Pinned topic Learn Something About ICN API's

‏2013-09-26T14:22:14Z |

Hi,

Our company need to develop custom step processor to show drop down list, combo box in our BPM workflows.We are going to use RAD. Our research shows us there is a definition named as "ICN Api". We want to learn something about this. Could you give us any information, link, red book target ? Can we use this api for our development? We need help about this.

    Hi,

    If you are trying to add an external choice list to a data field displayed in the step processor, you can create an External Data Service (EDS) to do this. This maybe an option for you instead of writing a new step processor.

    Also there is an ECM developerWorks article about writing a custom step processor (it's not actually in the redbook). I'm not exactly sure of the developerWorks name, but try "Guidance for Building IBM Enterprise Content Management Widgets Solutions in IBM Content Navigator".

    Hi,

    We tried to use EDS before but we couldn't success. "Customizing and Extending IBM Content Navigator" (redbook) was our guide. I am reading "Guidance for Building IBM Enterprise Content Management Widgets Solutions in IBM Content Navigator" right now but it is not clear. We need more information and samples.

    If you are using the redbook as a guide, that may be your problem. The redbook is for version 2.0.0, but the current version of navigator is 2.0.2. If you are running version 2.0.1 or 2.0.2 the redbook may not help you. More information here:

    So, what is the solution then? any new technical guidance for 2.0.1 or 2.0.2? How can we go further? Any help please?

    EDS has not changed its API from 2.0.0 (it was the JavaScript API that changed) so the redbook and sample in it should still be useful for EDS.  If you can append more info on what didn't work for you with EDS we might be able to help to get it to work.   Otherwise you have access to the published documentation and resources that I know of.   I do notice you didn't mention the most important book of all though, the developer guide, at http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/iconf/v5r2m0/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.ibm.developingeuc.doc%2Feucdi000.htm   It has a chapter on EDS and information on using it with workflow.

     At IOD there will also be training if you are able to take advantage of that.

    we tried to use that book  "Customizing and Extending IBM Content Navigator" as we mention about before.
    ın this chapter there is a sample project.
    We use it firstly but couldn't success exactly so decided to try if there is any other guides we can find.
    I am attaching our sample project here which we create with this redbook.
    we tried to perform that sample step by step.
    Get the sample project from this location ; <IBM Content Navigator install>/samples/sampleEDSService
    Then made changes with following this redbook
    we deploy it to WAS and identify it in navigator.
    System.out file is used for logs.
    a class(CLAIM) and property definition(ESTIMATOR) we create for use and we are using MS SQL 2008 for database.
    I can see our doGet and doPost functions are working correctly from system.out file when "add document" clicked first,
    but then I changed the class definition (we need "Claim" class to see choice list in combo box) code didn't respond.
    It's working only for first attempt. Thankes for your responses.

    From your description it sounds like the ObjectTypes.json may not have the CLAIM class specified.  I see that the code you wrote has good tracing, so if the ObjectTypes.json is correct for CLAIM you should see calls to the UpdateObjectTypeServlet.   Is CLAIM the symbolic name?  If so that should be listed in ObjectTypes.json.

    Thanks a lot for your response. yes you are right about the symbolic name my class name is Claim but it is symbolic name is CLAIM. I changed the ObjectTypes.json file with CLAIM and in logs response and request operations can be  seen now. But  here is no change in combo box. I want to show you logs;

    as you can see database items can be taken from tables but they can not set to combo box as combo box items

    I see that neither trace point 9 nor trace point 11 shows up in the trace.  That means that the following code:

      choiceList.put("displayName", listDispName);
      choiceList.put("choices", choices);
      propertyJson.put("choiceList", choiceList);

    may never have been executed.  That would leave the choice list that was built never being adding to the propertyJson.

    It might be easier to debug this if you printed out all of the response JSON prior to returning from the post method.  You could use

      System.out.println(jsonResponse.serialize(true));

    you are right about code block never been executed. I used System.out.println(jsonResponse.serialize(true)); it gave me this;

    {
       "properties": [
          {
             "symbolicName": "ESTIMATOR",
             "value": ""
          }
       ]
    }

    here is no value. values are taking from database but they are not putting in json object as a property. so we need to chage some code parts.

    Hi,

    I made some changes in our sample today and got a result. my database has 3 choice item " ESTIMATOR1, ESTIMATOR2, ESTIMATOR3," but only ESTIMATOR3 can bet set to combo box. I want to show you json object which we create after getting form database;

    do you have any opinion about why ESTIMATOR1 and ESTIMATOR2 can not be setted as a choice list item? is there a problem with json object?  I also attached the screen shot of combo box.

    Your JSON contains a few errors. The jsonArray "choices", should contain multiple values, so for example:

    "choiceList": {
    "choices": [
    {
    "displayName": "ESTIMATOR1",
    "valid": true,
    "value": "ESTIMATOR1"
    },
    {
    "displayName": "ESTIMATOR2",
    "valid": true,
    "value": "ESTIMATOR2"
    }
    ],
    "displayName": "ESTIMATOR",
    "valid": true
    },

    In your example there are multiple jsonObjects with the name choiceList....and apparently in such a case it only picks up the last one.

    thankes for all your responses finally we are able to solve problems. yes you are right about json data error. I realize that here is some code parts will never be executed in this circumstances and I was trying to run them and making mistakes. I think code has missing lines. as I opinion there should be 3 code lines too. when I add them problem has solved. I want to show where is it;

    //result taken from database then:

    while (results.next())
    {
    if (!propertyTemp.equals(property))
    {

    //here is not executing because we have only ESTIMATOR as a property which we got from db

    }

    if (!results.wasNull())
    {

    if (!listDispNameTemp.equals(listDispName))

    {

    //here is not executing too because they are always equel for our sample

    }

    }

    // these lines are executing but "choices" json object is not adding to "choiceList" json object. and then "choiceList" need to add

    // "propertyJson" too.

    JSONObject choice = new JSONObject();
    choice.put("displayName", results.getString("dispname"));
    choice.put("value", results.getString("value"));
    choices.add(choice);

    // After we add these lines we succeed.

    choiceList.put("displayName", listDispName);
    choiceList.put("choices", choices);
    propertyJson.put("choiceList", choiceList);

    }

    thankes everybody.

    Can you shae your code for EDS ?  I tried the change but its not working.

    After doing the above change i dont see choce list getting populated correctly. I always see 2 choice list item for Estimator eventhough i have 5 choice list items in database.

    Also dependent value for branch office is not getting populated correctly after selecting the region

    If you can look at my code and suggest the change , it would be helpful.

    Hi.. Can you pls share the correct working code as dependent value for branch office is not getting populated when selecting a region.. Any help is appreciated.? When I went through the logs, I could make out that inprogresschanges request is not triggered when changing the Region value.

    Thanks.

    Having seen so many posts in this forum about EDS issues ... do you still recommend using EDS ?

    Thanks.

    PAbe - please do not cross post the same question in 5 different posts. It's quite annoying to people that monitor this forum to see the same question in 5 different posts. Reviewing this thread, the general issue here is frankly a lack of simple programming skill.
