Pinned topic input on community home page sought

‏2005-08-25T23:46:01Z |
Hello,
The developerWorks Community team is looking to deploy a new landing page. It should provide a place to access various community functions (forums, blogs, wikis, etc) across all IBM Software Group brands (WebSphere, DB2, Lotus, Tivoli, Rational).

A mockup of the landing page is available at http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/rational/community/attachment s/community_home_page.gif

On behalf of the Community team, I'm soliciting your input on this page. Please share with us what should be different, what you like, don't like, is confusing, etc.

You'll notice that at the bottom is a blank portlet. This won't be on the final version, but for now is a way to ask you "what did we leave out that is needed?".

Some other specific questions we have are:
* How frequently should the top highlighted feature change?
  • Would you want to personalize this page?
  • what do you expect to happen/what would you want to happen when you click on the "All forums" or "All blogs" links.

Thanks in advance for any input. It will be greatly appreciated.
Yours, Marc

I think that you need to regenerate the picture. It doesn't display well for me, and I have a pretty good monitor.

Some other specific questions we have are:
    * How frequently should the top highlighted feature
    change?

    At least daily.

    * Would you want to personalize this page?

Yes. With groups/blogs that I'm interested in.

    * what do you expect to happen/what would you want to
happen when you click on the "All forums" or "All
    blogs" links.

I'd like to see some sort of search page appear that would enable me to find forums that were of interest. I should also be able to browse the entire hierarchy.

On behalf of the Community team, I'm soliciting your input on this page. Please share with us what should be different, what you like, don't like, is confusing, etc.

General impression is that the webpage is too confusing, too much
info. Especially, the infrequently used entries take too much space on
the page (e.g. navigation on the left). The navigation area on the
left should be a drop-down list of the top navigation bar ([Home] [dW
    home] [Products] etc.)

The "New forum posts" portlet is completely useless given the enormous
amount of traffic that is sent to the forums daily. More useful would
be to list the most active threads, or the highest rated threads.

The entry "featured community member" is so typically-American. In
Europe we more or less feel embarrassed when being elected as
"Employee of the Month" with a picture on the wall.

The [Products] navigation entry should allow a similar portal page as
the main portal, but then filled with entries particularly related to
the selected product. For example, "new forum posts" (or "Most popular
threads" is I prefer it to be) for a ClearCase product should show the
entries from the ClearCase forum only.

What I definitely miss (or dislike) on the page is putting together
related products. Now, all products seem stand-alone, while it took
Rational years to cluster them in Suites (Enterprise suite, Unified
Team suite, Developer suite, etc.) and to promote a way of thinking in
software development processes/cycles at large. Also IBM is
enphasizing on bringing a total solution to the software development
(and IT) world. So this developerWorks page should be in the same
spirit, which is the way a "developer Works".

You'll notice that at the bottom is a blank portlet. This won't be on the final version, but for now is a way to ask you "what did we leave out that is needed?".

For now I do not have a direct suggestion.

Some other specific questions we have are:
    * How frequently should the top highlighted feature change?

The page should be real-time, situational sensitive. Take the ads of
Google for instance. They are added depending on the selected page
content. The dW portal should be situational aware also, not only for
the "specials" at the righthand side, but entirely.

    * Would you want to personalize this page?

Definitely. Users must be able to select what kind of info they do
want, and what they don't want, for example their favorite forum, the
forums they have subscribed to.. Of course, there must always be room
for information that IBM considers important for a user with the
    particular preference.

Users must be able to cluster the information resources together the
way they feel it is most effective. And it should be possible to
open/close a portlet. Not only will this allow more entries on a page
but it will also effectively reduce information overload.

A nice feature I saw on TechRepublic is to add relevant links to your
personal preferences with keywords, and allow a search on keywords for
links that other users have defined.

Of course, a personalized page should be integrated with the "my
account" features where things like technotes, flashes, patches/fixes
    and other issues are personalized.

    * what do you expect to happen/what would you want to happen when you click on the "All forums" or "All blogs" links.

"All forums" should bring you to the list of all Rational forums,
which should be a page with a 1-liner per discussion forum. When
logged in, the "All forums" should be replaced by "My forums" and "All
    forums".
    Similar for "All blogs".

Maybe the 1-liners should also be open/close portlets, allowing more
(or less) information to be shown.

    Regards,
    Frank.

    Hi Scott, Frank,
Thanks so much for your valuable input. I have shared it with the community team and we are grateful for your perspectives.

I especially liked Frank's characterization of the featured community member as so typically American. No denying that our respective cultures influence us. I'm tempted to say a lot more, but think my political viewpoints would get me in trouble and they aren't appropriate here. So I'll leave it at that. Certainly your perspective is useful.

Scott, regarding your comment about the picture quality: I'm not having a problem myself, so can you please be specific about which particular image is troublesome. I want to bring it up with the graphics folks to insure that the eventual production page does not so suffer.
    Thanks again.
    Marc
