when I try to run a script that uses the Terminal application it just aborts and the terminal application does not start up.

We are heavily depended on RTE (Extension for Terminal-based Apps) and we are testing RFT with RTE v1.2. We manually configured RFT7.0 with RTE1.2 (Compatible with RFT6.1.1.1) and it seems it working with a slow response.

Does anyboady tried it and seen any issues with it?

How to rollback to RFT 6.1

‏2007-01-04T05:29:24Z  in response to msiegel
We have used RFT 6.1 to create some scripts. After updated to RFT V7, those stripts are not able to replay properly. There is a warning message states that some incompatiablities issues with the updated version 7. It prompts me to convert the project to RFT V7. Since other team members are not updated to V7, If I updated the project, other team member won't able to run them successfully.
So I have to rollback to RFT V7 to V6. so what steps are necessary?

unistall the RFT V7
uninstall the Rational Agent Controller 7.0.1

Do I need to manually to remove the RFT's DLLs in the windows system32 folder?
Thanks for your help!

6.1.1.1 HTML Object Map rendered useless by upgrading to 7.0

‏2007-01-12T17:55:51Z  in response to msiegel
I have submitted an ESR for this issue I'm having but was wondering if anyone else had encountered this and if they were able to resolve it?

After upgrading Functional Tester from 6.1.1.1 to 7.0 I tried running a HTML VB .Net script which references an object map created in 6.1.1.1.

After starting Internet Explorer, the script was then unable to recognize the top level BrowerTestObject (Html.HtmlBrowser in the object map). I got the following exception:
exception_name = Rational.Test.Ft.ObjectNotFoundException
exception_message = Looking for BrowserTestObject(Name: Browser, Map: Browser) - no plausible candidate was found.

So I opened my object map, went to the 'Test Object' menu and selected 'Insert Objects'. I selected all of the objects from a web page already included in the object map hoping most would already match. Unfortunately, not one did starting with the root object.

The original root browser object had the following recognition parameters:

.browserName = MS Internet Explorer
.class = HTML.HTMLBrowser

The new root object has the following recognition parameters:

.class = IEFrame
.processName = IEXPLORE.EXE
.text = browser title bar text

And the differences continue all of the way through the object map tree. My 6.1.1.1 'Html.HtmlDocument' objects appear to be 7.0 '.Pane' objects within 'Shell DocObject View' objects, my 6.1.1.1 'Html.INPUT.button' objects appear to be 7.0 '.Pushbutton' objects, and so on... And they all have different recognition parameters than the original objects.

Needless to say, my scripts no longer has any idea of what objects are on the screen. Do I need to reconstruct my entire object map, which includes 1000's of objects? Or is there something else I can do to get 7.0 to recognize my original objects?

That stinks. I haven't done the 7.0 upgrade so I don't know if your
experience is expected/normal.

I have had to deal with major changes like this, though, due to
wholesale modifications to the application being tested. The Find &
Modify features of the Object Map saved me a lot of work. It's not
going to be able to help you if there have been hierarchical changes, like:

My 6.1.1.1 'Html.HtmlDocument' objects appear to be 7.0 '.Pane' objects
within 'Shell DocObject View' objects

But if the property & value modifications seem consistent then you
should be able to use "Find & Modify" to make the necessary changes.

That said, this seems like a really bad characteristic of the RFT 7.0
upgrade.

My problem has been resolved. I must've missed something (either a directory or registry entry) when uninstalling all of my 6.1.1.1. components.

From my IBM support guy:

1. When uninstalling RFT 6.x version, you need to always do a clean uninstall. Removing the product through Control Panel/Add Remove programs does not always clean up everything.
You need to go into the registry and clean it up and then remove the folders. We have seen mutiple instances where not doing this has resulted in weird behavior and when a reinstall is done.

