Pinned topic WmWare and StorWize V7000 w/ Compression performance issue

‏2013-11-21T07:46:35Z |

Hello,

We have started to use compression (RACE) together with Storwize V7000 Unified and VmWare.

Deploying new servers on compressed volume from template in VmWare can now  take up to 1 hour to complete.

Same operation on a normal, uncompressed volume takes ~3 minutes.

Any tips on how to troubleshoot this?

    Hi,

That's interesting to hear. How are you presenting storage to VMware and if you're using NFS what kind of CPU usage were you seeing on your file nodes before enabling compression?

We are using FC block access through brocade SAN switches, so file nodes are not in use in this setting. Nothing special about CPU usage on StorWize controller.

    Dear Jonny,

how many FC paths you set from VMware to StorWize V7000?

    Alexander,

Each LUN have a total of 4 paths (round robin) and our VMWare Cluster sees 12 different LUN's so in total it should be 48 to Storwize only. Thare are also paths to DS4x00 storage.

    Hi Jonny,

4 FC paths is good for VMware and StorWize V7000.

Looks like your v7000 have a high workload (more then 20-25% his CPU usage). In this case don't use compressed volume.

I noticed that V7000 release 7.2.0 includes updates to the RACE compression component which are intended to improve performance with some VMware workloads.

When the V7000 Unified package is updated to include 7.2.0 then it would definitely be worth retesting to see if that makes any improvement.

Unless you also happen to have a standalone V7000 system that you could try this on beforehand?

Tobias, did you ever resolve this?
