This article has just came to my attention. CPU x VRD fault with C-States enabled - IBM System x and BladeCenter

http://www-947.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-5091926&brandind=5000008

It would seems IBM made a poor component choice for the VRD and trying to avoid a massive recall.

Quoted from the article,

"1. IBM Servers are designed to perform optimally in a steady state power environment. Excessive AC and DC power cycles can stress system components which may lead to pre-mature failure of the VRDs."

I have seen servers power on/off every day, controlled by VMware DPM. Does this means servers will fail sooner because of such excellent VMware power saving technology ?

Regards.