2. User permission's/settings are very key to using RFT. The browser settings depends can differ from user to user. So the way RFT talks to the browser can differ too.

any more specific advice? i just upgraded my workstation to 7 to try it before upgrading my group and i'm having the same problem. before installing 7 i uninstalled 6.1 and did a search through my registry for RFT items. I only found one for RFT, everything else was ClearCase. 7 installed fine, and I could import my project, but when i tried to run it failed right off the bat because it couldn't find an object. if it is so picky about registry keys, it would be nice if rational deleted the keys on uninstall since they put them there in the first place. i have no problem modifying my registry, but i don't know for sure which ones need to go.

Hi there,
Just wondering if you could explain how you fixed the issue with RFT not being able to recognize objects after you upgraded to 7.0? We uninstalled RFT 6.1.1.1 yesterday, and did the following (with the help of IBM customer support) to ensure it was a clean un-install:

The following instruction is from IBM Rational Functional Tester Fix Pack

6.1.1.1 - Readme

To manually uninstall the IBM Rational Agent Controller component of the RFT update, follow these steps:

End process for nutsrv4.exe (thru Task Manager, End Process).
Go to Start->Run services.msc - Stop the IBM Rational Agent Controller service running on the machine. In the Control Panel click Administrative Tools > Services.
Right-click IBM Rational Agent Control > Stop (if you go into the properties, change it to Disabled).

2. Remove the install directory for the IBM Agent Controller component.

In Windows Explorer, delete the IBM_Agent_Controller folder, which is in the directory where you installed Functional Tester. The default location of the Rational install directory is C:\Program Files\IBM\Rational\SDP\6.0.

3. Delete the update history folder, C:\Windows\IBM\RAC60.

4. Remove the registry setting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\IBM\Rational

Agent Controller. Using regedit.exe, navigate to the registry, right-click the key, and select Delete.

5. restart the PC and start RFT 7.0 install.

Then we installed 7.0 and are now faced with the object recognition problem. I called IBM again and was told to make sure that we added our testing environments back in (under the Configure menu, go to 'Congifure Applications for Testing') and enabled all our jre's (Configure->Enable Environments for Testing). All this had no effect on RFT's ability to recognize the objects in the object map. So the technical support guy told me we'd have to open EVERY single object in the object map and do an update object properties (which is going to be somewhat frustrating and tedious for the 300-400 or so objects we have so far).

Just wondering if perhaps there is something else we can try to avoid having to update every object?

Thanks!!!
Shelley

Resolution to Object Recognition Problem

‏2007-01-25T20:16:52Z  in response to ShelleyBeanz
Hi there,
After trying just about everything, we have finally fixed the problem! If you're upgrading from 6.1.1.1 to 7.0, follow the steps outlined in my previous post, then, if you're having issues with object recognition, do the following:

1) Download the latest updates available for your java plugin (locate the java icon in the right-hand side of your task bar and hover over it, it should give you the option to download the updates from there). If that doesn't work, go to Settings->Control Panel->Java and under the Update tab, click 'Update Now', it should then give you a pop up you can click to download the updates.

2) Once you've downloaded them, restart your computer.

3) Open RFT. Go to Configure->Enable Environments for Testing... This will open a dialog box. Click on the Java Environments tab. You'll see a list of Java Environments there. Click on Search (and I selected search all drives but I'm not sure if that matters). Ensure that all the java files in the list are now Enabled. If they aren't, click 'Select All' and hit 'Enable'.

4) Click on the Web Browsers tab. Click the 'Test' button. This will open a browser window where you can run the diagnostic tool to test if the browser is being recognized properly. If it is successful, you should now be able to play back and record with no issue!

I tried to follow the solution by downloading the latest version of the Java Jre. After following the instructions to the tee, I ran my scripts in RFT 7.0 (after converting from 6) but i have the same object recognition problem.

I tried to record a brand new, simple script by just opening an application. The application opens brieftly then closes. I get a java error message generated to my desktop.

The same problem of before mentioned.
After update Java to 6 or 7 version the problem start.
Remove update java 6 or 7 and the problem should be resolved.

Can't share a project with other testers?!!

