Pinned topic Question regarding FQDN vs. short hostnames for ECM SM Client Agent - cala_rex

‏2014-05-30T19:30:43Z |

Hi,

Given a scenario with different DNS configuration (/etc/resolv.conf) accross the ECM SM server and clients, I´m not sure of the best way to maintain hostnames within ECM SM system.

The basic overview is that customer has two domains (both are valid) and, depending of server, a short hostname can be resolved (FQDN using nslookup) to "hostname.DOMAIN1" or "hostname.DOMAIN2". For example:

1 - nslookup executed from ECM SM Server

#nslookup smserver01 => smserver01.DOMAIN1

#nslookup smclient01 => smclient01.DOMAIN1

2 - nslookup executed from ECM SM Client

#nslookup smserver01 => smserver01.DOMAIN2

#nslookup smclient01 => smclient01.DOMAIN2

3 - CALA_REX configuration on host "smclient01"

#/opt/IBM/ECMSM_AGENT/cala_rex/cr_cli_cfg.sh

----------------------------------------
    Property: "listenport" = "127.0.0.1:23804"
    Property: "description" = "IBM ECM SM CALA_REX Agent"
    Property: "cenit-root" = "/opt/IBM/ECMSM_AGENT"
    Property: "tempdir" = "/opt/IBM/ECMSM_AGENT/temp"
    Property: "usessl" = "true"
    Property: "pingperiod" = "120"
    Property: "server" = "smserver01.domain1:23802"
----------------------------------------

#cat /opt/IBM/ECMSM_AGENT/cala_rex/cala_rex_cli.cfg

<cala-rex-cli-configuration>
  <!-- This is the configuration file of the cala-rex agent daemon.
      ....
   -->
  <property name="listenport" value="127.0.0.1:23804"/>
  <property name="description" value="IBM ECM SM CALA_REX Agent"/>
  <property name="cenit-root" value="/opt/IBM/ECMSM_AGENT"/>
  <property name="tempdir" value="/opt/IBM/ECMSM_AGENT/temp"/>
  <property name="usessl" value="true"/>
  <property name="pingperiod" value="120"/>
   <property name="server" value="smserver01.domain1:23802"/>
</cala-rex-cli-configuration>

4 - ECM SM RAP GUI - Connected Agents

From "Connect Agents" I see the same IP address twice, example:

172.16.241.93 / smclient01.domain1 (same of smserver01 nslookup result) / online

172.16.241.93 /smclient01.domain2 / offline

5 - ECM SM RAP GUI - Event Management

From "Event Management" I see only "smclient01.domain2":

SYSTEM / Hosts Tree: only the host smclient01.domain02

Event Details - "Full Qualified Host Name" Field: smclient01.domain2

Event Details - "Agent Host Name" Field: smclient01.domain2

6 - Finally, the questions

How is the best way to manage hostnames within ECM SM system, considering also a situation of change on FQDN domain ?

Can I configure whole system to work with all FQDNs using "domain1" or "domain2" ?

How does the system match a connected agent (IP, FQDN, etc.) with hosts under SYSTEM tree ?

Thanks.

    Hi Carlos,

    our Senior Vice President would like to talk to you about possibilities for ECM SM training. It looks like your doing ECM SM work more often and we like to keep the quality of ECM SM installations on a high level.

    Please contact Roland Merkt using his email r.merkt@cenit.de.

    Thanks for your understanding,

    Kind Regards
