Pinned topic New InfoSphere BigInsights Quick Start Edition on PowerLinux ?

‏2013-06-20T07:25:02Z |

IBM made available :

InfoSphere BigInsights Quick Start Edition, the latest edition to the InfoSphere BigInsights family, is a free, downloadable, non-production version.

Would this run on PowerLinux ?

I'm afraid not, but just to check... what's your opinion ? If not, could we request a PowerLinux version ?

Thanks Bill for the testing... I'll give it a shot on my PowerLinux 7R2 when time permits.

If it actually works on PowerLinux, I think it would be a good opportunity to promote PowerLinux if the requirements page of the free version mentions PowerLinux. this would promote PowerLinux for Big Data products.

    So far it states :

InfoSphere BigInsights Quick Start Edition Native Software Installation

System Requirements for Native software installation

    • 64-Bit Linux Operating System
    • Minimum RAM: 8 GB
    • Minimum free disk space: 80 GB
    • Processor: x86 64-bit systems

Whereas the page you reached at installation step : "InfoSphere BigInsights Enterprise Edition 2.1 on Linux"

States that PowerLinux RHEL 6.2 update 4 and above are supported.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) Server 6 POWER System
    Base
    Update 1

These operating system levels are not currently supported

    Update 2 to Update 4
    and future fix packs
    2.1

It does install smoothly, just requiring expect rpm.

Now I have to learn how to use it !

That's too bad that the download page don't mention PowerLinux.

I downloaded the quick start package to see.

It's a 1.8GB tar ball download.    I unpacked that on a POWER7 system running Linux and fired up the start.sh script (I'm not a big fan of reading the instructions..   let's see what happens..)

The scripts fired up the included ppc64 Java engine, installed a local web server to manage the installation and configuration process, which I connected to from another system, and things looked to be good.     I did not proceed with the installation since this is someone else's system, but it did look promising.

The first screen did point to the "system requirements" page..

Here's a screen shot of the web install page.   The installation package was started on the Power7 server, browser from another system.

For BI ,take a look here

    https://w3-connections.ibm.com/wikis/home?lang=en_US#!/wiki/Info%20Mgmt%20Client%20Technical%20Professional%20Resources%20Wiki/page/BigInsights%202.1%20Teach%20the%20Teacher%20-%20June%2010-14,%202013

They are probably not saying Plinux, due to the support.