‏2007-01-25T20:26:10Z  in response to msiegel
Hi there,
We're having a serious issue right now with sharing our project. We have a team of three testers, each maintaining a separate group of testing modules within test folders in a shared RFT project. In 6.1.1.1 this did not seem to present an issue, and IBM themselves told me that sharing a project was encouraged as Rational was not built to share scripts or methods between projects.
Since upgrading to version 7.0 (and for those of you who haven't yet I suggest you wait, there are WAY too many issues going from 6.1.1.1 to 7.0), we have had a slew of problems, the latest being that if I connect to the project and modify a script within one of my folders, I seem to take ownership of the entire project, so that when my collegue connects to it and attempts to make a change to one of her scripts, she gets errors that say there's no class file available, and one suggestion was to refresh the project as there are discrepencies. In order to fix the issue, we both had to disconnect and reconnect, and then we could run our scripts until the next person tried to make a change and save. We can't work this way. Is there anyone out there who has experienced this? I'd appreciate any advice you can offer at this point as we have lost an entire week by upgrading the project and really can't afford to start over from scratch.

Trying not to pull my hair out... :(

are you all connecting to the same physical copy?

if so, you should each have your own copy, and use cvsor other to
share the modifications.

The guys at IBM say we should be using Clear Case as it would apparently allow us to work out of one project and check out the scripts, then re-check them in when we're done...

Has anyone used Clear Case to share a test project?

you should take some time and research the following, and choose what
is best for you:

cvs is the unix standard distributed version control system, built
upon RCS, the mother of decent revision control.

subversion SVN is a decent version control system, aimed at
overcoming the problems associated with CVS
http://subversion.tigris.org/

Visual source safe is microsofts version control system.

clearcase is IBM's version control.
for a free one, CVS or SVN, eclipse (the RFT IDE) has a built in CVS
client, and you can no doubt download one for SVN.

for one that costs.
microsoft is probably cheaper, but clearcase has a client in the RFT eclipse.

The big advantage to using ClearCase with RFT is that the work required
to integrate the whole solution has been done already. An RFT script is
made up of several different assets that need to remain in sync with
each other. Usually, those assets include the test.java file (the one
you edit), the testHelper.java file (in the resources tree), the .rftdef
xml file (in the resources tree) and an object map (either shared or
not). If you're using VerificationPoints, they also have files. When
you check in/out a "test script" you want all of those things to migrate
together. You don't, for example, want someone to check in changes to
the test.java file and forget to check in the .rftdef file or
testHelper.java file since the pieces that make up the "test script"
would then likely be inconsistent - and you'd have a broken test. The
Rational folks have take care of this with the RFT/ClearCase LT solution
that they package together. It works well enough that most of our test
developers never have to go outside of Eclipse to mess with source control.

You could implement the same with CVS, but it would take time. I
haven't seen anyone post any CVS config files addressing this.

Jason

Looking forward to future Functional Tester enhancements

‏2007-03-28T11:32:47Z  in response to msiegel
Dear IBM, Rational
I'd like to point some enhancements to the Functional Tester, I'd be pleased to see in the future releases of the product. Hope others share my opinion.
1. Ability to use datapool references in the Test Object Map:
Ability to use datapool references instead of literals in Verification Points was a very good feature implemented. It would be yet much better if such feature was implemented for Test Object Map (Recognition properties). You see there are a huge lot of objects with such recognition properties as ".text", ".title", ".url", ".value", etc. which most times contain dynamic data that depends on test data entered in the application earlier or whatever, and it would be good to have a possibility to bind such properties to the test data in the datapool.
2. Ability to have shared Verification Points:
Flexibility to associate a verification point with any test objects was also a very good feature implemented. It would be yet much better if this feature was extended with the ability to share Verification Point among several scripts (however I understand that it's possible to do programmaticly now through callScript).
3. Ability to add data to the datapool on Runtime:
It seems there is no such mechanism implemented (As far as it's concerned I found only addVariable method).
4. Make Test Object Map more flexible by implementing ability to create test objects in the Test Object Map manually, and ability to move test objects throughout the Test Object Map hierarchy:
I faced the problem when test objects starting with certain object in the TO hierarchy can't be found in the application-under-test, just because some extra test object appeared in the middle of hierarhy (For instance there were some Test Objects under Html.Document test object, and then in the next app version those test objects appears under Html.DIV container. FT failes to recognize them since it considers parent matching in the recognition score too). Updating Test Object Map using available means took too long.

