Pinned topic Data access strategy when multiple DB vendors are used

‏2013-06-19T15:30:16Z |

Hello,

We are considering using Cognos BI to create reports stored in our Oracle and SQL Server databases. Report designs have not been finalised but joins between databases are likely to be unavoidable. What would be the best strategy to store and access the data in order to achieve performance and ease of development? Is it better to collocate the needed tables or let Framework Manager handle the joins first and tackle performance problems later? Are there risk factors that we especially need to pay attention to in such an environment?

Thanks,

ichin

You will be much better off copying the data into one database. Creating joins across vendor tables will be a performance nightmare, and may adversly affect both database environments. Any other option will lead to regrets.

    Good luck,

When you do that, you'll also find that things work best if the schema for the collected data is a star/snowflake.
