i'm using websphere application server 7.0/sql server 2008 and also encountering the same problem. My sql server is running on port 1434 and i already set the driver location for the sqlserver.jar.
driver name : DataDirect ConnectJDBC type 4 driver for MS SQL Server
    implementation Class Name = com.ddtek.jdbcx.sqlserver.SQLServerDataSource

When i click on test connection i get the following error:

The test connection operation failed for data source testDS on server server1 at node cheetahNode01 with the following exception: java.sql.SQLNonTransientException: DataDirectSQLServer JDBC DriverError establishing socket to host and port: cheetah:1434. Reason: Connection refused: connectDSRA0010E: SQL State = 08001, Error Code = 0. View JVM logs for further details.

what is being done wrong ?