Kindest regards, VVhale

I have been sold floating licenses for the product. V6.x.x had an on-your-honor floating license (it wouldn't hook up to a license server), but now that I'm trying to convert to v7 I see I can attach to a license server through IBM Installation Manager. When I try to connect to my license server (which works for my old Rational Robot installations) using the default port, which from the config information for the license server, seems to be 27000, Installation Manager says that it cannot connect to the server. I can ping that box from a cmd prompt using its short name, fully qualified name, and IP address. However, none of these will work from within the Installation Manager. Any suggestions?

There seems to be an issue with the license server's support for the v7 desktop products. See this: http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21250404

We're in the process of updating our license server now.

Good Day,

Upgrading your instance of IBM Installation Manager to v1.0.0.3 will resolve a majority of your install issues for Caspian tools. Also, do NOT have any browser sessions open during your installation process or your entire install will be corrupted (at least with RFT). This is defect.

Has anybody got RFT7 to work with Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Testers? Its one of the 3 Team Edition versions, not the standalone standard VS2005. I have tried several times to get the integration to work but keep having problems opening rft scripts.

The IBM Installtion Manager changes scripting from VS2003 to VS2005, then I can open the RFT project in VS2005, but when I select a script to open Visual Studio crashes. A new project can be created, new script created but when this is saved and I try to re-open visual studio crashes? I spoke to an IBM rep about this and was told that every version, except express, of Visual Studio 2005 works with RFT7. If someone else had got this working then I could then narrow the problem down to my installation, I have tried VS2005 standard edition with RFT6 but now have upgraded to RFT7 & VS2005 Team Edition.

We had the same issues your describing, and it turned out to be some .Net 2.0 dll's that we were including in our customization directory. It might help to try to take out all .dll's from there. With them in the directory, it worked fine for us in VS2003, but not for VS2005 Team Edition for Testers, as there were multiple copies of the framework .dll's.

Do you mean the customization directory where users can add DLLs to reference in existing RFT projects? If so then I only have the default files in here, nothing has been added since installation.

The actual framework 2 DLLs should be present in the windows/microsoft.net folder?

The VS2005 install was over an existing VS2003 installation (can exist side by side for "normal" VS projects, not for RFT projects?) and I think their might be an issue with some DLLs that were used for VS2003 script development being removed once VS2005 is installed, need to investigate this to see if this is causing my problems.

That may not be the same problem we encountered. We were using RFT with VS2003, and since that was using framework 1.1, someone put the .Net 2.0 dll's inside of the customization directory to get access to them. This worked fine, but when we upgraded to 2005 there were some conflicts that made RFT crash whenever we opened up a project. I had thought that maybe this could have been the problem, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be.

Having to constantly clean project, refresh project etc to get scripts to run

‏2007-06-01T16:30:20Z  in response to msiegel
We just upgraded to 7.0.0.2 and we are having issues with running our scripts from 6.1.1.1. Quite often when we try to run the scripts, as the project is being built, RFT will suddenly find thousands of erros in the project while its being built. After its built, the errors will go away, but when the script execution begins, it promptly ends with a NoClassDefFoundError. At this point we have to clean the project and refresh it, we're using Clear Case for version control, before the script will run again. We'll be able to execute it a couple of times before the whole issue will repeat itself. I am told that we did not recreate the project on the Clear Case server, so this may be the issue. Anyone else have this problem or suggestions for a solution?

on two different machines and have experienced this on both
installations. I noticed that when the script execution is invoked
(wheter through the eclipse IDE or even from the command line) that my
.class files go away and I get the NoClassDefFoundError. I have a PMR
that I opened last week and am waiting for response from the escalation
people.

