Pinned topic IBM UML Certification

‏2006-02-13T10:59:21Z |
Hi,
I am trying to get the certification from IBM for "IBM Certified Specialist for Rational Object Oriented Analysis and Design".
For that, enrolled myself in the test 633 for "Object Oriented Analysis and Design Part 1".
I have gone thru the courseware, thru the books "UML Distilled" and Bible etc. Have also been working on UML diagrams for my current project and other behavioral diagrams during the designing phase.
For the certification exam, am not able to find out a single place from where I can get a sample list of the types of questions that come in the exam. So, as of now, even after working and studying for the exam , am not in a situation to take the exam just 'cos I have no idea about the types and kind of questions that appear in the exam.
If you have any idea, or know of any website which is authenticate enough to get the sample papers or questions from, please tell me. If there is anything IBM provides in this respect, pls update me.
thanks,
-parora

My experience with this test in the past is that there is a multiple choice part and a practical part (create a model).

I haven't taken the test in many years, so do not know how the test has changed.

One tip I will offer - the Rational tools (especially Rose) are not identical with UML (especially 2.0). If there is a question in the test where the answer is different for the Rational tools than for the UML standard, pick the answer for the Rational tools. Remember that the IBM certification is for OOAD as it is supported in the Rational tools. Generic UML certification is offered through OMG.

    Good luck!

    Hi!

My Advice , don't worry this exam is easier than ibm 486. As for the preparation, you should know the IBM material well (dev 475 OOAD UML course material) and your UML fundamentals should be good. Also Brush up your language skills :) the only difficulty people normally face is the confusing language specially in the multiple selection questions. the whole exam is objective type.

    All the best

    Hi Akash,
Thanks for the advice, I had taken the first step of 633, OOAD-I and cleared it. now am going to work on 634, I hope that will also be likewise.
Can you suggest any more resources than DEV475, any book, any papers or articles.
Cos the test objectives merely mention, Rational unified process, and I am really scared, how much do they mean by it :-)
Any guidance or suggestion would be highly appreciated.
    thanks,

    Hi Prem,

I also applied for the 633 exam and still no clue how the questions will be and what study material I have to follow...I have undergone the training program on OOAD, UML with Rational Rose. Could you please suggest me, how should I go about clearing this test...

    Thanks in Advance

    Hi Rams,
I recall a few things, which I can tell you. Otherwise the training program is definitely very good. We just need to go thru the program and dig deep into everything that is mentioned in short in that program. I used the "UML Distilled" by Martin Fowler also, very rigorously for this. And, please do go thru everything in that book, questions came from every nook and corner of that book.
Primarily the questions are of test and diagrams, I would say a lot of diagrams.
Important things, which appeared in paper, I can remember are :

    1) Types of Classes (e.g., parameterized, utility classes, etc)
    2) Types of messages in Seq diagrams ( synchronous, asynchronous, simple messages etc)
    3) Many questions on Scenarios.
    4) Visibility notations for attributes/operations(i.e., +,-,#)
    5) Event/Guard/Action- read in detail and understand the representation in diagrams, they tend to be confusing.
    6) Encapsulation/Abstraction/Inheritance/Multiplicity - Definitions.
    7) Many diagram questions were from Sequence Diagrams- pay extra attention on Seq Diagrams.
    8) Many questions on Aggregation(Composite, etc) and many diagrams questions on Aggregation.
    9) Statechart diagrams.

I didn't go thru and pay much attention to Deployment and Component Diagrams, but there were I guess 3-4 questions on the definition and description of Deployment/Components/Process/Design Elements etc.

    I hope it helps,
    thanks,