I haven't done anything on the ClearCase server other than what the
"project upgrade" process did itself. When I pointed RFT 7 to the
project in the CC view, it found that it was from an earlier version of
RFT and asked if it should upgrade. As the upgrade began, I saw that it
was checking out and back in files. It automatically checked in an
updated version of the DatastoreDefinition.rftdsd file and also
created/updated .testsuite files for all the scripts in my project (I
don't know what the .testsuite files are for... maybe something with
TestManager, which I don't use). I sure wish the upgrade didn't
automatically check in the new version of the changed files, but it did.

Jason,

Thanks for the reply. What you are describing is exactly what we are seeing, though we haven't witnessed the class files being deleated on execution. A few questions:

What version of RFT did you upgrade from?

We went from 6.1.1.1 with an iFix

What version of ClearCase are you running?

We just installed 7.0.0.1 and are in the process of getting an iFix for that version.

Would you mind sending me the PMR number so I can track the issue?

If you can send it feel free to use the email address in my profile.

Have you had any issues with sluggish performance?

We're having problems with Rational taking a long time to build the project, run the scripts, and even just open up the browser. Its not excessively long, but it is very noticeable and longer than any wait we had with 6.
We are going to delete our project, create a new one with 7 and import the export we made just before updating.

Our upgrade is from RFT 6.1.1.1 to 7.0.0.2

The ClearCase LT clients and server are all 7.0.0.0

I have noticed things being slow, but I'm not sure how much of that is
due to the funny-business going on with my class files when I tell it to
run. One thing that is definitely slower and wouldn't seem to be
related is that when I tell it to go find an object that I have mapped
(using 'highlight' or 'update recognition properties') there is a
significant delay before it starts working. Likewise, dragging the
little HAND icon over the application shows significant delays as I
watch the red highlight box transitioning from enclosing objects down to
the one that I've been hovering over for a second or two. My
application is Java-based, not a browser app.

I can send you the PMR in a separate email. I'm interested to see what
happens when you create a new project.

We bit the bullet today. Exported our project, deleted it, created a new project and then imported all of our scripts. So far, simply recreating the project doesn't seem to have had any effect on our main issue(NoClassDefFound errors). However, I did find a post from back in April that may help a little. Third post in this thread: http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/forums/dw_thread.jsp?message=13943584&cat=24&thread=159913&treeDisplayType=threadmode1&forum=322#13943584

"This is a know problem with Eclipse. Use the workaround below to recompile
Sometimes while playing back a Functional Test script,
java.lang.ClassNotFoundException occurs. This is a problem with Eclipse.
Workaround: Perform the following:
1. Un-check Project > Build Automatically option.
2. Click Project > Clean. In the Clean dialog box, select Clean All
Projects and click OK to build the project from the scratch.
3. Execute the scripts

• Swathi"

I unchecked the build automatically and started manually cleaning the project. So far it seems as though everything is running fine. Does anyone know if there is any documentation on this issue and why we haven't seen it until we installed RFT 7? Is the bug only in a newer version of Eclipse that RFT 7 uses, but 6 did not? The strange thing is that it seems as though this is a pretty major issue and I am surprised that it doesn't seem to be very widespread. I have to wonder if there is something else that I am missing, or if everyone has just been doing this for a while.

Also, as for our speed issue, we're thinking its an issue with the amount of RAM we have installed on our systems. We're currently sitting at 512MB and are hoping to get upgraded to 2GB for development systems, 1GB for deployment systems.

Since there were others having the same problem with .class files disappearing when going to run scripts, I thought I would post the "resolution" I got from IBM support.

==== snippet from support email response ====
I am following up to let you know that the issue raised in this issue PMR
has been identified as a defect. Engineering suggested that the workaround
is to create a new workspace.

The defect has been logged as APAR - PK47395. I will follow-up with you as
soon as the fix for this issue becomes available.
=============================================

I don't understand the suggestion of creating a new workspace. As soon as we installed RFT 7 it created a new workspace (it doesn't use the workspace left from the RFT 6 installation). I tried anyway, and eventually still had the same problem.

The only workaround that I've used with success is to disable the "Build Automatically" feature. That's too bad.

Don't bother with all of the workspace stuff. I have been working with support for about three days and found the problem/resolution. (It is not pretty though)

Export you project to your local desktop. Create a new project on your local system. Import the project into the new local project and it will work great. The real problem is who wants to use a local project, the only option we could fine was to make changes to the project, export it, and save the export file to a network share to be downloaded by the rest of the team. Only one person can make changes at a time since there is no way I know of to merge an exported project file.

Support told me this was the only "workaround" that they have right now. I just can't believe they would provide code this badly tested to an entire QA industry.

Since there were many people reporting having problems with this RFT defect, I thought I'd post an update. This is the problem where a project is getting "cleaned" when you go to execute a script, often resulting in a NoClassDefFoundError exception. The workaround was to not use the "Build Automatically" feature of eclipse.

IBM recently told me that the problem reported by my PMR was resolved. I updated a machine to 7.0.1.2 to give it a try, and it seems to be working for me.

We are using RFT 8.1 and having the same problem! Disabling Build Automatically is annoying because when we make a code change and start execution without re-build, we get ClassNotFoundExcepion and clean-rebuild does not help this time. We need to clean, restart RFT and rebuild again in this case.

Anyone having the same problem? Perhaps I should ask this in a new topic...

I've just upgraded to RFT version 7.0.0.2 from 6.1.1.1 (Java scripting). Test scripts I had created using version 6 (using IE6) run much slower on version 7 (using IE7). Can anyone offer a reason for this? Verification points take longer to check, and it takes longer to find/move between objects during playback.

When I installed version 7, I'd just installed a new hard drive (and clean build of XP), so should have no problems with bits of version 6 hanging around...

Matt,

I haven't seen any answer as to why actions are taking longer in RFT V7, but you are apparently in good company. There have been several postings about this and there are surely others (me included) who have experienced it but not mentioned it yet in the forum.

Has anyone submitted a PMR for the V7 performance?

I just uninstalled IE7 and went back to IE6 and voilà! RFT v7 now functions at the same speed as v6. I also tried to run the same scripts in Firefox, but RFT doesn't seem to be able to play back the script correctly. If this is something that others of you out there are seeing, perhaps the implementation of support for IE7 and Firefox isn't quite right yet.

what version of IE 6 are you using? We're running 6.0.2900.2180 SP2 on WinXP and we're seeing RFT load times of up to a minute and script execution times anywhere from 30 seconds to 3-4 minutes, with most executions takeing between 2:30 and 3:30 minutes. Have your times been faster or slower than this?

Also, we opened a PMR against this and other performance problems (slugish UI response, slow execution time, etc). I'll update if I can get anything concrete from support.

I'm using the same version as you guys. RFT starts running scripts quickly (about 10 seconds from minimizing RFT to playback starting), and once in playback it moves between objects on the screen and performs verification points quickly.

RFT v7 seems to work (for me anyway) no quicker or slower than v6. Its hard to say whether my performance is better or worse than your's, but from what you're saying I would think that your's may be worse. When I was using IE7 i was getting noticeably sluggish response from my GUI during recording and playback.

What is your setup like? Are you using a code management system like ClearCase or CVS? What version of Java are you using? Any specific preference changes you have made that might affect the execution speed?

Here is our setup:

RFT 7.0.0.2
IE 6
ClearCase 7 (latest version with iFix)
Java 1.5
Tests run on laptops with duel 1.6GHz Intel processors and 512MB of RAM

Script execution is up to around 4 minutes from pressing the play button until the playback window opens. We have noticed that running the scripts through the Rational CLI is a lot faster and playback begins withing a few seconds so we are wondering if its more of a preferences issue vs a system hardware issue.

I'm not using any kind of code management (bad practice, I know). At a glance, the only noticeable difference is that my machine has 2.5GB of RAM, and I have newer version of Java.

My set up is...
RFT 7.0.0.2
IE 6
Java 1.6.0_01
Pentium 4 desktop, 2.8GHz
2.5GB RAM

I remember reading somewhere on the forum that RFT is particularly RAM intensive. Perhaps some more RAM will solve your problems?

RAM was our orignal thought, but we ran scripts without issue on these same systems using RFT6. Also, we upgraded one system to 1GB and still saw the same problem. Maybe it is RAM and we just won't see a difference until we get up in the 2GB range.

Sorry for being late to join the party - I still have problems with 2GB of RAM - I don't think it's a memory issue.

My issue with IE 7 is that my scripts written with RFT v6.1.1.1, 7.0.0.0, 7.0.0.1, and 7.0.0.2 will not recognize objects at all (during playback - it does recognize the object during record and I've used regular expressions to eliminate session specific data - wierd).

I'm going to start a new post on this but please let me know about your performance PMR.

Try creating a new project locally on your workstation. Then export the scripts you are using and then import them into the new local project.

When you run the script now it should work.

The real problem here is the accessing projects over a network, and as far as I know there is no workaround.

1. Receiving errors when trying to execute RFT6.1 scripts on RFT7.0. It keeps referring to RFT6.1 registry key even though we did a clean uninstall. The workaround was to create a new project on RFT7.0 and import all RFT6.1 projects.

2. RFT7.0 throws errors when executing RFT6.1 scripts with the message saying "No plausible candidate was found". Obviously, RFT7.0 is unable to recognize any objects created on RFT6.1

3. We got warning on every single scripts after upgrade. When scripts created on RFT6.1(with VS2003), the TestMain () doesn't return a value but now it's required on RFT7.0(with VS2005).

Does anyone have any ideas how to handle the problems we are experiencing?

We just installed RFT v7.0.0.2 on a machine running on Windows Server 2003. This machine already has Visual Interdev, Visual Basic 6 and Visual Studio 2003 installed prior to the RFT installation. After installing RFT, we are unable to access our development projects in Visual Interdev. We also had issues with being able to check in/check out files to Visual Source Safe within our Visual Studio project. We use VSS instead of Clear Case. Has anyone else ran across these issues? Does anyone have a solution with the issue on accessing Visual Interdev projects? We do not have this issue on machines that does not have RFT installed but has Visual Interdev, Visual Basic 6 and Visual Studio 2003.

Plesea advice.

Thanks.

Hi,
I am new to RFT.
I just installed RFT V7 and recorded a .net test script
I do configured my application and enabled the environments
But when I playback the script, I get the following exception
Cannot start application ApplicationName: No configuration information found

Can somebody help me to figure out if I missed something in installation

Cannot install Rational Functional Tester 7

‏2007-10-02T20:59:53Z  in response to msiegel
Hi, I am attempting install Rational Functional Tester 7, but it is failing. I get a warning message that says I already have Agent Controller installed. I continue anyways and the installation fails. I cannot "uncheck" Agent Controller as it is part of the mandatory install. Is there any workarounds?
My agent controller seems to work with all my other Rational products, so I am reluctant to un-install my current Agent Controller.

You need have Agent Controller to run RFT, you cannot uninstal agent Controller only, only together with RFT.

We recently upgraded a single desktop to 7.0.1 to test the upgrade. I have a JAR file that I have placed in the customization directory. With RFT 6.0 my projects all build fine and execute correctly. In 7.0.1, I can see that the JAR file is in the build path of my project but the project will not build returning an "import cannot be found" error. What am I missing?

Build manually by right clicking the project. Select Properties -> Java Build path Tab -> Select Add Jars. Here choose the external jars which ever required.

I have faced a type of issue in RFT 7 version with VS2005.

I have installed RFT7.0 licensed version after installing VS.net 2005. Then i have upgraded RFT to 7.0.1.1 version without installing 7.0.1 version. Hence RFT does not support with VS2005. Then i have rolled back to 7.0 version, with this it worked fine. So install 7.0.1 version and then install 7.0.1.1 version for working with VS.Net.

Apparently, IBM is still working on a new version of Terminal Based extension for V7.0. You will need to ask your IBM rep for an ETA.
